I did a quick search and figured this would be the best place to put this. I'm wondering, for those who have 150K+ miles on their E53, what sort of problems have you run into (if any)? There are two different X5s locally that I'm interested in, one is 148K and the other is 178K, but I want a good idea of what I'm getting into before buying. I mean, to me, 178K is a LOT of miles, and it's not a vehicle I'll be keeping forever (I'm one that likes to switch / upgrade every couple years). I would probably be putting 10-15K on it per year. However, the 178K car is a one owner and it's been very well taken care of.

Mileage has some bearing as it does on any vehicle, but the service history is where the gold is. Im about to sell my 2001 that has 185k on the clock, but I bought it from a friend who always maintained it and since Ive owned it I've carried that on. For instance, timing chain guides tend to fail on these and I've replaced them. etc. Just look for one that has had the big ticket items done. The engines are great aside from the chain guides and the cooling systems are weak. I have friends that have 300k on the 4.4 with no issues yet, just regular maintenance. So don't be consumed with the odometer. I guess I'll find out how the market responds to mine soon.

At the mileage of either of the Xs you are considering it is extremely important that the major 100,000 + wear item and maintenance of the suspension and engine have been done, especially if you are not a DIY person. Also, there are many threads on the forum regarding transmission issues at near 100,000 miles that you should consider prior to your purchase. It is critical that you get a pre-purchase inspection of any used vehicle by a certified mechanic.

Of the two you are considering, I would go with the one that you can find out the most about the history. I like one owner vehicles, especially when I can go the owner's home and see how they take care of their yard and home. I would also factor in owner's age---younger = spirited driving.

As it relates to an X, if possible, I suggest looking for a X with 60-70,000 miles. At that range you should have 30-40,000 miles of lower cost maintenance. Better yet is an X with 10,000 mile on mfg. warranty and is certified or you can purchase and extended warranty. Even from aftermarket sources, purchasing BMW parts will make you say "that has to be a mistake" and swallow really hard.
