I got new Valeo wiper blades and a BMW All-Weather rubber liner in preparation for winter.

Unfortunately the wife found a couple of the failing caps before I did. The vacuum's impeller wheel did a nice job of pulverizing them I found after searching through the dust bag. :( |
Replaced driver side regulator just cuz it was old...
All easy peasy until the top stud / bolt decided to not loosen up. I guess somehow it broke free from being fixed and became freely moving (Lock nut & bolt)...This prevented loosening of the lock nut since there was no providing feedback. 1 hour of dremel grinding at the back of the stud later, I finally counter held it to free the bolt. |
I put it back together today after a long drug out Tcase chain replacement. Ordering a late model DS, then nearly getting scammed on a second driveshaft, and waiting to get my new spline piece welded to my old driveshaft ended up taking a week and half. But I got it all put back in and took the X5 for a spin. No more chain popping and no worries about stripping the driveshaft. Ready for snow.
I also replaced the Tcase carrier mount (it also serves as the trans mount). I filled the voids with urethane and it really helped shifter feel. The old one appeared to be original and saturated in oil thanks to a leaky shift rod selector seal. |
I need to get the TC chain ordered to fix my popping issue.
Did you get the chain from Cobra Trans? |
I finally ordered a Conforti Shark Injector for my 5MT 3.0 - thank you to Turner Motorsport for the 25% off Black Friday/Cyber Monday sale I couldn't resist - looking forward to pairing this up with my AFE and 4.8iS exhaust

I got the Conforti Shark Injector and Conforti Intake from Turner for my 6MT perf pkg '05 330i, paired them up with the UUC Corsa RSC3 catback full twin exhaust system. Loved that setup! The extra 200rpm kept me off the rev limiter (or shifting) approaching braking points on the Sebring track. |

Sigh. About 20 LED's on one of my angel eye rings was out, almost made it a year on the set I bought from China - Guess its time to go with Umnitza rings for long term reliability - emailed Lightwerkz, will have to have them do the labor for the refitting, as I have zero time for retrofitting nowadays

Received my new radiator, o-rings, water pump, etc. to fix a small coolant leak from the short pipe to the water pump. Radiator is preventative since I just ticked over 100k miles and had to do a coolant change anyway... Hoses have all been done.
Will be doing the changeout this weekend if things go according to plan (do they ever?). |

Hot selling 4*131mm e36 angel eyes lighting led SMD 3014 led angel eyes ring E46 E38 E39 with projector-in Angel Eyes from Automobiles & Motorcycles on Aliexpress.com | Alibaba Group Doubtful the solder joints broke, they were encased pretty good and actually really well made, Lightwerkz was happy with the looks/quality when installing - been my experience with LED's in headlights that they will eventually all fail to some degree and especially with the newer styles that they are spaced so close together (too much heat) that the heat will kill them - oh well, I'll unplug them for now, and revisit doing them over the winter. The angel eyes really made the truck stand out, even when used only as parking lights. |
going to install BSW stealth sub next week and side markers :)

Nope, but 'while I'm in there' going to replace it. I don't screw around with the cooling system longevity living in Vegas and regularly driving to Socal through the Mojave in summer. It was ~$220 iirc, so not that big of a deal in the grand scheme of things. It's had BMW coolant it's entire life as the PO had the maintenance done at the dealer and all I use is BMW coolant. Plus, I'm keeping this for the foreseeable future. |
With the colder weather that has descended upon Chi-Raq I noticed that it was taking the X a lot longer to reach the middle of the temp gauge. Remembered that last winter I had a DTC that said that the thermostat was stuck open, and because of the Polar Vortex I decided to wait until Spring or Summer to change it out. Unfortunately, Spring and Summer came and went and I completely forgot about the thermostat until now. Well with the temps in the upper 40's lower 50's I decided that the weather is not going to get any warmer so I changed the thermostat. Took about an hour to change. Had to remove the splash shield so that I could collect most of the antifreeze that came out of the engine. Even removing the fan clutch was fairly easy. Started the engine and looked for leaks but there were none. Took the X for a drive so that I could get it hot and not just let it idle on the driveway. The temp got up to 95C according to my app Torque on my tablet. So I would call this an FIX.

