I replaced the front driver's side air spring in my 4.8 with an Arnott. Hopefully this solves my uneven stance. Now to find someone with the software and skills to help me drop it an inch or two. :)

I don't know how to do that, but I do have the INPA/DIS/NCSexpert software suit. If it uses those and you can find instructions I'd be more than willing to bring up my laptop and we can give it a go.

I have the first aid kit and the OEM fire extinguisher in my E46. I still need to add them to the X5.

andrewwynn 03-16-2017 06:46 PM

Where did you source them and thanks for reminding me i also want the fire extinguisher. I have TWICE helped extinguish small engine fires without any extinguisher not fun. In one case a cousin shows up to a family reunion with smoke coming from engine compartment. He left an oily rag in the engine compartment and it worked its way to the exhaust manifold. When driving fast the wind kept the temp too low to ignite but when he stopped driving : poof fire.

That's almost bigfoot rare! I think importing them used can be a hassle. Maybe easier if they are emptied first. But it is super rare. I want one so bad in my E39. Gotta match my euro 1st aid :)

I got my fire extinguisher and first aid kit 10 years ago when it was easier to get. It seems they are hard to source now.

I have not turned on my truck in about 10 days. I think I will go show her some love this Saturday.

OrangeFurious 03-17-2017 12:47 PM

Last night I parked that car with 95k or so miles on the odometer. An hour or two later I came out to find the dash sitting at 156k+. After a moment of deep confusion I realized it was set to KM not miles. Stayed that way the drive home.

Today I'm back at 95k miles.

WTF?

Joshdub 03-17-2017 01:44 PM

Mine did the same thing after I uninstalled my Eonon. It went back after I r&rd the battery cables.

Metrics to English conversion will happen if you press the odometer reset button while you turn the key to off. So usually when it happens by accident you're trying to use one of the hidden test menu options it's really easy to accidentally switch to metric. I did the same thing by accident a couple days ago and I left it so much easier to tell if you're going to have to worry about ice when it's positive versus negative.

Actually I spoke too soon because I'm looking at my dashboard and it is still in miles how confusing is that. I'm sure that odometer conversion is something similar maybe you press the button while you're trying to ignition on for example

This does remind me of one of the best pranks I ever played. We were in a rental car and I was in the passenger seat when the driver hit full throttle to get onto the freeway. When he looked left to check his blind spot I happened to notice a big button in the middle of the dash that said E/M on it. Right about the time we were crossing 60 65 mph I hit that button and then it jumped to 110 km/h.

Since it was a rental car that had a fairly good engine in it and the guy actually thought he was going over a hundred miles an hour. Pretty much once in a lifetime chance for the set up on that one

Nice upgrade. My X came that way. Wife's is still amber lens.

Another mod I did to my X is that I tweaked my tail light so that all four brake lamps light since they use two-filament lamps for the run only light.

The 01 model didn't apparently have wiring to the bright filament but my lenses were replaced due to an accident from P O. The connector didn't have a pin for the bright filament on the second lamp but the light assembly had the wiring for it and the mod was crazy simple to do. I drilled a 1/16" hole in the two metal bars I wanted to connect and took some 1/16" spring steel wire and made some jumpers that look like staples.

Very happy with the results. Not only twice the brake light brightness, the whole red lights up bright and maybe more importantly, I have redundancy: when a lamp fails that side will just be dimmer.
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...3fc359c9cd.jpg

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...e540e08b90.jpg

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...d045f48f5b.jpg

I ended up discovering the internal wiring for the bright filament on MY X that's not on wife's when her brake lights failed from a design flaw in the lamp assembly.

The metal ring that forms the contact for the bulb is held in position by a plastic post that is melted into a plastic rivet at the top. The problem (design failure) is that when eventually the contact gets dirty the resistance causes heat to generate and the spring pressure on the contact pushes the contact away when it gets hot enough to melt the plastic post.

Both sides of wife's X had the problem but one side stopped working at about 112,000 miles. When I fixed the non working side I first checked the other side of her car and it was 95% as bad as the first side. I repaired that side and then of course checked my car.

My X had the entire tail lamp assemblies replaced with some made in 2009 which had the extra wiring internal shown in the pics above.

