Well with a shorter commute, it's taking a little more time to make the numbers change, but I plunged through the 375000 mile barrier last Sunday! :D Everything still works - including that pesky SES light :(
Transmission still shifts fine on the original fluid, but there's a teltale whine in reverse when it's cold. Biggest issue is cracked leather on the driver's seat and my 800 mile per quart oil leakage. But it's still cheaper than a new one :dunno:



2002 X5 3.0 375,300 miles
2014 428i 66,200 miles


2004 325i sold at 123,600 miles
2001 325i sold at 66,000 miles

It's a good idea to replace the tranny fluid, if it hasn't been done. It's not lifetime with that many miles on it. Is your oil housing gasket leaking? Have you replace the ccv on it?

Changing fluid now would create an environmental disaster inside that transmission. I'm sure that after 375,000 miles the fluid, friction surfaces and seals are in a totally symbiotic relationship at the nano particle level! The engine oil leaks are from the pan gasket and rear main.

OMG, I can't believe the mileage achieved by some. My e53 is at 127k miles now, a spring chicken compared to these!

Same. But it seems most of the high milers are in a 3.0 m54. Makes sense as the v8's always have some Achilles heel(s) that 3rd,4th, and 5th owners don't want to pay to fix. Chain guides, xover pipes, trans issues, valve seals, etc. My n62 is getting ready to hit 123456 miles on its next drive... Whenever that might be.

I think I would still do it. But I'm no expert on that.
I can see not changing the oil pan gasket, that would be a pain to do on these X5's.

Srmmmm, you have the gm box in that? Or zf? If gm I wouldn't touch. If zf if do pan, 4 tube seals, bridge seal, and mech sleeve. Made a difference to the zf box in our e61 @ 182000 miles.

It's the GM five speed. Best GM product I've ever had :bustingupand it's in a BMW! Go figure.....

You don't know the full details: @srmmmm changes a little fluid every time he cleans/replaces the filter which I believe is about 50-60,000 miles or twice a year or so [emoji16]

When putting back together he puts back the original fluid and tops off with fresh fluid introducing some new fluid but as he said his trans innards are happy with exactly what they have and a drastic change can easily rip apart a transmission, I see at least one post a year where somebody does a full change and the trans falls apart immediately afterwards.

Re: pan gasket; both my and wife's x are leaking too much oil but I haven't climbed under and figured out exactky the source yet, but if pan gasket I'll likely take the cut the gasket to install without removing the CV axles although my car needs at least one outer joint so I may just bite the bullet and pull the whole CV to do that job if I have to change the pan gasket anyhow.

When I bought mine 5 years ago with 128,000 miles, it was the cleanest engine ive ever seen on a used car. It's depressing how much it leaks now so I have to fix it.

I bought mine about 8 yrs ago with around 190000km, now has around 254000km. 1st year I had it ,the engine hydro locked from the ccv being frozen ( at least it was idling when it happened, seen a tonne of smoke and shit the engine of right away, but there was alot of oil on top of the pistons and through the exhaust. Running perfect since with no enginenisuues . I put about 50000km on it since.
