I am also amazed at how expensive Tahoe's are on the used market. Certainly not a good value in my book.

I do love my 4.4 and the sound of the V8 is great, but I do think the X5 is a weak car the gearboxes go far to often. Mine had it and the torque converter changed at 80k (at least I didnt pay for it), air suspension isn't great as they throw up faults every now and then. Door handles don't like the cold and stop you trying to get into the car, not even good off road.
Next time I'm gonna by a range rover.

We ended up buying a new Mazda CX9 which fit our needs better than the 4.6is now that my wife is the primary driver on it.

Have loved almost every minute of ownership of the X up to this point. The only thing that I do not enjoy is the possibility/probability of the CCV freezing up. (Those of you in warmer climates don't know what I am talking about but the threads will start here again in a few short months)

Other than that don't mind working on and replacing parts that need to be and it is a blast to drive, but will be replacing it as I can't stand owning a vehicle that I can only drive for 7 months out of the year due to the CCV problem.

Well I've had mine for 3 weeks and the Starter has gone bad, Front Drivers side window wont go up. Its trying to but seems like its catching on something. I love how the car drives and handles but hopefully this is not a sign of things to come.

Third Party Warranty

My only experience was not a good one. I followed a link from this site and ended up buying a policy from Automotive Service Protection for my '04 4.4i with 65k miles. I ended up buying a 5 year/100,000 mile policy for $1960. When I got the policy a week later, I found that it paid a max of $6000 broken down by category - $3300 for the engine, $2200 for the transmission, $500 for electrical, and so on. I also read that they go to great lengths to deny claims based on their fine print.

I cancelled right away, and I will say they refunded my deposit within a few days, with no funny business. The coverage is laughable, given what the X5 actually costs to repair.

I haven't found a more reputable carrier, yet.

bmwman528e, The rear mount on the regulator let go, so the back edge of the glass is stuck in the tracks. You'll pretty much have to remove the door panel and lift on the rear edge of the glass to get it to go up, then don't roll it all the way down till it is fixed! You may be able to do a quick repair using mrbmwx5's method he put up a thread on.

As an airline pilot I travel to Dubai, Riyadh (I'm here now) and Jeddah quite often, the Saudis and Emiratees absolutely love their Tahoes/Yukons and Suburbans/Escalades! You very seldom see a BMW X5 or X6 over here, probably couldn't take the heat...lol!!

This site was the primary reason for me staying AWAY from X5 for at least a year or two, until I finally gave up and went and bought my current 05 3.0i three years ago. Every time I would decide to go buy one, I would come to this board and do some research, and say to myself 'noway am I buying a car that has that kind of *serious* problems... forget it', and walk away from the idea.

After buying my current X5, a few initial (small) issues got taken care of under the original warranty, it has been bullet proof and driving and working flawlessly. I would gladly buy another. Mind you, I specifically talked with a bunch of local repairshops (bmw specific) and all of them recommended the 3.0 over 4.4 from reliability and lower cost of repairs/maintenance. That is why i went with the 3.0 and I am happy with it... well, I could always use a little more power so I would consider a 4.4 if I were in the market again.
