Agreed his RT isn't that good. Practice takes patience

You have to launch when the 3rd yellow lights, or slightly sooner. Wait for the green and your RT will be NG. Short stage too, NO CREEP after the "stage" light comes on.

When you launch, or where you stage makes no difference to elapsed time (ET) over a given distance. When your front tire breaks the beam the timing begins. Reaction time (RT) is the amount of time after the light is green that it takes for the front of the front tire to cross the starting line.

In a race, short staging, stopping as soon as the first staging light comes or hitting the gas when the 3rd yellow is lit can be helpful to some, especially if ones reaction time is inconsistent, but it all depends on RT. It will vary for everyone. Even the best RT will not change the ET though if two vehicles have identical ETs, the best reaction time will win the race. Or, if the ETs are close enough the slower ET can still win if RT is enough faster.

If the only goal is the best ET your vehicle is capable of generating, I recommend starting anytime after the green when you feel ready as trying for a great RT requires considerable focus that could be dedicated to making sure you launch exactly as you planned.

I've cut dozens of perfect trees with the Vipers and ZR-1, even beaten faster cars.

The RT timer STARTS when the 3rd amber light comes on, with a heavy vehicle (X5) or MT trans vehicle, this is the time to GO!!!!

As stated prior, DON'T ROLL OUT UNTIL THE PRE-STAGE LIGHT GOES OUT (deep stage of vehicle). Shallow staging allows for a "running start/weight transfer" prior to breaking the beam that starts the timer!!! This allows for the LOWEST possible ET the vehicle can run.

More details........

The reaction time can start on the 3rd amber light if a perfect light is .500. If a perfect light is .000 the reaction time starts with the green light. . There is also a pro tree where a perfect RT would be .400. You need to know what a perfect light is at that track.

There was a time when I was drag racing every week, all season, every season. It was a crap shoot until I could run a consistent time without factoring in RT.

I haven't had my X5 at a dragstrip so I would start with a test and tune night.

The best way for me to stage would be shallow--stop immediately after the staged light comes on--more margin for error and it is easiest to know I have staged exactly the same each time.

Initially I would be more concerned about 30-60ft. times than Total ET. I would use the green light as the time to go as it is the easiest for me to concentrate on and not worry about any laughter in the stands. Once my 30-60 times are close I try get similar consistency at 1/8 and for the quarter. Only then would I start working on reaction time.

There is no way to know what light I will use to get the best reaction time. When I leave is exclusive to my reaction time, the contributing factors of my particular X5 as well as the track and what they use as a perfect light, the temp, the humidity and on and on.
If I was just there to try to get the best ET, I wouldn't worry about RT, too much distraction.

My guess is that 5 or more runs in the same lane would reveal a narrow range of ET potential for the majority of X5 automatics using the automatic shifting sport mode.

The RT does not change the ET. RT is an entirely separate measurement of the time it takes the vehicle to break the starting line beam from when the beam could have been broken without red lighting.
