What did you do to / for your E53 today??
Low on oil. That's exactly how i know to add oil. Watch the oil pressure light also it will usually accompany the lifter tick. It will disappear right when the sound does.
Six seconds is about exactly a quart low for my car. I have gas 3.0 M54. Full oil dead center warm engine 5 min. after shut down. My wife's X5 has a bad oil leak and it's been down low enough to trip the yellow low oil light while driving. It will be about two quarts low of that happens. I like going the litter tick at start. If it's more than 4 seconds I know I need to add half a quart or so then it goes away. |
If people would have mentioned what engine they have. I might have said secondary air pump. But you now how it goes.

Added about a half can of AC Pro Recharge R134a and got the A/C back to the point of keeping up with the Texas sun load again. Need to replace both front door lower seals next.

I also keep an eye on the oil level every week. Whenever the yellow low oil level light comes on, same here, it takes 2 quarts for it to get back close to max height on the dipstick. My X5 uses 1 quart of oil / 650 miles :yikes: My X5 also has the dreaded mayo issue during winter so a new cold weather CCV will go in this July (currently has the standard CCV). I am implementing the O2Pilot mod hopefully to eliminate the oil consumption issue. It seems this fix is the most correct way of addressing the issue. I will deal with the extra vacuum produced and definitely will monitor any other side effect it may cause. With the O2Pilot mod, I will install a one-way valve to the return line so as not to suck oil back to the intake. With the CCV work, OFHG and Vanos lines will be included (since I'm already there). To the poster having the lifter tick, keep an eye on the oil since M54 engine is notorious for burning oil. |

Max height on dipstick is about 3/4 quart over full. Full is center on the dipstick.
Before hydraulic lifters it was very common for lifter tick to go on for 10s of 1000s of miles. 5 sec. during start is causing no damage to the engine. I kind of like that it will tick a few seconds it gives me confirmation that the oil pump is doing its job. If it never ticked I wouldn't know. I only get the tick about 3 times a year when I drive enough quickly that I've not checked the oil level before it happens. |
Been teaching my son how to drive in the 4.4. He turned the power steering hard lock and held it while doing a parking drill ( I was outside directing) so now I have a leaking power steering line... :dunno:
Topped up the reservoir and ordered a new line.... gotta love it... |

Changed wife's front axle rear control arm. Just one so far I started with the right because that ball joint has failed. Holy crap it's bad too. The ball moves 2-3mm.
I couldn't get the inner tie rod to move in order to adjust the toe. I need some bigger tougher tool.to grab that tiny 13mm hex. Both elbows of the height sensor were completely rusted to the point they didn't turn. Fortunately the inner most one the nut loosened enough the screw acted as a swivel. I was able to get both to move again but they are shot beyond words. The ball joint when I cut it open half a cc of rust powder came out. |
