Looks like a Dinan setup. Should be just mufflers... don't think they had a cat-back setup.

Over the weekend I took my 4.8is in for some minor work with my indy. They recommended doing the valve guide seals. The truck has just under ~90k miles and I know this is a common repair for the N62 motor, so I don't have any real dispute about the recommendation.

Question is - without opening the motor and without any white smoke on start/acceleration, how did they diagnose it was needed? No codes, no smoke, no performance issues - just going on age and miles? Is there a diagnostic technique for valve seals I'm missing?

There are visual signs on the back of the intake and exhaust valves of oil being burned. The plugs could show oil consumption, etc. Unless your X5 is using oil and /or smoking, I personally would put it off.

My 4.8is (170,000 km) uses about a litre of oil per 1,000 kms, which I'm told is par for the course with these engines.
It no longer smokes after prolonged idle since I switched oil grades, but I do plan to replace the two PCV valves soon (have two new genuine BMW parts ready).

Did your indy suggest it could be split diaphragms in the PCV valves?

I'm curious, what oil and grade are you using to stop the smoking at prolonged idle? Thanks in advance

Castrol Edge 5W-40.
Smoking only started after I changed the oil and put in Castrol Edge 5W-30, as recommended by BMW.
