How can you tell if your struts are aftermarket?

The original have the BMW rounded logo!

Aftermarket will looks like this:

Odd how the aftermarket Stabilus gas shocks have unscrewable ends yet factory don't and are made by same company. What would be the purpose of the unscrewable ends I wonder?

Saw this the other day on ebay and considered buying them but was nervous. Guess i'll try them out.

I'm in. Will have to check how much stress these put on hinge mechanism. Here is hoping the rear hatch doesn't get popped open and caught on the garage door.

Now for auto close
I though TerminatorX5 was going to work on a trick. Anyone have auto close?

this is still on my list to do - I have narrowed the search down to some electric shocks, just to be disappointed in their specs - they are too slow... I have a set of busted E70 shocks, and they might be good fit, but I am still looking for a set of used working ones for a reasonable price, as getting them from a dealer is not really an option, as they are not returnable...

the quest is still on...

I realized recently that I need new hatch struts (ouch! head!). :( I ordered the struts and the springs just this AM. It looks like shipping may take some time, but I'll come back to the thread when all is installed.

Don't hit the hatch button accidently while driving around town...

Since you have the same high standards of quality as I do Prop I will be tuned in to see how you like them.

Electric shocks install? Sounds like a fair bit of work

 I've been driving (3) E53's for over 14 years and never not once have I ever accidentally hit the hatch button. I'd like to hear exactly *how* they did this from someone who has.

Miss the DSC button or have kids... It hasn't happened to me, and is probably not memorable for anyone else in stock form.

A linear actuator would be a cool addition. Integrating it to open and close would not be easy to do though.
