Yeah, but you get to leave off two heavy pieces that you are currently carrying around. If you are going to have a hitch, and expect it to tow a trailer (any trailer), you are better off getting the proper equipment. Anything less is a compromise.

Hey now ... slow down.

Noone mentioned regretting anything. I actually bought the thing for someone else who I thought would need it. Turns out they didn't so I decided to keep it and possibly install it.

Then it got delivered and holy mowly - I thought it was just a small metal square tubing that inserts into the X. That's when I looked at the DIY to install it and confirmed that yes I got the right box. I thought it was some kind of mistake and they accidentally shipped me a metal bumper.

Well ... anyways ... I'll probably put it up for sale later if I don't change my mind. I don't regret buying it, even if I'm not planning to use it, because there are plenty of people that could. So there.

I completely agree with you JCL. You just happen to post before my expanation of where I was coming from. It was not really for me but if I DID need a hitch I would not hesitate to use it as is.

Its just that I figured eh ... I'll just put it on even though I don't need it. Then I saw what's involved and ... well ... now you know the rest.

Of course, I KNOW .. that's why I use these

I just used the opportunity to clarify my comments prior about expectations - or lack of.

BMW North America called me to tell me they were shipping the hitches to the dealers after I had one shipped to me from New Jersey. BMW of Bloomfield in New Jersey was claiming they had them the whole time and had found 5 of them when they moved warehouses, when in fact they were just the first dealer to get them from the factory. Then they were trying to auction them off on E-bay at a premium knowing full well that every dealer would have them. I paid for shipping when I could have gotten one a few days later from Rusnak BMW here in Westlake Village, Ca. I paid shipping for nothing. I have to say that it is truly a disappointment to find out they were lying to me the whole time and disappointed they would take advantage of the desperate situation the lack of hitches put us all in. I am going to complain to BMWNA about this. They should not allow this type of behavior by an dishonest authorized dealer. I want my shipping back!

I did the install myself and it was a pain in the ass but I saved $500 for 5 hours of work. My hitch saga ends! Thank God. Now I can tow the boat and hook up my mountain bike rack. Finally, I actually do own a SAV.

You were taken advantage of for trying to be a nice guy. If I were you I would demand a return and refund from the dealer. They told a nice story didn't they. I paid shipping to the west coast for nothing!

Hey I feel for you, but I don't see how on what basis should they give you a refund? We all know that when it comes to BMW parts it's like the wild west...they all charge whatever the hell they want to charge. Just the other day one guy got quoted $1000+ for running boards that another dealer will sell for $600. In the case of the hitch seems like basic supply and demand economics. Frankly when I saw them become available and heard the story about the warehouse (!) I was amazed they were not being sold for more, which led me to speculate that the story was BS and that the long wait was indeed over. I say screw the fight. You win some, you lose some. Just take your business elsewhere from now on.

There is a BMW hitch that just appeared on Denver Craiglist. Looks to be new in the box and the seller is asking 900 for it. Seems high to me but if any board member needs me to help check it out or whatever, let me know.
