Wow, surprise inside my tire!

Picked up a 4.8is in December and about a week ago I replaced the stock 20 Diamaris, decided to give the Continental DWS's a try.

The Diamaris -- all four -- looked great from the *outside* with no visible signs of uneven wear whatsoever and plenty of tread left.

However, one of the rears, when you looked at the tire from the *inside* the rubber was completely peeling off one of the inner corners to the point that you could see the inner mesh threads.

Again -- no visible wear from the outside, you could only see this tire falling apart by unmounting it from the wheel/rim and looking at it from the inside.

I will now be unmounting all my tires for internal visual inspection at least once a year. Ugh, another f'in' thing to worry about, lol...

Anyone else experience this?

Anyone explain to this newbie how the tire would be falling apart like that on the inside (I'm guessing from the camber?) yet show no signs of uneven wear on the outside?

check the DOT production week and year. Although, even if the tires are original, they shouldn't be rotting out within 4 years. Could be an issue with mounting in the past where a tear could have been started.

Did your tire have any issues with slow leaks? Typically, the first internal layer is there to reduce air permeation through the rest of the layers (innerliner), and if it's damaged, you may have a slow leak.

Good luck with the DWS - it definitely has some great reviews and a cool tread pattern!

I already put it in storage but I will go back sometime and check for production date and also take some pics to post.

Am hoping for some snow to test out the DSWs. Too early to report any findings but I am optimistic. Really didn't want to run two sets of wheels/tires so hopefully these will work out. Might throw some chains in the trunk for emergency but I'm mostly between NY and CT so it's not like Colorado or Canada, etc. We'll see...

Had a rear OEM Diamaris stem popped out completely (the rubber surrounding the stem just break down), had a complete flat instantly. Good thing I was driving in traffic jam and someone pointed out the flat. That's why I switched to Pirelli, not sure but Michelin is just over price and under perform to me, maybe I am bias now.

I think you might be a little biassed, I have used both Pirelli and Michelin (currently using), I find Michelin good maybe the diffrence in climate and geography might play a role, yes these tyres are expensive same time lasts eternal unless you have decided to take your X5 into the grand prix!

Or am I also biased....

I have Michelin on both my E class and X5 now. They work amazingly on the E class (70 mph on snow covered highway with confidence). Same amount of snow on the roads, using the X5 I had near zero stopping power they are both mxv4 plus also. Can't explain why
On the other hand, I put Bridgestone H/L Alenza on an all wheel drive Endeavor and they were AMAZING!!!! These tire transformed that car from an SUV to an SAV, really.

That statement makes no sense at all. The valve stem has nothing to do with the brand of tire. It's supplied by the installer.

I had the same problem. It only occurred on the rear right tire on my 2004 3.0i. Do you park your X5 on a flat surface all the time or is it up on a hill or angled up a driveway?

I have not yet addressed the issue, but its a failure of the upper carrier bushing and lower arm bushings that caused my wheel to sit with incorrect camber and toe settings.
