If you knew what you know now, Will you buy a X5..!?!?

I'm undecided on this issue. Traded in a 2005 X3 2.5 for a 2006 X5 4.4 with 32k kms in it and it was bulletproof for the first year or so. Now the air suspension is killing me... after changing both front struts ($3k aprox) in a couple of months, a "suspension inactive" message wont go away. It has been in the dealer twice (about 13 days combined) and its going back on monday. They have reset the entire sistem several times and the message goes away for a few days and then its "sits" on some tire. Even though it's a real dream to drive and I cant imagine going after a Pilot or something, i'm getting frustrated with this issue. I guess my only regret was getting the model with the air suspension. Should've kept the X3 for a year or so and then upgraded to an E70 with the 3.0 diesel engine.

day 34 in the shop still............ This makes over 4 months in a BMW dealer for repairs.

I love the x5.

However so far on mine i needed a new power steering pump, new alternator, door handle carrier, i also could use some new window motors but it will do for now.

I Love my 2002 X5 4.4i w/95,000 miles on it. I do my own maintenance. I would do it again in a heartbeat!

Never would I step near another X5. It hasn't been as unreliable as many on this board but I still do not like the driving dynamics of the X5.

really..? not even the 4.8is? what would you get instead?

2001 3.0i 95000 mi....me and my wife love it. I feel sorry for all bmw owners whos cars are in shops ...i think u have to learn how to be a diy guy unless its under warranty then of course u will take it the shop. but all together i would buy one maybe newer one with 7 seats.

Interesting considering your experiences tossing it about on closed course. Care to elaborate sir? Just curious.

If I needed a truck, I would get a real truck like a Tahoe. If I went Japanese, it would be a 4Runner or one of the Nismo model Pathfinders or Xterras.

My experience with other vehicles is very limited but I have done quite a few teen driving schools. I spent 2 days tossing around a E90 335d and marginally experienced what a real car should feel like; I'm hoping the E90 still has some of the feeling the older E30's and E36's had.

Driving the X5 is much more numbing than driving that E90 or even my father's E46 with worn out bushings and lots of slop; the X5 is midway between a truck and a car and I'm just not happy with that. If I wanted a car, I would get a car and get the whole feeling. If I wanted a truck, I expect it to drive like a truck and be underwhelmed with all the driving dynamics. The X5 doesn't tackle rough terrain like a truck and it doesn't perform like a car; its a jack-of-all-trades and master of none.

i think you, sir, should get a cayenne then. it has more offroad prowess and on road handling
