Drivers Window Bolt Through Glass
Here were my symptoms: There was a "clunk" when rolling down the window. All was normal when rolling up the window. We stopped using the window for fear something worse would happen. During an accidental use, the window rolled all the way down and would not roll up. I followed the instructions found here http://www.xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-foru...-actuator.html to remove the door panel, I unbolted the airbag and bungeed it to the door lock, then peeled back the door lining and reconnected the window switches. I then tried to roll up the window while pulling up on the glass at the bottom edge. It rolled up all the way. I think it was askew inside the door and was stuck. Ok, there should be 3 pieces: the bolt, plastic collar, and the nut(it fits into the plastic collar and presses it out to fill up the hole in the window.
I can see the bottom edge of the plastic collar piece sticking out from below the window as it should. You should go on real oem and check it out. But window regulator failures are super common and might be the problem. I just did one on my x last week. |

Much thanks @bastereo. The nut and/or the plastic collar is the issue I believe. The glass fits loosely on the plastic collar and with any use slides off. I don't believe I have a nut in place or it is not tight enough to expand the plastic collar.
I had checked real oem but was not confident with my reading of the schematic (or maybe I was looking at the wrong one). I'll post the results. Again, much thanks. |

So I have taken another look. The window works fine as long as the glass stays on the plastic collar (real oem calls this a "bush"). However, after 10 up/downs the glass has slid almost off the collar and there is nothing keeping the glass on the collar.
My thought was to remove the hex bolt, the collar and the clip. However, the hex bolt won't budge and when I apply some torque to remove it the head starts to strip (I am using an 8 mm open end wrench ... am I using a wrong size?). This also implies that the nut is still in place and that maybe the collar is broken. I think I need to get the bolt out. Am I missing some technique or is it a matter of strength and patience, or something else (I am stuck with my current brain LOL)? The real oem page is RealOEM.com * BMW E53 X5 3.0i EL.FRONT DOOR WINDOW LIFTING MECHANISM. |

thank ECS for the wonderful pics.
Ok so take a look at this link Home Page > Search > 51338254781 > ES#94509 Window Regulator Clip - Priced Each - 51338254781 Look at the 3rd pic. The nut goes inside that sleeve / collar. You should replace that plastic clip thing. When you clip it into your window, you then insert the nut from the outward side in. When you tighten the screw, it pulls the nut inside the collar, expanding that collar, and holding your window in place. Let me know if you follow. |

@slickGT1 - I was about to button up the door when I saw your post. Thank you. This confirms that the Hex Nut (parts 3) in the Real OEM diagram is not used. The problem was the plastic clip ... the "arms" that flare out to hold the window in place were broken (the clip is cheap, cheap, cheap). With the new clip installed the window mechanism is outstanding. Works smoothly, no play or window flop.
Let me mention one item for anyone who does this next ... if you are a tad dim, like me, you might try to remove the hex bolt with an 8mm open end wrench. This would not work for me. However, there is an access hole shown in the above photo, about 1.5 inches below where the mechanism is in the photos, that is perfect for a 8mm socket and gives nice hand access to the outside of the window. I'll do a bit better write-up when the project is done. Thanks for your help. |

Tools needed: 8mm socket, 10mm socket, clip (51338254781)
Tools used (in addition): needle-nose pliers (fat fingers), and a "grabber" to clean out the bottom of the door, and I did replace the hex bolt (07147154229) and the bush (51338242760) 1)Remove Door Panel, Steps 1 and 2 from the link in the OP "Removing Door Lock Actuator" 2)Remove Airbag (3 - 10mm bolts) but do not disconnect. Instead hang from door lock knob with a bungee or cord. 3)Remove door "foam" from the door lock knob forward, down, and back to the jamb and let hang. 4)Reconnect window controls (this is needed for the drivers door and maybe for passenger doors because you will need to adjust the window height). 5)Adjust window so that the hex bolt holding the clip and bush are in the access opening 6)Remove hex bolt with 8mm socket 7)Remove window from clip and bush if still there, and slide broken clip towards the front of the door (there is a little retainer at the bottom of the clip that can be pushed in from the access opening) 8)a-fit new clip, b-mount glass on round portion of clip, c-push bush (ok it doesn't sound right) from exterior side of glass into the clip. Make sure the flange on the bush is towards the exterior. Moderate effort is needed to get the bush in far enough flair the clip edges, d-insert hex bolt and tighten, e-test results (note that the automatic up/down feature will not work until you start the car) 9)Close up I hope this is of some value. It is an easy job with good access to the parts. No blood or scraped knuckles were had in this procedure. I have attached a picture of the parts involved (note the clip is broken and seen from the side; SlickGT1 has a link of an entact clip) and another of the access hole. Glad it worked out. Yea it takes a bit of visualizing, or plain removal to see how it works.

I just did this repair a few weeks ago also. Apparently it's pretty common. Glad you got it worked out.

Yea that is common, and the fact that the 4 regulator bolts that hold it in place, also come loose and cause that rattling of glass. Had it on one of my windows. Go figure, orriginal, and the bolts came loose. I guess you can expect this after 6 years from a German-USA built car.