I thought I took a video of the before & after but can't seem to find it. I love the improvement. Before the fix it looked like a lamp was burned out every time the brakes were used because only half the red lights up bright.

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

wpoll 03-18-2017 03:22 PM

The tail light failure is well known design flaw that many of us have delt with. I "fixed" mine with the solder fix but they still play up from time to time. I looked into the fix that uses the MB lamp holders but it's stupid money here (for all four tail lamps) so I'm going to mod my tails and wire the lamps in with a custom mod.

Be aware that the pre-facelift and facelift tails are different and the mod shown above by andrewwyn might not work on the later facelift cars. In fact it could damage the LCM, which lights up the tails progressively using PWM, depending on the need. Tails only is four dim lamps, normal braking adds brightness to two of the four and sudden braking lights all four brightly (and brighter). Or so I believe - I can't actually get behind the car to see!!

The PWM signal results in each single filament 21W tail lamp getting an average of about 5v as a tail, 9v as normal brake and the full 12v during sudden braking. Clever... But a shame about the connection design....

Black looks really good...I would put 4.8is full packet! Hamann antiwing on the rear spoiler, black grill, thresholds under doors and windguards on door windows!

Ryoken 03-19-2017 04:49 AM

started putting the beast back together after changing rear wheel bearing , 5 minutes it took me to re assemble rear hub and all that gubbins, then it took a further 6 hours to get the drive shaft into the hub,
THEN just when I thought all I had to do was the rear brake shoes, the heavens opened up and it rained, so ANOTHER day , I'm without it
OH on a side note
because I'm an absolute halfwit, before I dropped the suspension stuffs, I didn't release the pressure on the airbag, so now its kinda bit twisted and distorted in shape. yeah I can re connect it properly back together with the clip but it doesn't look that good , when the air builds up will it re shape it or have I got to buy another one of them now :)

squidzilla 03-21-2017 10:41 AM

I replaced the window regulator on the 5mt. The front sure was harder than the rear. I would have replaced the front clip only, but wanted to have that be a separate project and wanted to button the X back up as quickly as possible.

Then replaced my Home Depot Exide battery. Those are the only batteries to buy since they have a no questions asked 40 month, non prorated replacement policy. No load test, no battery test. Nothing. Just take it. This battery was only two years old but had been sitting on the shelf for months before I bought. I was newer then and did not know to look for that production date back then.

DougPEX5 03-21-2017 10:08 PM

Replaced the expansion tank on my 2002 4.4. I tried to only replace one part for a change, as opposed to everything I touched. This was a bit out of the norm for me, so of course two leaks developed. A week later a new coolant hose and radiator drain plug and back up and running. So glad to be behind the wheel of a BMW again! One question for the group....One bolt between the expansion tank and bracket will not fully tighten or loosen. I think there is a nut that continues to turn inside the bracket. The other bolt fits tight. Should I pull it all out and replace the bracket or let it go?

andrewwynn 03-22-2017 08:30 AM

It sounds like a case of it is doing its job already. If it's tight but won't torque and there are other bolts you should be good. If you can't remove it's not going to likely vibrate loose either.

New snorkel to the air cleaner housing. Texas heat and ozone finally cracked the flex section. Rear brake pads show evidence of more towing the last three years. I'll probably have to replace my Akebonos at 100,000 miles this time.

Debadging is one of those things you are on the fence about when you do it the first time, but then you never want to own a car that is not debadged after. I've been doing it since I was 17.

Not snagging my towels on emblems alone is worth it, let alone the much cleaner look.

Totally depends on the car and badge. I've seen plenty of useless badges (24DOHC - Really Ford, really we care so much about the valve count it needs to be written on the trunk?) and quite a few that are tasteful and add to the aesthetic (my E93 M3 - not biased at all).

four.8is 03-28-2017 12:30 PM

Thx RB. That's one of the reasons I took them off. Towels always snagging on those corners.
Even my lambswool wash mitt was getting snagged and was leaving small hairs caught behind the badge; really annoying...waxing is gonna be easier too. It's a win win situation all around.

