Update.

Just received a call from BMWNA. They are going to cover the cost of the parts as long as I cover the labor.

Nice touch on BMW's part.

As it is their responsibility in the first place for such a poorly designed and manufactured component they really should be changing these for free. Still, given there poor response to other similarly poor designed and manufactured parts (Window regulators, water pumps to name but two.) I guess we should be giving them a big "Whoopee" for doing anything at all.

Could you let me know who you spoke with at BMW NA? I submitted my information last month and received a call from a lady named Zima (sp?) and she told me that missing pixels on the MID (radio unit) were not considered a safety hazard so they wouldn't replace it.

Any suggestions from anyone who has successfully gotten BMW to replace the MID? Should I resubmit my information?

Dead Pixels on MID

I overnighted my instrument cluster to VDORepair today. I will post result. Removal required a #10 torx wrench and about 7 minutes. Removal was as simple as could be. Galls me to think that BMW wanted $1000 to replace it. For less than half that I should get a better rebuilt returned to me. (Assuming VDORepair works as advertised).

Just had the work completed by the dealer. Labor cost me $127 and BMWNA picked up the cost of the part (67,500 miles on car). Now I can see what the temperature is again!

Thanks to those who posted the solution to this problem on the boards. It worked for me!

I should have waited a week and read the thread before sending to VDORepair. BMWNA took my information when I called them. 2 biz days later I received a call "We will replace the part, you pay for the labor". No questions asked. Now...since I've had it repaired it is worth getting a new one installed? I've $400+ into it now. BTW, VDORepair was great to work with. Mine's got 97K on it, again, no questions asked. The part's defective and they know it!

Thank you for this thread - my 2001 X5 goes in this afternoon to have my instrument pixel display replaced - Robert Murphy of BMWNA has told me BMWNA is picking up the cost of parts and I only have to pay for the labor - sweet deal, as I was going to replace it either way - I still have some minor age issues as the door locks sometimes stick, as does the radio on/off button, and the memory modules sometimes rearrange the side mirror settings - but I've go this baby to almost new - I hate to think I may sell it