I charged my 01 and 03 x5 with my very expensive, but very wet weather friendly extension cord. Used a Stanley 8amp charger through the cig lighter. It is very nice that the 03 and older e53s have always hot/on cig lighters.
I do this every 7-10 days to keep the batteries topped up since they hardly get used sitting outside. Gets cold and snowy out here to. |

how did you like your BSW btw? |
- Changed my heater valve
- Started prepping for my drive to Tampa end of the month. Going to replace the vacuum pump, oil pressure switch, left front axle (GKN warranty which has baffled my mind), go get it aligned, and go through it one last time at some point this week. |
Cleaned and greased the sampling fan in the HVAC. Although that doesn't appear to have fixed the whining noise. On to the next option for what the noise is...

But that said, it is decently punchy and can keep up with the mids/highs of the factory setup. Low end is a little lacking, but anywhere north of ~60hz it's pretty solid. For the amount of space it takes up, it is a great option for sure. I am glad my truck came with it, though it was tuned so badly at first, I didn't even know it was there. If you are interested in how I re-installed it check out my thread... I redesigned the factory CD changer/BT/etc brackets to hold the BSW amp so it looks like a factory piece. |

Installed Syncro Design Works (only on Facebook, no real webpage yet) spherical thrust arm bearings in my 3.0L. Night and day difference over the well worn stock thrust bearings. Swapped in new factory lower ball joints as well. I've lost a little of the low level NVH dampening (which is that that factory fluid filled bushing does), but they are in no way harsh or jarring like some poly bushings I've used. Handling is much better. Turn-in in sharper and quicker and much less understeer when pushed to the limit. The suspension is otherwise stock "sport" settings.
Swapped out a right front CV joint after finding a torn boot. Installed the front PDC sensors, and will add the rear ones this weekend. |
Well, over the last month, I've been slowly buying (and minimally installing) various bits on the new-to-me 4.6is.
So far I've swapped to Sypder Auto smoked non-LED Tails with LED bulbs (yes, I did this intentionally), LED smoked side-markers, and gloss black kidney grills. I've purchased, and have in possession, but have not yet installed: Evox-R Bi-Xenon Projectors, Umnitza Opaque Orion V2 Halo Rings, and a Dynavin N6 unit. I've not yet purchased / received: Sub and Sub-enclosure to replace DSP sub box, and Mono Amp ....and just so it's semi-relevant for a "what did I do today" thread, I fabric taped the Dynavin Fakra Cable so it looks OEM when installed. http://i.imgur.com/Mak89Ue.jpg |

Yesterday I hooked up my Schumacher battery charger on manual mode and loaded up the Conforti Shark Injector onto my 5MT - took about 15 mins. Do I feel a difference? Heck yes, throttle is snappier, more torque down low and midrange, throttle response between gears is much better (drive by wire delay is almost nonexistent now)
Is it a night and day supercharged tune? Absolutely not, but I wasn't expecting that at all. I've had an APR tune on my previous 2.0T VW GLI and yes that was night and day and balls to the wall power for the money, but you won't get that on an NA motor. For all the 3 pedal guys (and probably the AT guys too), if you are putting in an intake or high flow filter, and/or exhaust, I definitely recommend the Shark upgrade - I got mine on sale for $270 which I was comfortable with paying (Black Friday sale at Tuner MS), sometimes they are on sale for $300 or so, but even at $350 it should be a worthwhile upgrade.  |