Joshdub 03-28-2017 12:31 PM

3M headlight restoration kit
However, I felt the 3M polishing compound was not doing its job too well, and it wasn't enough of it in that little pouch they supply with the kit.
I had previously bought some Meguiar's Plast-x polishing compound, and that worked very well.
500 grit, 800 grit, 3000 grit wet sanding, and final step polishing.

I tried using a battery powered drill but didn't have a ouch juice for the job.
Ended up using the electric power drill. Much faster and better results.

four.8is 03-29-2017 10:13 PM

I'm planning to do tail lights too but only 3000 wet sanding and polish.
After that, install some protective film on top.
By the way, I used some zymol wax to protect the headlights for now but that won't do anything long term , a film still needs to be applied .

Ball joint squeak can be fixed in seconds. I had an insane squeak in my previous car that drove me insane until I cut a tiny hole in the boot and sprayed 1 sec spray of wd-40. This was only a stop-gap solution to save my insanity while the part was on order since was my only car. It's. sure fire way to determine exactly which joint though.

Washed the X....and when I went to dress the wheels, I spied a nail on the outer shoulder on the passenger Rear.

I feel your pain.

Bad alignment chewed to the metal belts on both front tires of wife's X so I swapped rear to front and since we both have the same car I took both our spares and put on her rears.

Bad move: dry rot on old spares completely self destructed within the first 100 miles.

On good days.

On this particular day I met her with my car and did a five tire two car tire exchange to get her a full set of matching tires that weren't ticking time bombs.

The tires were full tread and showed no rot just too old an apparently brittle

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...f48ba1f12f.jpg

Bonus pic of my hand in one of the gaping holes on the outside of the tire.

We've switched to Dunlop grand trek wt mk 3 and mk2 and never turning back. I've measured over 3/8g acceleration on wet slush and over 1/2 g braking on same. That's half as good as dry pavement.

I use them year round so I have effectively infinite more traction than the next guy when I hit that first rain in a while oily spot in Chicago. They have paid for themselves in just a few short months.

In my case with M3s and runflat they stick out past the rim. Well automatic curb protection. I skipped off a curb going 30 the other day. When I pulled over to see if I just shredded $600 worth of tires not to mention rims all that happened was the tire shine from a recent wash was dull.

Is that the case with all runflats?i noticed the conti sportcontact5 ssr I got for the rears the lip sticks way out , more than any tire I've seen. I kinda like it, more protection but I was wondering if that's the case with the runflats .

andrewwynn 04-02-2017 04:13 AM

I don't think all run flats do that but the type that work on normal rims I think are more likely to be such.

Funny thing: didn't know M3 were runflat until I had them mounted and noticed the curious fact they stuck out past the rim.

Compressor rebuilt

Got a chance to rebuild the compressor with the bagpipingandy kit, the cylinder walls had some dirt inside possibly from the old ring grinding against them.
All good, much quieter, works as it should.
I should say my compressor ran just fine, a little on the low side as far as pressure goes, but I didn't want to let it fail so I did it as a preventative thing.

Daughter helped too so that was a plus. She really likes turning wrenches and she's only 3.

Hey Slick, per his instructions, you should not grease anything, it's supposed to run dry.

Phew. Found a spot that still carries my 315 tire...turns out michelin stopped making it sometime last year. Guess I'm going to have to triple check the production code when I swing by to pick it up...

I have Michellin Latitude Tour HP and I got a nail in sidewall last summer after just buying it months before. I was sooooo pissed, but as I was waiting for my wife with wheel keys (first time I ever left key at home 3 hours away in my garage), I found a website that DID have stock of the rear 315 wide tire. I got a call the tire was last in stock in Canada apparently. I was soooo lucky to get it. but at a premium. $615. Glad you had good luck as well

Had Indy replace my mechatronics seal, 4 valve body seals and tranny fluid drain fill, new tranny filter, new transfer case fluid, new front and rear diff fluids, oil change, two front wheel bearings and cv boot replacements, brake fluid flush. all in it cost $2,250 CAD. I performed the long tranny break in procedure myself (thanks to my local bretheren Doru and Florin for compiling the info and purpose) and i think it helped a bunch. I could have performed a lot of this myself but time has been tight and i just wanted it done

