Well my P0172 and P0175 (system too rich) codes came back today with a shiny CEL on the dash. Changed MAF and pre catalyst lambda sensors the last time and has been clear for 8 months. Oh well, time to have another look.

That's what I am fighting too. I replaced the air intake elbow yesterday but the old one didn't look bad. The code didn't come back today, but I'm gonna wait a week or so before I believe I fixed anything.

I also ordered my cooling system parts. Genuine BMW stuff is awful expensive on this car. I even cheaped out with a few OEM parts. I didn't even get the fan or clutch, or any of the smaller coolant hoses. Radiator, WP, T-stat, the big hoses, expansion tank, and it was still over $700.

Pretty simple when bearing dies and it chews itself up.

When it rains it pours (except here)

And to think a simple shear key could have saved the thing from self destruct

Sticking / dirty fuel injector can give you rich codes. Usually intake problems give you lean codes (more air than measured gets into cylinders). I'm not sure how you get less air than measured from the intake side but I would look into throttle position sensor and disa if you have the six

Agreed. The negative fuel trims exceeding 10% triggers the code CEL so I struggle with the theory that an intake leak is causing the issue. Too much air from an intake leak would cause the trims to go positive not negative.

I pamper this engine when I drive rarely exceeding 30% throttle and it never misses a beat, fires up smooth and runs smooth as silk so injectors are not on my radar yet.

As mentioned, I replaced the MAF with a Siemens unit and Bosch direct fit pre cat lambda sensors last August so I thought I had it covered. Maybe the fuel filter/regulator next?

Maybe I should try that. Probably not as an impressive of a pull as the 4.8 but it may shake some things up...
