I would venture to say that seeing as the electrochromo's are a fair bit more to replace than the standard mirror (blue tinted glass) that your truck came with the electro's.

IMO the electro chromatic ones are a nice option to have if you do alot of night driving.

As for the heating, its controlled via one of the dozen modules on the truck based on exterior temperature automatically. It's a completely automatic system; no need to turn the heating on/off manually like the old school mirror defrost!

Jesus thats a fat bastard! The rover is a bit more "old man" (softer, more plush ride) where as the X5M would be a bit too pure performance oriented for round here....BOTH are absolutely gorgeous rides though! Not too sure about the torque curve on the X5M motor, the Rover puts out it's peak at something like 2500 rpm.....comes out of the hole at like warp 10! lol

According to them, X5M puts out its peak torque at 1500rpm
Either one of them is one heck of a vehicle to own. Nothing but love for either one.

Congrats and enjoy. Very sharp. Almost got one instead of the X5 way back in the day.

Edit: the power is fun eh?

I would venture to say that you got the Autodim/electrochromatic mirrors stock, since the passenger side looks very aftermarket (replaced before probably), the blue is quite a bit more "blue" than OE mirrors. But i wouldnt know for sure unless you pulled one off.

To get the mirror off, be very careful and research well how to take it out. It has to be pried vertically, as the mirror glass base sits down into "slots" on the base of the mirror itself.

If you pry it outwards before you get it free from the "slots" you will break the circular mounting piece, and to replace it you have to buy a "mirror repair kit" from BMW that costs upwards of $100 bucks.

I was lucky I only broke one, but definitely not a job I'd like to do again.

FWIW, this is the exact seller I bought my mirrors from back in December 2011, 60 bucks for the pair!

Heated Door Mirror Glass and Backing Plate Pair 2000 2006 BMW x5 E53 | eBay

This is the pair of Auto-dim mirrors, about $220 from our friends in Romania/Latvia:

BMW x5 Series E53 Mirror Glass Auto Dim Heated RH LH Right Left | eBay

If you look closely at pictures of the backing plate you'll see the half circle looking "slots that the protrusions on the mirror base fit into, and you'll see both mirrors have the 2-wire connection for the heaters (which turns on automatically as needed), and both sets i showed you have aspherical (blind spot) functions.

Hope that helps!

Thats just bonkers! [Enter Jeremy Clarksons comment about torque and restarting and/or spinning planets in reverse!]

Im amused rather easily, so I'd be happy just sitting in the driveway pushing the start/stop button and listening to the rumble.... but yeah, the power is pretty intoxicating. I've been driving for over 10 years and have yet to get so much as a speeding ticket; whether or not my luck will hold with this new beast my magic 8-ball currently says "Cannot predict now"....poop.

Did a service call to my DW in distress-the X5 wouldn't start could I come and boost the GDXX%%?? thing, the yellow light on the dash is on, and I can't leave the car cause the GD??XX key won't come out of the igniton. Cranked up the diesel, found the booster cables, and attended the very warm scene. I ,being the genius I am, put the car into Park and it started. Of course it wasn't her fault, someone must have broke in and shifted the thing. Her some 40 years experience driving just didn't prepare her for this one. I just agreed and left.

ok, so based on the link above and the pic in that link...if my vehicle is equipped from the factory with the mono-chromo-uber mirrors (lol) then when I pulled the passenger mirror off, I'll see the two wires for the heater and then I'll also see the white plug for the mono thingie? If I pull it off and dont see it then I can assume I had just heated mirrors and that the driver side one was the one replaced and it happened to be from a junkyard car with the monochrome mirrors...

thats the reasoning I have at this point. lol.

Wish I could say that! The Henessey Venom Viper with Nitrous and ZR1 in "arrest me red" will vaporize a DL. Been lucky in the X, 3.5 yrs and over 70k miles ticket free. The Solo S2 has saved me from several.