Oh and finally got around to installing the new Delphi fuel pump last night since I received my fancy fuel ring removal tool. worked perfectly!!!!! And I'm sure this is all in my head, but the new Delphi pump (which is physically smaller) seems to start the X5 faster and pedal response seemed quicker. Original one still worked perfect at 205k kms but why not replace it since I've seen some "stranded" posts on here lately.
This new Delphi pump is a newer, slightly different looking pump. install took 1.5 hours, so not bad at all and in that time I vacuumed and took the time to undo some fasteners holding the black rubber down, instead of ripping the black rubber under seats, over metal frame so I could bend the black rubber back without damage.
I still have the original pump incase this new one craps out for some reason. it sucks when you keep a good usable old part just as a back-up part... I've got no storage space left on my shelves in garage.

I got a fuel pump that got a burned contact and it died. Got an OE from a dealer for about $325, installed myself - instead of special tool, used a piece of wood and rubber mallet... Got it done in the middle of night, as in the morning she had to go to work... lol...

Now I need to find time to check with the BMW NA about that recall...

jsoto 04-05-2017 08:03 PM

So on the 3rd year post warranty expiration, I sorta knew anything I was doing for the truck was going to outweigh the ~market cost~. LOL, 14 years later and for this week, got the BBK repowdercoated, VCG, couple of hoses and the waterpump. Last week, got one fresh tire and this weekend, another fresh tire going on.

I'm hoping that's it for 2017. Hoping is the key word

so now I got to find where I can get 2 new ones of them , so now I got a dsc error still AND a break check linings error
I'm not happy

Played around a little bit with cornering lights on my 2004 E53. The corresponding fog light will light on turn signal activation and remains lit for a few seconds after the turn signal is cancelled. Not sure if I will keep it, just wanted to see if I could make it happen. I love this feature on the newer E70 and E83 models.

My lord! Well spent 1.5 months paint correcting and then finally tonight applied CQuartz Ceramic coating since she sits outside. Installed a new license plate holder on the boot lid since the old one had rusted and seized bolts. Next up is to polish and seal the shadow line trim, clean windows and apply CQUartz plastic sealant in headlights.

I bought these for $32

SET OF NEW ABS WHEEL SPEED SENSORS FRONT REAR LEFT RIGHT FOR BMW E53 X5 2000-04

because mine are over 100K miles and well, IMHO, the over 100K stuff like this doesn't owe me anything.

The old ones were frozen solid in their spindle mounting holes. The only way I was able to get them out was during my front end rebuild including CV axles and tapped on the backside of the sensor to force it out. Wire brushed the corrosion out of the hole and then lubed the crap out of it for reinsertion of the old. When I got the new ones it was easy to swap them in.

I'll install the new rear sensors soon when I do a rear suspension rebuild and replace those CV axles as well.

Just finished Opticoating the summer wheels, after I cleaned and clayed them. Winters are off and need to be cleaned. I realized I need one new wheel roundel.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...3737975bbe.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...3737975bbe.jpg

Noticed a shit ton of oil on the drivers side suspension, not sure where it came from. I'll have to take the wheel off, steam clean and examine when I am not exhausted.

Then I need to replace the steering wheel trim that's peeling.

Who said being a BMW enthusiast was easy...

Dropped the valve cover off at the local powder coating shop. In the middle of replacing a CCV and pulled the intake manifold to replace the torx hardware with hex socket hardware and all the gaskets. They looked to be all the original gaskets. Replaced all of the vacuum hoses.

o.O Pulling the valley pan to fix that leak. Pulling the oil pan to check the oil pump bolts/loctite them. Replacing vanos seals because they were leaking.

Spent an hour cleaning up the engine compartment. She is 13 years old with 145,000 miles on her and I have never cleaned the engine before today. The secrets are Scrubbing Bubbles bathroom cleaner and Aerospace 303.

wpoll 04-22-2017 08:17 PM

That is one clean engine bay - wow!

Do you mean Aerospace 303? Must check that out....

Last week I got a warning about brake linings on the CC so today I went from this... (not my photo)...

http://upload.review33.com/car/20100...0013526773.jpg

... to this.... (this one IS my photo!)

http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f2...psmxlcj0kd.jpg

I painted the new rotor centres with a ceramic hi-temp paint to keep the centres from rusting up too badly. New pads and a new sensor completed the task.

