I've only owned it since 10/2011.

Yes 4.4. I'm not sure if the transmission or motor are original but the transfer case had some work done. I can confirm that from the threadlockless bolts that loosened over time. One bolt fell off onto the front plate and caused the front of the driveshaft to hit the case of the drivetrain.

If I were to guess the motor hasn't had any work done but the transmission probably was rebuilt.

175k miles..

The engine parts are almost completely replaced. 3rd transmission just rebuilt. Front suspension parts replaced. 3rd set of Cat converters.

I am not going to deny I drove my X5 pretty rough the first 5 years (including off road driving), but its being babied now because I had several rentals/zipcars during rebuilding process and NO car matches its driving qualities..

Since almost everything is brand new, I am hoping to keep driving it for a while. If I have to upgrade, I would go for a newer 03-04 4.4 or the new X3..

Ozzie..

My 2004 4.4i Is now at 183,250 miles.

Only Major repairs are alternator and water pump. The rest has been routine.

Just had the fluids changed in the transmission, TransferCase and engine oil.

My X5 has had normal maintenance work done since the day I drove it away from the performance delivery center in South Carolina. It has been great. Aside from the minimal maintenance that BMW actually did for it during the first 50k miles. To date at 152,000+ miles I have done the following maintenance:
BMW Schedule Maintenance (oil and whatever, nothing major) 0-50k miles

Front brake pads and rotors at 50k (BMW warranty)

Rear Pads at 101K miles

Tires at 50k and 130k and 180k miles

Right Left Lower Control Arm Bushings 132k miles

Transmission Service and 100k service at 132k miles

Left front out CV boot replace 136k miles

Power Steering hose replace 136k miles

Lower radiator hose replace 136k miles

Upgrade to performance Cross Drilled Rotors and Ceramic Pads 150k miles

Recall, "Recall to have the programming updated to the vehicles DME (Engine Control Unit) & EGS (Transmission Control Unit)" - Whatever that was, made things worse for about three or four days when tight cornering in parking lots. Mysteriously then all was fine. Mechanic thought it might be the transfer case going bad. But, symptoms went away as fast it they appeared.

Alternator at 160k Miles
Water Pump at 175k Miles

Transmission Service, transfer Case Fluid Changes at 182k Miles

I have a 2002 X5 3.0i w/170k! We are 2nd owner and bought it w/70k back in 2007. We had water pump, front cv shafts, valve cover gasket, computer repl for a/c vent controls (it was drawing down the batt), sway bar link, air controller, intake boot, alternator, license plate light bezel. Tires, brakes, etc goes w/o saying. Getting ready to change o2 sensor bank 1 post cat and oil filter housing gasket/o-ring. Also the pixels are mostly out on the radio. Original trans still good! We tow with it too! Usually about 800 lbs.

Going strong

I have a 2004 X-5 that gets driven hard in the hot Sacramento summers...I keep regular maintenance on it and use 91 grade gas ALWAYS. Other than the regular maintenance I have had NO issues. It is using a bit more oil now than when new (I am the original owner) but I still have NO COMPLAINTS!!!!

Talking

My wife has a 2002 X5 3.0 - Just touch 191K. New set of tires early this year. New belts and pullys. Changed the Power steering res this pass weekend. Next on the list - Bushings and transmission service. Told her I may trade it in - she gave me a dirty look....LOL. We will see once she hit over 200K. Most work I do myself.