I messaged that seller to see if they can put together a kit for me. Tired of seeing my headlights in 100 pieces in the basement. Also doing a retrofit on my E36 as I hit a tire recently, and part of the reason was that the stock candlelight just isn't sufficient. |
Miniz - I just double checked my sizes on my Aliexpress order, the low beams were 125mm full circle - I will probably be ordering a backup set to have spares and just replace the one that has a few LED's out. The other 3 rings are still great, so I'm chalking it up to one dud ring for now
|
Quote:
Sorry to hear about your faulty SMD leds, especially as that ring only lasted less than 4 months , since August ,when you fitted it :( I also bought an X5 SMD kit (161mm +131mm) from same supllier as you, but opted not to fit it as I could notice the individual leds ,so I sold it:D Are you still buying from the same supplier or have you found another with better quality? |
^I planned on the same supplier and chalked it up to one faulty ring as the other 3 are fine, and the LED's are spaced very close and look uniform, plus the fitment is great - I was going to give it another month or so before I ordered from the same supplier - or I was going to go with the Umnitza LED's since supposedly they do not fail

PDC install complete. Had to piece everything together since you can't buy the retrofit kit anymore (I think). Front mudflap install complete too. Parking is much easier and my wife will actually want to drive it now.
The spherical bushings in the thrust arms are amazing. Still amazed at the difference in handling. |
Quote:

Quote:
However you do need to piece everything together. Which actually wasn't too bad. Worst / longest part for me was finding original BMW sensors that people didn't want insane amounts of money for. The other step that wasn't clear is that there is one small section of rear bumper wiring that you do need to locate that was included with the "kit". I got lucky on a parts X5 that was local to me on craigslist. About the only useful parts left on it was the rear pdc bits that I needed. As long as you have xenon lights from the factory, you likely have the PDC wiring in place. I have a list of P/Ns that should be useful. Just let me know and I'll post them. |
Any reason you used BMW sensors and not the aftermarket ones? I replaced 2 dead sensors with aftermarket a year ago and they seem to work fine.

Yeah it blows. The mountain was the first spot I thought of too, but the past two times I went I got there after and left before the people parked next to me.
Pretty frustrating regardless. I don't know what I want to do. I'm leaning towards waiting until after winter, or I found a semi local silver 4.6is being parted. They want $500 for the rear bumper assembly (won't sell just the cover) with rear parking sensors. Do I just sack up and get the rear IS bits? The front had an electrical fire so the bumper is melted but it looks like the lower IS lip may have made it unscathed, maybe I could get a good deal on it. |

Learned the MKIV DVD navigation drive does not like DVD-R disks
Updated my MKIV DVD navigation computer with the V32 firmware and replaced the BMW 2004 map disk with my own disk I burnt with the 2015 map data but the navigation system would return intermittent errors about unable to read the map disk about 30% of the time. Tried Verbatim DVD-R, Magnavox DVD-R and Memorex DVD-R all causing read issues. Thought my MKIV DVD lens was on its way out...
I then decided to try a Memorex DVD+R disk and works like a charm! Have rebooted the navigation system many times and no disk errors are seen. Have never experienced a DVD drive favoring one format over the other (DVD-R vs. DVD+R) until now... |

Great, can I do the bleed by myself or do I need a partner to help? I'll be doing this soon. I just have to tackle my alternator. |
You can do it yourself. Make sure the bleeder will crack open first - then close it, remove CDV, rehook up line, crack open bleeder again, and let it drip away for a few.

I was able to change out my belts and tensioners this weekend. I hate to admit that it took me over 30 mins to figure out how to install the new hydraulic version. The mech version has two mounting bolts and the hydr has three. I almost gave up surmising I must have been shipped the one for the M62 by mistake. But after a new round of flipping the tensioner sideways, upside down, angled left, right, left, left again, I f i n a l l y matched up the needed bolt pattern. If I had know if would be such a mental exercise I would have taken pictures for any DIY attempts.
Didn't help that the oil filter housing was right in the way. |