I found I'm missing a guide pin seal (cap) so now I'm on the hunt for one of those. Yes, I know I can buy them from lots of online places but the freight to NZ is a killer - up to $40 for a $2 cap. Might even ask at the local dealership!

Next up - plastic grills in front bumper!

Yes spray on a can of Scrubbing Bubbles bathroom cleaner. Spray it on everything except the headlight lenses. Let it foam for 5 minutes and rinse lightly with a garden hose. Let dry and apply the Aerospace 303 for a clean, matte finish.

Impressive! I've always wanted to do a engine bay cleaning, but fear something crazy (electrically) when taking a hose to it.

Thanks for the tip. I've been using black magic foaming engine degreaser followed by a light coating of armor all for a semi gloss finish. I prefer your results though as it looks more consistent than the sometimes streaky nature of even a light coating of armor all.

replaced front sway bars , and replaced rear wheel sensor
Q though
the rear drivers (UK) side was bad (3 yellow lights) replaced sensor , and ive still got 3 lights
to clear these , do I have to get the codes read/erased
or disconnect battery all night
or will it clear them itself
will need them gone for MOT (UK)

answers on a postcard

Cheers

Hey guys, did rear pads and sensor on my car for the first time , pretty pleased actually. The sensor broke coming apart there was so much crap in there but the wiring is intact and after a bit of ferking about it all came together. The light stayed on though but after trying the reset process for a E46 it has gone out ! Very happy camper just quietly. I bought pads from Repco over here in OZ and they were on special ,older model runout reduced to $30 bucks. Thermoquiet ceramic pads, made by a big manufacturer over here Ferodo . My first attempt at diy in many years years ,back in the day when cars were much simpler I did all my own stuff and really happy to get back on the tools.

There is absolutely no reason to replace the sensor if you replaced pads before the light went on. The sensor is just a circuit that goes open if you wear through the sensor, thus needing to be replaced.

bcredliner 04-25-2017 12:56 PM

Technically you are correct. Key word in my post is should. It is recommended the sensors be replaced when the pads are replaced regardless if the light has come on or not. Logic is there are both inexpensive and best practice.

I narrowed down the list of reasons my 4.8 might be farting. It has a low, long groan/fart noise when turning, but only in the morning. Does it all through my 45 minute AM routine then behaves perfectly when I leave work.

i ruled out suspension (just about totally rebuilt anyway), wheels (same), and motor mounts before going to the Indy. They confirmed the above and eventually landed on a worn power steering pump. Haven't done any work yet and they seem a bit unsure so don't want to throw money at noises just yet.

I haven't heard of the powersteering making farting sounds, but I have definitely heard it being described as something similar to mating whales.

If you make the sound happen, open the lid to the of the ps res and check to see if the fluid is frothy.

I had the same thing - front sensor was locked it so hard it shattered before I could pull it out. The rear just popped out no problem. Used a new front sensor (was planning to replace it anyway) and rear was only removed to check it. Good thing it came out OK! ;)

X5Flyboy 04-26-2017 02:43 PM

Been a while since last posting - not too many original parts left on my 2001 X5 - Last 6 months have seen complete new brakes w/drilled & slotted discs, new tranny, replaced 2 front struts & multiple front end steering parts due to an accident, replaced cable to position steering wheel up/down. front passenger window regulator, and had the transfer case replaced a couple years ago. - The last 6 months I had over $20k of repairs or replacement, not counting a month's stay in West St Louis (+ rental car) while some mechanical repairs were done so I could get back to Idaho.

Stupid? Crazy? Foolish? Yeah, all those things. But at 67, I'm not looking for a new car. My sisters keep asking me to get one. I reply, "I am..., piece by piece."

It took me over a year to find an X5 Sport, 4.4, with NO sunroof in 2004/2005. Easy you say? Now eliminate all white, black, and gray cars. Rare as hen's teeth. As you can tell from below, it has had serious upgrades. including SiriusXM.

It's comfortable, fun to drive, and is responsive as an M-car (which I cannot fit into) Guess I'm one of those Mark Twain referred to when he sad, "Nobody likes change but a baby."

Am on my way back east this Sunday (30 April) Nashville, Raleigh, Charleston(SC). Happy Trails!

