When compared to other modernized industrialized nations, our murder rate is 5-10 times higher than most other countries. How would you explain that? Pure chance?
Hold on to your horses there Eric...This post is not Politically Correct.

Here are the Interpol 1995 crime statistics (rate per 100,000):
  • 5278 - US
  • 8179 - Germany
  • 6316 - France
  • 7206 - England & Wales
Here are Interpol 2001 crime statistics (rate per 100,000):
  • 4161 - US
  • 7736 - Germany
  • 6941 - France
  • 9927 - England and Wales
Notice that crime in the US is going down while crime rates in most of Europe is going up.

Now this next part will make your PC head spin.

Homicide Offender Rate/100,000 by Race in US (2000):
  • 3.4 - White
  • 25.8 - Black
  • 3.2 - Other
You might have noticed a certain number standing out in that statistic. You might also try to explain that the black numbers are over represented due to racism, police or the justice system.

If that were indeed true you would expect the distribution of race to be more in line if not higher for whites who make up more of the population.

Homicide Victim Rate/100,000 by Race in US (2000):
  • 3.3 - White
  • 20.5 - Black
  • 2.7 - Other
From this we can conclude that our murder rate is artificially high due to inner city black on black crime. When you remove the black on black crime numbers you get a more representative murder statistic for America.

Remove homicides committed by blacks in 2000
Total number in the year 2000: 21862
Total number of murders committed by Blacks:9316

What we are now left with is a US homicide offender rate of only 2.6/100,000 which is lower than Germany (3.27) and France (3.91).

So your hypothesis that America's gun toting Conservatives are responsible for creating a culture of death due to guns and easy access to guns you would be wrong.

Michael

Inner city crime is part of the US. You cannot seperate it out. I'm sure most of the murders in those other countries also take place in the inner city ghettos. I don't see you trying to seperate that out for those countries. If you are right in your analysis, then the rural murder rate in the US is indeed less than or about equal to the overall murder rate in some other countries. I don't know what such an analysis would prove though.

Here are the murder rates of a number of countries. These numbers are from 1998-2000:

Japan:
0.004999 per 1,000 people

Switzerland:
0.009213 per 1,000 people

Norway:
0.010668 per 1,000 people

Denmark:
0.010677 per 1,000 people

Netherlands:
0.011153 per 1,000 people

Germany:
0.011646 per 1,000 people

Spain:
0.012245 per 1,000 people

Italy:
0.012839 per 1,000 people

United Kingdom:
0.014063 per 1,000 people

Canada:
0.014906 per 1,000 people

Australia:
0.015032 per 1,000 people

France:
0.017327 per 1,000 people

South Korea:
0.019633 per 1,000 people

United States:
0.042802 per 1,000 people

As you can see from these numbers, the US murder rate is more than double of any of those other countries listed, and about 10 times as high as Japan. What do you think is the reason for this?

And BTW, this was not my hypothesis at all, nor do I agree with it. I think someone else said this, but not me. I think the problem runs much deeper, and has very little to do with the fact that guns are easy to access. That may contribute to the problem, but it is not the cause.

Somebody PLEASE explain to me how stronger gun laws (as is being toted by the Media right now...and I will assume in the next few days Congressman will come out and say the same) would have prevented the tragedy? The guy legally purchased a firearm in March.....he didn't side step a law or avoid it. At the time in March he was 100% legit to buy a weapon, as legit as any other citizen in the USA. He didn't steal the weapon or buy it from a drug dealer. Complete opportunist bullsh_t. A crazy @ss who wants to kill you..will find a way.

By the way, I'll go on record right now...NO we should not lift gun bans...that is the dumbest thing I've ever heard. Let's have gun fights bust out in Universities that would be wonderful.

Of course Rosie O'Donnell couldn't wait to comment on this...." the NRA is to powerful" ....her words after VT.

And all the "they should have locked down the school" crap, how would that have helped? He was a student there, he had a pass/badge and could access any area just like other students. This wasn't some random guy who came in off the street. The school and police did exactly what they should have. There was nothing else that could have been done. Why..why...do we have to find some one else to blame OTHER than the murderer???? GRRR.

Blame...the...murderer.....why is that so hard to understand? If some shoots you in the chest, do you blame the guy they bought the gun from or the guy holding the weapon....

Watch, I'm going to tie this into Iraq. Al Queda in Afghanistan hit the US in 2001, so we originally went after them..then Iraq..and back in 2003 the US Congress was gung-ho for Iraq as were most citizens, but why? Iraq didn't hit us two years earlier....because for some reason getting the person that got you is no longer good enough...we have to hunt down possible sources...no matter how off.

You guys all have valid points in saying the the guy pulling the trigger is the one to blame. Absolutely. There must be a reason, this country's murder rate is so so much higher than others though...there has got to be some kind of correlation between something out there and a lot of people dying at the hands of others, in the US.

I'll take that answer for general "city shootings" I don't accept that answer for "school shootings" and other oddities.

Why not? It's obvious that American society/culture in some way encourages this type of violence. There's no denying it.
