It is basically the same for the engine oil: they have an approved list, and I am using one of the oils on that list. The Mobile 1 is a real synthetic oil, while the BMW oil is not. If I can use a better oil for the same or less money, why wouldn't I?

What oil does BMW recommend for the x-drive transfer case?
John, I just came back from stealer, they don't have any special BMW Dexron III other than Castrol, they said the Castrol Dexron III is what they use for Power steering and transfer case. will the transfer case oil (#83 220 397 244) for X-drive fit our 02 X5?

boqibama - your car doesn't use bmw's transfer case oil, that is for x-drive systems only.

dchen8 - good info, though keep in mind that numerous manufacturers have products that will 'meet the spec' (however ambiguous that statement really it). Personally I wouldn't chance it with something that 'should work' rather than using something that 'does work'. Especially when it involves something that gets changed so infrequently and the price difference will come to +/- $50 on an $80,000 car.

I've also just called the parts counter at my local Daniels BMW dealership and they said that Texaco fluid has been superceded by the DEX VI because Texaco no longer makes the fluid. I plan on doing a drain and fill and filter change soon with the Valvoline DEX VI.

Not sure why you bothered. I did the work for you. Read post #42. My point in post #52 was that I'd still go with BMW spec product given the choice.

Hello:

I would like to find out if you have a compabatible type of ATF for
BMW vehicles. Specifically for these two types of ATF:
1. Texaco ETL 7045E
2. Texaco ETL 8072B
BMW no longer requires or reccommends 8072B for X5s with the GM A5S390R transmission; both BMW and GM reccommend Dexron VI.

FWIW, I decided to use Redline D4ATF instead of Dexron VI because there are so few people that have tried Dexron VI in the A5S390R, while there are plenty of people that have had good results with D4ATF in it.

What this means is that it is not a certified Dexron VI product. If you want to go with Valvoline and a Dexron VI, I would use their full synthetic Dexron VI.

My understanding is that BMW reccommends Dexron III for the pre-x-drive transfer case. I went with Redline D4ATF: http://www.xoutpost.com/x5-e53-forum/...que-specs.html

Good advice. Though I'd still buy the BMW stuff unless I had no other choice. The difference would come to around $75 total.

X5 Meister - no hard feelings. I've read through the thread and did see your post. I'm just cautious with what I read on the forums in general. This place is a great help but I still like to confirm what i've read with the dealer. But as we all know - sometimes their info isn't standard either. But thanks for taking the time to post and reply.

I will be going with the Valvoline DEX VI. I've ordered the original BMW filter and Transfer Case Fluid (xDrive, '06) from ECS Tuning. I should get it before the weekend and hopefully will get a chance to do the tranny, diff and xfer case. The DEX VI is the full synthetic one. Diff fluid is the Valvoline Synpower 75w-90 full synthetic as well. I have no idea what the xfer case fluid is but it must be part gold to charge 47.xx/quart.

Good luck. As far as the transfer case fluid goes, no one knows for sure what it is and apparently there is no substitute for it yet.
