Having said that, the seller is VERY good at communicating even if his English is not. I'd buy from him again.

I still worry about the extra stress on the soft close mechanism parts

For you owners that have installed them, did you notice any increase or decrease in the dreaded hatch rattle condition?

2002 X5 3.0 273,500 miles
2004 325i 118,000 miles

I have a 2001 with 131K miles on it, springs installed and my car has zero rattles or sounds from the rear.

:dunno: They're small. The two of them arrived in a padded pouch small enough that I did not notice it for a week or two.

If I were more curious, I'd measure the exposed section of the hatch and eyeball the spring pictured against it. I'm going to guess that we're at about 5" of length.

Not that length matters. ;)

I have not had that issue in either the '01 3.0, the '04 3.0, or the '04 4.8is.

I've only used the springs in the 4.8is

Sounds like I need some springs in my life...

I would really like to thank Propellerhead for posting the results of his natural curiosity.

I had put my springs away as a 'to do later' project, after reading about the need for new aftermarket struts.
But after seeing this update, i got curious too. And low and behold, i could actually unscrew the plastic end of both of my original 2004 struts with my bare hands.

I added a pair of tight fitting rubber washers in both ends of the springs, to eliminate that 'springy' sound it makes when they otherwise would slide up and down the strut.

After having remote-popped my hatch around 50 times with a huge grin on my face, i can say that it works flawlessly. -Even with my 11 year old struts. :D
