My guess is that the biggest market for a rear view camera in E70 X5s is people who do NOT have Navigation. Simply because (at least in 2009 and 2010) the only way you could/can get the OEM rear view camera was as part of the Technology package which included Nav.. Yes I know you could/can order NAV without the camera but my guess is that not many people, and almost certainly no dealers, ordered Nav standalone.

So I'd be very interested in an after market rear view camera but ONLY if it was plug and play with the existing wiring harness AND worked with the smaller non-NAV iDrive LCD screen on a 2009 35d.

I am in the same boat. I am eagerly awaiting the DIY instructions!

found this link from someone's post when I searched the letters "QDIS."
There is a youtube link as part of the post -- looks like the X6 who retrofitted the system did NOT have NAV, the screen looks smaller than the the ones I have in mine. So hopefully this will help answer those where did not have NAV.

Besides reverse camera, looks like the "media box" (you'd have to mount it somewhere) can allow 3 other RCA input (DVD player for the front screen, or night vision camer in the front as it was OP described)

I look forward to add this feature to mine if the instruction is not to complicated -- looks like that also mentioned there is a "pre-existing" hole for the camera instaed of being part of the hatch handle.

Great find! The X5 also has a pre-existing hole for the camera, adjacent to the hatch handle.

Holy cow, it's like someone read my mind yesterday afternoon. That's my exact situation. I have a couple of years before I'm backing up to a trailer hitch again, but I really didn't realize how helpful such a kit would be until I starting using European underground parking garages.

This link might be of interest to you guys. $299 for the video module which works with or without the nav option.

BMW E90 1 Series - E90 3 Series - E60 5 Series - E63/E64 6 Series - E70 2007+ X5 - iDrive TV Nav Video Input Interface For iDrive. Connect a DVD Player, TV Tuner, Reverse Backup Video Camera, iPod Video, Aftermarket Navigation, Car PC Or Other AV Sou

They have a couple of different cameras although I found one on ebay which looks just like the oem camera on the X5 for only $79. They also have a similar camera as the original poster for $69.00!

170º Car Rear View CMD Camera Special for BMW X5 - eBay (item 280419879364 end time Dec-05-09 18:35:06 PST)

I emailed the seller and he claims this camera is a higher resolution than the oem. For $69 I guess it doesn't hurt to try it out...

I did it myself. I installed the multimedia interface and the rear camera as King shown the link below. It just looks like OEM where is the black plastic hosuing loccated on our E70 rear door. I will post some picutre of the rear camera, playing DVD and quality in complete dark.

BTW, it will work also with non-Nav system like 6.5" screen. I have a 08 E70 with Nav but no rear came and PDC. Regarding how soon the backup came show up. I say very quick as soon as I move to "R". All plug and play and require no programming from dealer (that's the part i like most!)

The aftermarket backup cam solution is actually better than the oem i-drive setup! I have the oem camera, and the camera usually kicks in by the time I am DONE backing up and ready to go forward! The delay is unbelieveable! The aftermarket audio/video adapters have nothing to do with the i-drive...as soon as the reverse signal is detected, the camera will kick in! I am almost thinking of re-wiring mine with the GNET or similar adapter. Then again I'm also thinking about getting the new ///X5M

Amazing! This really helps. But the website says that the video interface comes with a 'Mode' button that allows switching between video sources. Does that mean one needs to drill a hole somewhere and install this button? I know that NAV-TV and QDIS allow switching between video sources by keeping the button on the steering wheel pressed for 3 seconds.
