Sold my 2004 4.8iS last week, it was on just over 112k miles.
Took quite a hit on what I was able to sell it for compared to what I paid 18 months ago, partly due to the previous owner lying about 2 faults.
I can't say I'll miss it, I don't think BMW's are for me. Perhaps I'm being unfair, it was the 1st Beemer I've owned in the 20+ cars I've had, and can't see me wanting another.
That probably sounds quite salty , maybe I'm just less patient these days.
Hopefully my Panda 100hp, which is quite the contrast to a V8 X5, will give me less grief

Totally fair. If the 1st Bimmer I owned was a 20yr old E53, I would have sailed away immediately. Might I suggest the inline 6 wrapped around an E46 or as you are in UK, you have TONS of 1 series options. My daughter's 128 has been great for 4 years.

In fairness, you did pick one of the least reliable BMWs ever made (among a long list of extremely unreliable options) as your first BMW

Can you imagine if it were a '91 850ci? Or hell, ANY V12.

I did my homework. It's why I avoided any V8 model. So far, the M54 has been rock steady! It's all the other stuff that eats my wallet.

choose wisely, or at least try something new/different

My first, only, and most probably my last Bimmer (or any other personal car) was a nearly 20yr old E53, when I swapped for it in 5/2021 (it's b'day is 7/2001). When I gave the neighbor my preferences for an AWD, or 4WD to swap for, in '17 (he was to buy and prepare/repair it to swap for my '66 Chevelle drag race car), I specified
  • 1) a '01-03 BMW X5 E53 with the M54,
  • 2) a '98-01 Jeep XJ 4WD w/straight 6 cylinder,
  • 3) a '99-04 Jeep WJ 4WD, also w/straight 6, or
  • 4) a '96-04 Chevrolet Blazer 4-Door 4WD, 4.3l V-6

Actually there were 10 models on my list, but when he found some to look at/into, and to describe them to me, the X5 moved to the top (though I saw the S-10 as a sentimental favorite, after owning a 2wd S-10 extended cab pickup for almost 20 years). It took him over 3.5 years to get it to a tradeable condition (nearly all systems rebuilt).

No regrets, so far, but I always wanted a BMW, loved the first-gen E53 styling from day-one, and never had an SUV (SAV) or AWD/4WD before, so it ticked-off a few boxes on my wish list, at one time. I've had just about every car, truck, engine, etc. that I'd wanted, previously, so why not an old E53?

That's funny workingonit, when we decided to buy a camper trailer in 2016 we first bought a 2001 Grand Cherokee to tow with it. I think I paid around $4k for it, which was a great deal since it was in good shape even though it was old.

Six days after we bought it I got rear-ended by an octogenarian in a Cadillac. It bent the frame of the Jeep so the guy's insurance gave us $6300 which is exactly what we paid for this X5. This BMW had half the miles and was a way nicer car than the WJ. I think we lucked out.
