Per the best Dallas BMW transmission expert that also does high performance rebuilds, I have changed transmission fluid and filter every 40-50,000 miles and used OE fluid as recommended. I have original transmission with 118,000 miles on it.

From experience I can confirm you can always change the filter and fluid on the L480-E at 180,000 miles. I think one of our members is still on original fluid and filter pushing 381,000 miles with no issues.
