Edit: For example, they changed the E30 rear console from a laminated soft vinyl adhered to a plastic base to a hard plastic stamped piece that neither matched in color, texture, or sheen to the originals. Or, hell, even to the new center console or new dash available at the same time.

BMW Classic is reproducing specific parts that have become high demand through worldwide ordering requests to my understanding of that system. I'm not sure who makes them vs who makes the non classic branded parts but they do state that they are a reproduction or the original part. |

And what I'm trying to convey is that BMW Classic used to be very different and much better. Somewhere a little over 10 years ago, BMW issued a press release declaring that they would reorient Classic around increased profit vs. preserving heritage, and everything went downhill. Edit: It used to be called BMW Mobile Tradition. It was the replacement of Mobile Tradition with Classic that marked both a decline in quality and a dramatic increase in prices.

I have 272,000 miles on my 2006 3.0. I've spent plenty on keeping it up, but some things I've done weren't absolutely necessary, but my OCD wouldn't allow me to leave it untouched. An example is the mesh in the bumper. It was broken in a few places, but it was strictly a cosmetic issue, it was never going to make the truck unreliable. I replaced them anyway because i couldn't stand looing at it. Other stuff like suspension, bushings, gaskets, etc have all been changed at some point. Recently replaced the oil pan gasket. PITA, but worth it. I do all work myself except alignments and tire replacements. My goal right now is to take it to at least 300,000 miles and see how she's doing when we get there. IMHO the E53 is one of the best SUV's (I know its an SAV) ever made. The current X5 is an abomination to me and don't get me started on the X7. What a god awful ugly, oversized beast that is. I upgraded my head unit to an Avin Avant, so I have something close to current vehicle capability that I want anyway. So, she'll be in my garage for a long time.

And the X7... We'll pick up one of those as soon as the depreciation makes it a $35k vehicle. Getting close to there already. We need one for the extra seating and larger interior. For a larger vehicle, it is pretty attractive compared to most competitors. But looks are subjective... so I certainly get your opinion/love of the E53. Our X5s are people movers, excepting my E53 which is one of the "fun" vehicles. So our needs in an SAV are probably different.