Are you really tall and that's why you wanted No sunroof ?
After sitting in an X5 without a sunroof, I wish I didn't have one, as I'd prefer the extra headroom.
Any reason you didn't want a 2006 year?

What's the temp ambient? When cold my wife's power steering sounds exactly like "whales humping" until friction warms up the fluid. It was a little low and topping off made it better.

A put put put sound sounds like a sticking ball joint. You said most were replaced. Take an audio recording and share (video will include sound). If a joint not usually too difficult to find. Have somebody turn the wheel to reproduce the sound and put your hand on the various joints. A stick-slip joint will have a distinct vibration.

Not on the e53 but did bilstein HD front struts on my late model 325i e30 vert along with e90 drop hats for a very mild drop in the front. Tomorrow am doing brake lines (they were crumbling upon moving caliper after removing from strut assembly) and when my FCP order gets here it will get new inner/outer tie rods and meyle CAB's.

Last weekend did timing belt/tensioner, water pump, drive belts, and sway bar end links.

Had already done struts on it but the Monroe ones sucked... I hated the ride quality. Pulled them out with less than 1000 miles on them.

This weekend the E53 is getting some love though... I have an Ascendant Audio Havoc 12" sub going in now that the wife's diesel e70 is taking up baby and hauling duties. I will soon have a BSW setup for sale... I think anyway.

Sorry, couldn't resist. :D But they are pretty expensive. They don't give application specific pricing anymore in the Bav Auto catalog, but they are pricey.

Edit: They are $346.80 for a set of 8. Ouch. HAH, and they are actually $1.90 MORE expensive if you buy the set of 8 SKU. If you buy 8 individually they are cheaper. :dunno:

The BavAuto coils are $350, the NGK R plugs were $65 (with a 20% off for buying a $2 NAPA bucket to drop them in).

Big difference, vibration free, quiet idle (feels like the engine is off), instant throttle response at all loads/RPMs/speeds. Transformed the drivability of the X.

The Bosch Plat IR Fusion 4 plugs that came out after 100k miles service looked great, all 8 plugs showed 4 clear spark paths across the insulators, NAPA didn't carry them, so I went with the similar NGK R plugs this time.

Very worthy upgrade to the X5. I love it on my 4.6is

bcredliner 05-01-2017 01:09 PM

FYI-Dinan didn't state the results with just the cold air system added to the 4.6. With the throttle body and 3A software they stated horsepower gain of 14 and torque gain of 11, both @ 6500 rpms.

Yes its all good. I had the Dinan software added once I installed the Dinan throttle body. Its very pleasing and moves the X well!!!

Sounds wonderful.

I need to do something to mine. The Dinan exhaust is too quiet. Thinking about doing cutouts or something.

If you are going to make a change consider upgrading the entire exhaust to maximize back pressure reduction.

I'm going to do some experimenting with it. Have a couple of ideas but may have to try multiple options to find the one I am happiest with. :dunno: I love the Dinan exhaust sound... just want it louder.

Wow so you want it louder. I have the Dinan exhaust on my 4.6is with intake, dinan throttle and Dinan tune. It sounds fierce and moves well. Plenty loud for me when you step on it. I do like that when cruising on the highway there is no drone or annoying in cabin resonance. I bet if you remove the center resonator in favor of just an X-pipe you will get the more sound you are looking for. As i understand the center resonator has an x pipe in it but is heavily insulated to cut more sound.

Suggest you consider TPS electric cutouts as that gives you the option to cruise with a great but reasonable sound or open the cutouts a little or to point neighbors call the police.

Yeah, I have to get under there and see what it looks like as far as clearances and such. Was thinking of doing electric cutouts in front of the resonator going around it to meet back up before the Dinan mufflers. Wanted to see what that sounded like... X pipes are an option, etc. Lots of options and I think I'll have to try multiple iterations to see which I prefer. :dunno:

I was definitely considering cutouts, just not sure how I wanted to utilize them yet. Probably not in a "dump" capacity like on muscle cars... but you never know. ;)

bcredliner 05-03-2017 03:17 PM

I installed the cutouts just after the rear 02 sensors at same distance from exhaust manifolds. Since the 'flaps' are controlled electrically and will open any amount you choose I don't see any reason to locate them any other place though my goal was performance, no sound goal.

