Top view for those with Qs about pano roof and side view for steering. Notice the dual stalks on side. Once more stalk to deal with.

Yea, I noticed that. I think the bottom one is for the cruise control, but what is the one in the center for? I think it's for the power steering column adjustment because that's what it looks like on the 5er, but why does it also have the manual adjuster lever? Bad photoshop? Something the brochure guys overlooked, or does the new X5 have a manual column adjustment override to avoid 1st year electronic bugs? haha...

Finally, a BMW that I think looks pretty nice! The first time in what, 5 years since Bangle brought out the 7! Kudos to BMW for keeping the styling evolutionary. This is, in my opinion, what the doctor ordered. If it wasn't so expensive I'd be all over it (Once they fix the bugs of course!)

New 2007 X5, more opinions

As someone who loved the X5 from the get go and liked the re-style in '04 (?) so much that I finally bought one, the new X5 is very very nice, but for a number of reasons I'm still not completely sold. Here are my reasons (just my .02 for what it's worth)... in no particular order

1. The gear shift joystick is a joke and I can't wait until that sucker breaks or, even better, fails to "pop" back to it's neutral position.

2. Nice rearview camera (I'd love to get that one for the current X5), but what about the front camera with the wide angle view? I wonder where the rear camera is mounted (if it's the tiny black circle in one of the shots above the rear license plate #2, then I'm hugely disappointed...couldn't they have created a more steath install than that!!!???)

3. The videos are quite telling about this car, in particular, the last row of seats seem to be for midgets (and small ones at that) only. Is it just the angle of view or do the seats really seem to be tiny compared to the guy who is unfolding them. And just exactly how far back do these passengers sit? It seems that their heads are located even BEHIND the last side window. If so, wow that's really far back.

4. Leg room. The current X5 isn't the rear legroom king, but good enough IMHO. The new one seems to have less rear leg room to accomodate the 3rd row of seats. I might be totally off on this and will have to determine it in person, but it appears that if you plan on having 7 people in the car the back 5 better be kids/young adults. Furthermore, they clearly modified the 2nd row of seats so that it could fold forward to allow entry to the 3rd row, but in doing so it looks like the middle seat on the 2nd row is now a bit small for a full size adult.

5. The front and rear bumpers in all black are a great idea (parking in New York or other major cities destroys painted bumpers and the car overall ends up looking like crap), but for some reason the back bumper looks almost "glued-on" or "snapped in place." (While I generally like the X3 and it's driving dynamics, the appearance always reminded me of a car built by legos. The new X5 bumper reminds me of that look).

6. The BMWUSA web site has an X5 with front yellow side marker reflectors (they don't seem to be lights) oriented VERTICALLY. If the official press release is indeed a euro-spec car and the US version is going to get those reflectors I have one question...how do I get a Euro spec car? The rear bumper has horizontally mounted reflectors on the Euro spec car, which I also don't like so much, though more than a front set).

7. I don't like how the front end does not line up (center of hood and the two sides of the hood where the lights are located). Someone pointed it out in detail in an earlier post and I think it just looks wrong.

8. Personally I prefer round tail pipes to oval ones. Sorry guys, I know probably 99% of you will disagree with this one.

9. Are those Bridgestone Dueller tires? Interesting choice.

10. Interior color options are just plain B-O-R-I-N-G. Euro cars always had better color options and frankly I'm sick of the plain-jane all tan, all black or all grey versions. The most awesome color option in the entire X5 range was either the Truffle Brown / Black version, or the sporty color options only offered with the 'is cars. Now Truffle is gone and I guess it's replaced with Cinammon? Not bad, not my favorite either, but to me it would be the only real choice.

11. The wide shot of the the interior dash, seats and center armrest could practically be mistaken for a 7 series. Too bad.

12. Passenger seat should have 2 memory settings. This should be standard in all BMW's frankly. Anybody at BMW have a spouse?

13. While it has tons of great new featured technology, what happened to Active Cruise control and night vision?

14. It looks like the interior door pulls are covered in leather. In a tan or grey car these will look filthy in no time flat. For that matter isn't it kind of strange that the driver's side door doesn't have the same pull as the passenger side door?

15. I didn't see any mention of adjustable ride height, is that gone?

16. Engine is beautiful and it was already powerful enough 2 generations ago. I'm disappointed that instead of engineering efficiency in the form of even better gas mileage they engineer efficiency in the form of more power. Yes I know the car gets better gas mileage than the last generation, but come on BMW can certainly develop a powerful engine that could get 35+ mpg. After all, these are the same guys that can make the car stop on solid ice in a straight line! BMW sold a half million X5's in the US and I bet a huge number of those sit in traffic most of the day like I do. Given the speed limit is 65 and jail is around 100, why do we need a car that can (unrestricted) top out at probably 165+, especially in a day and age where US gas prices are about to hit European levels.

17. Why the shark-fin antenna all of a sudden?

18. I noticed the newly designed rear window wiper, hopefully it works better than the last one.

19. Cupholders are definitely too close to the dash. I always preferred them to be BEHIND the shifter and not between the dash and the shifter. I can't wait till my passenger reaches for coffee and changes gear for me or puts me into "Park."

Off my soapbox now.

pretty good list of your Nits&Picks, imo.

I don't necessarily agree with you on all of them,
but pretty well done. I espc. liked your Pt. #16.

Looking forward to seeing and sitting in the car...
alas, it's prob. outta my budget anyway.

3rd row seat is for people 5'6" or shorter. Yes, mainly for kids. BTW, the 3rd row seat is an option and if you don't want it, then you don't have to get it.

At least the cupholders are not the dumb ones that pop out of the dash like the current 5-series & 3-series.....

There is a "tobacco" color interior that looks great which replaces truffle brown, so you don't have to get tan/grey/black.
