I just bought a 2001 X5 3.0l from a friend, the original owner with 65000mi on it. The only non-routine repairs are an axle and this is Pittsburgh where they invented potholes. I'm a scared and excited newbie

I'm going to do some upgrade on the audio (cassettes) and probably remove the VCR -- I don't even own a tape anymore.

http://bmwfans.info/parts-catalog/E5...wse/rear_axle/

It was most of the items shown in the Rear Axle Support/Wheel Suspension Kit and consisted of the two upper links, the lower swing arm bushings, Ball Joints, and Integral Links. The swing arm bushings in the front position showed the most wear, and on the passenger side it prevented the camber from being adjusted properly anymore. Both sides were down for even wear in the future. Total aftermarket part cost was about $500.

2000 4.4i 240,700 kms the list of recent stuff

Front and rear suspension replaced including the swing arm bushings, less the 4 ball joints, thrust arm ones in the front and lower ones in the rear wheel carrier, these are squeaky after the alignment and get replaced in a couple of hundreds kms and subframe bushings which were yet good.

Steering column.

4 New Michelin Energy 18" on stock ugly style 58,but I don't care much. The ride is so comfy now, although these aren't as wide as Falken Ziex used to be and I feel more roll while cornering.maybe they are too soft yet.

Timing chain guides and VANOS rebuild

All new rubber and steel gaskets etc on every mating surface that was removed in the process. No more seeping oil,no more embarrassing black "crying" Vanos Solenoids.Engine bay is bone dry on the top, some residue from the past leaks is still on the lower part, but it's gonna slowly diminish.

New vacuum hoses, new water pump, new cooling hoses, new secondary thermostat, new Oil Separator and a CVV.

Now it's due for a VANOS solenoid check up and maybe replacement since it gives me a P0011 code. on the bank 1.

What I noticed after the guides and VANOS updates...now it pulls like a beast, before I used to have a hesitation if I floored the gas pedal and it would not go faster unless I was gonna release it and press gradually, but now it just jumps forward immediately.

So now,I would need to take it somewhere to get some surface rust taken care of.
it stayed in the garage for two winters.Every single tiny paint chip became a rusty spot...it never happened while it was daily driven.
There not a better confirmation : car is built to be driven.

After a dull zoom zoom for 18 month a grin is back on my face!