After looking at the RealOEM diagrams... that looks like the ideal place to put them. Did you have them opening as dumps, or skipping around the resonator to meet the muffler piping down stream as I was thinking?

As dumps. I wouldn't go to cutouts if you are just going around the resonator. Not a value.

I'll try it that way first.

Your value is in performance, whereas mine is in audible tone so we are after different goals. I think I'd love to hear what the Dinan mufflers sound like without the resonator on there though.

Gotcha. I know I've seen a vid of someone's with cutouts...

Edit: This was it...

But this is pretty nice and with Dinan mufflers:

BTW Brian, took your advice and did the plasti dip on the front grilles. Only have one done so far, but with the glossifier, it looks 100% better than those cheesy 6 series style grilles. I'll post pics when complete.

After 74,000 miles on the Yokohama YK580s, they were finally down to 5/32" so it was off to Discount Tire for another set. Trouble though, is they aren't made anymore and the replacement tire, the 740, doesn't come in the 235/65R17 size. Since these are probably the last set I'll buy for this vehicle, I settled for the YK-HTX. Have to run them 2psi higher to get the same steering response, but the ride is a touch softer.

Over all the ride is Great but cant really go fast here in NYC with this pot holes cant afford to crack another rim and tires. A bit stiffer ride very responsive hugs the road specially with the 315's

It was time for a visit to my friendly service writer at Autobahn for an oil change (M series for the summer), rear pad install and brake fluid flush. He kindly noted seepage at the oil pan and rear main and offered to repair ;). Can't quite justify spending twice the vehicle's value , but he understands .

An extra six thousand miles of boat towing on this set of brakes knocked about thirty thousand miles off the life of the rear pads compared to the front. First set of Akebonos went 163,000 miles at 2.5mm remaining, but this pair of rears only made it 110,000 at 3.0mm. At least the rotors still don't show any wear.

I want to research these a little more. I see they are fiberglass but do have the original texture formed into them. It looks like they are glued in place so I would like to see some photos of these installed but at $135.00 for the entire kit, I could almost try them and see if they will work with little lost if they are junk. My OCD is jumping out at me to go OEM, just need some guidance. ;)

^ nice find!!

You can mod your existing bumper reinforcement to accept the tow hitch while you work on sourcing a replacement. That's what I had to do when I got into a little fender bender. My original reinforcement had a slight bend to it and I wasn't able to get it square enough to fit the bumper. I ended up cutting the welds from a non tow hitch reinforcement and made it fit the tow hitch.

Yep I don't plan on buying the other bar. Was gonna cut it up anyway. I just have to find a shop willing to cut some plates for me. My kit was missing the "spacers" as I guess whoever installed it didn't put them on.

I finally re-installed my passenger side fender flare last night.

The fender trim that came with my running boards didn't contain the 4.8is flares. Let me assure you the truck looks super goofy with only the rear part of the flares installed. I was able to disassemble my original, non-running board trim to remove the flare piece and reinstall, but on the passenger side the clips broke and fell out. I ended up fabricating new ones with sheet metal and a dremel then swamping the damn thing with epoxy. End result is it's locked on tight and I'm not longer missing a hip.

Now to find the lemans flairs for the front. :)

I have an app "Marquee" that I have stored messages such as "headlight out" and one time had to add one "dragging chains, sparks flying" for a tow truck that had ten feet of chain whipping everywhere. Anyhow I have a "nice car" saved message not that the guy doesn't know that but not everybody appreciates how awesome it is.

Traffic was making it difficult to get along side but when traffic cleared the Bentley took advantage of its 500-600HP and cleared some ground.

I still wanted to pull along side so I kept up with GT until I realized we were solid into triple digits. I had my left hand at twelve on the wheel and was blocking the speedo and the x5 rides so well I honestly had no idea I thought we were going 80.

We slowed down to sub-light and I finally caught up with the Bentley and the passenger saw the marquee on my phone. Appreciated my effort to catch up with to get my message that the passenger took a video of my "nice car" message.

Managed to shave 6-7 minutes off my 1 hour trip (and avoid a trip to the gray bar motel).

