If I'm not mistaken the separate support plate on manual version has a thru hole in that location for the extra coolant connector on radiator (where as the automatic version has a coolant passage. If that support is not modded it will prevent any plug on the outside of the coolant connector. So internal thread and plug with o-ring (like on the bleed nipples) would be the best solution.

I was just meaning that it seems 100% ready solution is not available and you have to fabricate the plug by yourself.

If that connector would be suitable for quick connector (or similar blind plug) that size range looks like the one with outer diameter 22,0 mm and on that size the distance from the end surface to locking pin groove centre line should be 20 mm. So that connector neck looks a bit too long. (The next smaller size would be 12,0 mm outer diameter.)

The manual plate has the hole. And that hole has an o-ring groove, which is weird. It's almost like they cadded everything up for an automatic, then just changed the necessary parts for a manual, but left anything automatic in place that doesn't matter. Otherwise, why would you have an opening for a port that you aren't going to use, then put an o-ring groove in it that you DEFINITELY aren't going to use...? Germans...

The ID is .450" and the OD is .650". That would be 16.51mm OD. I don't know why this isn't metric. I'm not complaining, though. I'll make the plug out of 1/2" aluminum. I'll be getting started in a couple hours.

So the inner diamater is a bit too large for basic bleed nipple which is M10 x 1,0 mm.

M12 (preferably fine thread) oil drain plug and suitable thread tap? Use some gasket sealant on the thread as there won't be full pitch on the plastic if the inner diameter is 11,4 mm. Use o ring or fabric/rubber washer on the face. If you use o ring (12 x 2 mm) use ~15 mm drill on the plastic end to make the grooved/angled space for o ring to seal against.

It looked like the manual plate is just missing half the shell to complete the passages that the automatic one would use so likely not a different part but only 1/2.

Yes, the base looks exactly the same. Only missing the top part with the actual coolant passages. That's why it's so weird that it fits but there is no purpose for some parts of it.

Ah I didn’t know the ATF cooler was external. Nevermind.

Fortunately these are not Mercs with the self destroying cooling system where the combined radiator fails and leaks coolant in the auto gearbox oil before anyone knows it.
