I can easy turn the intake camshaft without any movement in the chain (it turns inside the vanos), all the diy guides i found dont mention this, usually you see a picture of the cam locks on already. There are markings on the edge of the cams facing uppwards bank 1-4 and bank 5-8 so i know i got the tdc position right. But im gonna take the open wrench and get them in position so the cam locks fit

You can turn it because its the retardation/advance movement of the vanos.

Just wondering, since im not going to do anything at this point with the vanos units, do i need to remove them to change the upper chains and tensioners?

This is the group of parts that are recommended to be replaced.

Not necessary to remove vanos unless you have the vanos noise problem

Ok, does the vanos triggerplates need to come of to re-time the units before i put on the new chain? I rather ask alot of stupid questions, than pulling this appart again 😄

I would review the Beisan vanos repair procedures/instructions. They are well laid out and of course you do not have to do all of the instructions since you are not doing a vanos repair. Off of the top of my head I dont think you have to remove vanos camshaft sensor trigger wheel. Your just doing the timing chain and guides. Give it a read through. Very informative.