Just wondering if I can go through the car wash with it on, have my doubts. |
I played around with Carly on the X5. ;)
Get your mind out of the gutter guys, it's just a car app similar to Torque. Been popular with the newer chassis and they are now developing it more towards the older chassis too. Check out my video showing all the modules Carly can access on our E53's! |
Quote:
There is a really big thread on e90post where e9x owners had tons of problems with this app, and some guy even fried his FRM module using Carly. I certainly hope that's not the case for e53, but I would think twice before using it. We both know how sensitive BMW electronics are. |
I know the early revisions were pretty buggy, back when it was called BMWhat app, so that's why I didn't adopt it that quickly. However, I've been meaning to upgrade my diagnostics laptop (Dell D630 loaded with INPA/DIS) and stumbled upon a compelling thread using Carly as a new substitute to INPA/DIS because of the speed of it. What would take me 10 minutes to do takes 2 minutes, and the UI is so much more friendly.
I think there is a place for Carly. As always with coding, connect your car up to a charger so you don't brick your modules; in my case, I left the car running so the alternator could keep the battery charged. |
Just wondering if I can go through the car wash with it on, have my doubts.[/QUOTE]

Upgraded my Nav software to V32.2
I also ordered the new 2015 map disk just in case we ever want to try and use it:thumbup: |
put the mercedes tail light harness on my left tail light during my lunch break. used the instructions here:
http://www.xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-foru...t-fix-diy.html aside from losing the white connector retainer down into the bowels of my hatch area somewhere, it only took 5 minutes and works just fine. my dash light would come on each time I'd drive the car until I held the brake pedal for about 5 seconds and it would go off. got tiring to watch/do. Now I'm just curious if I can find that white retainer on another bmw at the u-pull since the crushed the only x5 last month. |
|
Quote:
Cleaned it up and used a small piece of aluminium foil to decrease the contact resistance but I'm going to make a more permanent repair (to all the lamps) soon - either this wired mod. or silver solder on the contact points. I'll remove the tail light assemblies to do this, as it will make it a LOT easier to do. |
just fyi. the mercedes mod only cost $16.88 shipped off ebay and I didnt have to pull the housing out to do it. just popped the plug out after removing the interior panel and used one of the small precision flat blades and an 8mm socket to bolt the ground wire to one of the tail housing bolts. you literally pop one wire out of the tail harness and click it into the middle of the mercedes harness and swap your bulb and done.
much easier than fiddling with solder and such and its done forever. but thats just me. |
Quote:
holder and there's four to do. NZ$120 to fix this is more than it's worth, so silver solder it'll likely be! :dunno: |
ahh gotcha. too bad you cant find any of the several models of mercedes they come from in a junkyard there.
edit: wow you're right, cheapest I could find on ebay australia was $25 shipped. really makes me wonder what the exchange rate really is? like $1 US = $1.50 au?? |

In Labor I have no clue yet because I haven't paid him. Its a good friend who does a lot of business with me as exchange work so we'll see. I'm sure I'm still in for an easy $500. His tech would of done it in 8 hours (he timed himself) had the bracket not been broken and tied up the job. |
Yesterday, ATF gushed out of after parking the car (60miles from home).. initially thought was, transmission cooler since it was coming out of the front of the engine. Towed it to the closest bmw indy and after diagnosing the issue, turns out the power steering pump crapped out. I was somewhat relieved until he told me it'll be ~$900 to change it, $450 parts and the rest is labor... I usually budget about $1k per year for repair which barely use half, but this year i maxed it in one shot and it's still first week of January :-)... Talking to my parts guy locally, the power steering bumps on bmw's rarely go out but they are expensive to replace. If i wasn't too far from home, i would have towed it home and changed it myself but at this point, towing 60miles is going to cost $$ and my savings after doing it myself will be minimal.

almost time to rotate tires after 5K miles

i have tow with my insurance, but they only tow to the closest dealer or shop. They don't tow it to your house (bs reason) because i wanted to tow it home initially.. |

I have tow with insurance as well as AAA. I have never used the insurance one. AAA works really well.

