OK, so here's a few points I'd be grateful for some clarification on :-

The MkIII unit that I removed from my 2002 E53 was running V22 (3-1/63) when I replaced it with a Mk IV unit. My Mk IV is running V31.

The mention of "Navigation system operating software V32 is used on MK I, MK II, MK III navigation systems with split screen" is confusing me a little as I thought V22 was the final development for Mk III units.

I've never had any problems downloading/burning/installing the different mods, so is it worth temporarily refitting my Mk III unit just to do the mod?

I am aware that I'll have to burn 2 different versions of V32 to use in my Mk III (CD) and Mk IV (DVD) units if I proceed.

Secondly, having modded the pointer icon and splash screen on my Mk IV, will I have to repeat this exercise before I burn V32? or will it remember those changes from V31?

The BMW Nav OS disc contains the current version software for Mk1, Mk2, Mkl3, Mk4, NAVI01, NAVI02 and NAVI03 nav systems.

When a new release of the OS disc is released, it will contain a newer version of at least 1 (or more) nav OS software.
Normally, only the software that is under current production is updated.
All other versions have generally stopped development and remain unchanged.

Thus, on the last release (V32), NAVI03 was updated, and all other software was not changed.

Likewise, Mk3 software has remained unchanged at 3-1/63 since V22 which was released around August 2003.

> The MkIII unit that I removed from my 2002 E53 was running V22 (3-1/63) ...

You cannot state this. If you want to say this, you have to say "my nav was running V22, V23, V24, V25, V26, V27, V28, V29, V30, V31 & V32" - because all of these OS discs contain the same 3-1/63 software for your Mk3 nav.

> I am aware that I'll have to burn 2 different versions of V32 to use in my Mk III (CD) and Mk IV (DVD) units if I proceed.

No. Just make an Mode2/Form1 disc and it will update both units to the current software version held on the OS disc - provided of course that the version is different (higher or lower) to what is currently loaded in the nav.
V31 contains 3-1/63 and 4-1/100 (amongst others).
V32 also contains 3-1/63 and 4-1/100.
If you already have 3-1/63 on the Mk3 and 4-1/100 on the Mk4, then trying to load V32 will result in no change, as the software has not changed.

> Secondly, having modded the pointer icon and splash screen on my Mk IV, will I have to repeat this exercise before I burn V32? or will it remember those changes from V31?

If you modified an OS disc, the changes are on that OS disc only. If you then subsequently load a new version of OS onto the nav, then the existing OS (including grpahics, pointers, splash screens) will be overwritten by the new OS.

Remember, both V31 and V32 contain 4-1/100: ie - no changes for the Mk4.

Jochen - thanks for answering those questions for me.

With regard to my old Mk III unit running 3-1/63, I should have added that V22 is what I installed immediately before taking it out and fitting a Mk IV, and it's been sat here in my office waiting to go on eBay ever since.

From what you say about this update affecting only NAVI03 I'm not going to bother updating either of my units, they're at 3-1/63 and 4-1/00 so there's no point.

I'll remember the Mode2/Form1 issue for next time.

Thanks again.

You have a Mk4 nav (4-1/xx) computer with very old software (4-1/20).

Current version is 4-1/100

Updating your nav is highly recommended and easy to do.

Download the V31 or V32 image (both contain 4-1/100 Mk4 software)

Burn with a CD image buring program - I recommend ImgBurn (www.imgburn.com).

Eject map CD
Turn ign on (but leave engine off)
Insert OS CD
Follow onscreen instructions - do NOT turn off ign during update process!
Remove CD when it is ejected and click OK to reboot
Voila!

I installed the V31 in my 04 e46 and noticed a little difference in the look, but i'm not finding this perspective view people are talking about. Also, I'm in need of the updated navi disc to accompany my v31 update.

Hello all,

read all post about v31 and now about v32, and still have 2 questions:

1. in forum found this advice "Burn a new V31 and measure the errors and do a surface scan before you use it.". Could you please advice what software to use to do that?

2. in forum found "5. DO NOT SWITCH OFF THE IGNITION DURING UPDATE PROGRESS, otherwise you'll kill your navi". My question - if it happans that upgrade was not succesfull and I get black screan, what to do next? Is my navigation hardware then useful, need buy new one? or I just have to try update it again?

thank you
