It is critical that you get a pre-purchase inspection of any used vehicle by a certified mechanic.

Of the two you are considering, I would go with the one that you can find out the most about the history. I like one owner vehicles, especially when I can go the owner's home and see how they take care of their yard and home. I would also factor in owner's age---younger = spirited driving.

As it relates to an X, if possible, I suggest looking for a X with 60-70,000 miles. At that range you should have 30-40,000 miles of lower cost maintenance. Better yet is an X with 10,000 mile on mfg. warranty and is certified or you can purchase and extended warranty. Even from aftermarket sources, purchasing BMW parts will make you say "that has to be a mistake" and swallow really hard.
They're both 5-speeds, so no tranny issues I'm specifically looking for a manual trans as a matter of fact, so that limits my search drastically. And both are at dealers, unfortunately.

I drove the 178K car, and it felt worlds different than the 148K car. Much more body roll (probably still on factory struts), shifter was sloppy, etc. So I think I'm going to pass on that one. There's only a $1000 price difference between the two.

If you can, I suggest driving one with 60-75,000, to make the comparison that you have with these two.

How much history is available on the 148k X?

Unfortunately I think any X with that kind of mileage would be out of my budget (~$10K), but, I've been trying to find a low mileage one to test drive just for comparison's sake. The history on the 148K one is going to be limited to whatever I can get from the local BMW dealers---it's a two owner car that has been in this area its entire life and was serviced by at least one of the BMW dealers here. I know how important maintenance is on BMWs, but I think as long as it checks out with a PPI I'm comfortable with it not having all the maintenance records.

Good plan!

Just retired a 2001 X5 production date 10/00 with 398,000 km's on it. It didn't owe me a thing and if I wanted to change the head on it I would have gotten years more out of it, I think

But I upgraded and now have a 09 and love it. Post pics in the summer when its nicer here.

65K- PO did the air/cabin/fuel/oil filter changes just before purchase and I just had all the fluids flushed.