The main one is from where I live but they shut down in morgan hill and the next closest is not to far... but I'dk I went there with my x5 once and talked about the twin charged 850ci they built. But they were dicking me around and I ended up not getting software installed because they had me sit there over 2 hours and told me to come back a week later Cuz they had made a mistake. |
Today, I started my X!
I've put on less than 500kms on it since October :( / :) |
Checked my receipt from last oil change. Im around 10k miles since August. Didn't even realize, will be getting oil change soon.
Also cleared codes yesterday I'm new to the obdII scanners. I just drove over 200 miles today and no check engine light came on... Does that mean I'm fine? |

Soooooo, can Carly do things like reset the xDrive adaptations, cycle the DSC/ABS pump when bleeding the brakes, etc. like DIS? I couldn't tell from their website. All I could tell from their website is it can code and reset my battery (for an extra charge, of course...). |
Today I polished my headlights with the 3M kit with the protective sealant for the headlights. Worked pretty well and took me about one hour +/- ice tea breaks.

From what I see, with Carly, on e53, only lighting module and CAS can be coded, some bulb check, DRL, seat belt alarm, etc.

Had to fish my driver's side window out of the door today... I'm sure the clip broke that holds the glass to the regulator. I'm guessing the PO had the regulator replaced and they either reused the clips that were on it, or it's a non-OEM regulator. I knew it was a matter of time as it always made noise when closing the door. Poor repair-job most likely, but I'll know for sure after I open it when the OE replacement arrives.
FYI, fishing it out is fairly simple... and keeps you from having to pull the door panel to raise your window. I used some 3M double sided tape (the stuff they mount body panels/trim with) and a small pair of needle nose pliers (the shorter stubby kind). Put a piece of tape on each side of the glass and use those as cushions and grip for your pliers while you lift. In my case I had to lift at the rear of the glass since that was the side that popped out of the regulator. Note: this will only work if one side of your window is still attached to the regulator. Will not work if the window has completely come off or regulator has failed. |
Well... I did the dreaded 6HP26X trans service and Liqui Molly engine flush. F**K this B**L S**T is all I can say right now! I have had the parts and fluid sitting in my garage since September and finally had a buddy around to help this evening. I had a surging / slacking issue in fifth gear ONLY and after talking to ZF I went forward with this fluid change. The only redemption to my evening was that my 4 1/2 year old daughter wanted to "help" and "learn how to fix our cars." By the way do NOT go with the vaico filter for the trans... It kept falling out... I had to re-use the existing ZF filter seal to keep it from falling back out of the transmission. And the Febi trans pan gasket does not fit... I will be calling ECS in the morning and might freak out on them a bit... Updates will follow when I have them.

When you can stick with the original BMW parts. We ave a enough BMW dealers on line that if you shop them you can get reasonable prices on replacement parts and save yourself and incredible amount of head aches. |
^I agree with this. On a $2 oil drain plug, sure maybe go with the aftermarket and not notice a difference, but not on major seals, parts, filters etc
|
cursed mine quietly under my breath as I saw the oil leak again. valve cover gasket was replaced last Friday. Oil leak is back again.
Will take it to my indy and check what is leaking again.. and if it's the valve seal.. .may just get another cover and try again. |

Use a factory valve cover gasket. I have had bad experience on my S54 w/a non-factory VCG...PITA

Replaced my water pump, changed out an idler pulley, replaced one of my broken PDC sensor mounts on the rear bumper and finally matched the tint on the front two windows

Actually yesterday..... but....oil change....brake fluid change....and found out I need my oil filter housing gasket replaced....slow leak....which explains the quart I added a month ago and the oil burn smell when popping the hood.

removed, drivers door card to find out why it sounded like something was loose when I closed the door , couldn't find anything, end up now where my drivers door doesn't turn the interior light on , other ones do ,
thing is , when I open any doors with the engine running it doesn't say "door open" any more |
that switch is part of the door latch
it might have come off? hence the noise and now the lack of idiot light look real hard at both the screw/clip that holds the bottom of the glass to the regulator and also the SLIDER that goes up and down the track. the screw/clip has a expanding nut kind of a thing and parts always brake off leaving the thing loose. |
its does actually make more noise when the window is down , like the window bit is loose ,
but if that switch is disconnected would it take out all the other doors? |
I discovered that my driver's side rear lower shock bolt is missing. WTF? :(
|
I rolled down the rear window and it made a loud pop. Luckily it rolled back up. I'm not touching it. Ordered a new reg right away! I just replaced the clip last year.