BMWЯ handled the Midwest autobahn trip like a CHAMP. Added bonus, turned 150,000mi on the trip about ten minutes later. My son even sang a mutant version of happy birthday to you "happy benchmark to you" as I took a video of the odometer.

Added LED front signal lights to compliment the rear LED signals. Love the way they look, and so does the wife. She demanded I immediately order her some for her X5. ;)

The ones I used can be ordered from SiriusLED on Amazon. The rears I can't link to as they were purchased years ago for our first Optima SX, then used on our second Optima SX, and now on the X5. Fronts: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1. They are switchbacks, but the white portion of the LED does not get utilized on the X5 as our front sockets only utilize 2 contacts and the LCM does the switching between parking and signal +12v (I'm guessing anyway). Just as well. With as bright as the LED rings are for the halos, I don't think it would look very good having the parking lights be white.

Here are a couple of vids:

Crystalworks did you have to add load resistors to the front LEDs to work on the front so that they would flash correctly or was it just plug & play?

No load resistors were required for the front. They were on the rear though (at least for the bulbs I have). Just coded out voltage monitoring in Carly and all was good for the fronts.

I had the same issues with my rear lower flares and the clips. When I got my bumper, one side was off and the clips were gone. The other side had only 3 of 6 holding it on. Dealer couldn't figure out what I needed. I went back today and we found the mounting kit for the lower flares. 6 metal clips and one expanding rivet per side. The used lower flares looked like the PO had run over paint and it got on the inside surface of the flare so I took some cleaner and started to clean it and found that they are fricking painted plastic. The black came off and they are primer gray underneath. I knew I wasn't going to be able to match the color and texture of the upper flares that are new so ordered new lowers too. This 4.8 rear bumper conversion is quickly approaching $2K.

Let me know what you find on the front Le Mans flares. I am in the same situation...

Vacuumed red sand (from baseball field) from under subwoofer area. Previous owner at time of purchase had apologized for his kids leaving his dirty gear in the trunk but I guess he was unaware it amounted to this much. Check out the video

Finally finished the front suspension refresh. Meyle lower control arms and Meyle HD sway bar end links went in. Not sure if it's necessary but I am going to take it in for an alignment tomorrow anyway. Have lifetime alignment with Firestone anyway. We'll see what they come up with.

@crystalworks: please update with alignment findings. We replaced some links and were told alignment wasn't needed. Wife wore through two steel belts on both front tires before I noticed. I would always align after replacing any link that could affect alignment.

I need to replace the links for the anti-sway bar (genius design other than the plastic ball joint they clunk like hell once worn).

I also need to replace the thrust bushing which although allow the front wheels to move over half an inch while braking some how that is not causing any tire wear so possibly does not affect alignment which blows my mind.

I will get alignment looked at after installing.

Will do, I'll let you know what the results are.

On your thrust bushings... I used Meyle HD versions with good results. Also replaced the thrust arm ball joints with Lemoerders at the same time. That was a fun job, let me tell you. My ball joints were frozen in the knuckle BAD.

Is that a" M Performance" decal on the X5? How long have you had it on the X5

X53Jay4.8is 05-25-2017 06:59 PM

Today was rear window regulator change. Replaced the glass mounting clip also. It was almost done, brittle and falling apart. My old regulator cables jumped track.

I remember that. Ever replace the handle? Use Fiberglas.

I wish I could find a replacement handle. I've looked in a couple tool places and haven't found one.

I'll try Ebay.

Haha Mike! My BFH of is fiberglass handled and I'm not sure what it would take to break. It's taken a beating... and delivered quite a few beatings as well. :D It's definitely the best persuasion tool I've ever purchased. I don't even remember where I got it, but it has performed some serious work. Both on the car and the house. I used it to drive an 18" spike into concrete to break up a walkway I poured when we first bought the house. It didn't even break a sweat... though I sure as hell did.

Here's my "pickle fork of power" and my BFH after beating my rear driveshaft into submission. That mofo was frozen on the output pin of the transfer case. After all the beating the centering sleeve still stayed on the output pin and had to be pulled of with a 3 jaw. On reassembly everything got a liberal coating of copper grease I assure you! :bustingup
