Seems some purchasers "shoot themselves in the foot" when they buy the lowest priced vehicle on the market.

I will gladly pay a fair price for a documented/maintained vehicle. Fewer woes in the ownership.

As Oscar Wilde wrote over a century ago, "A cynic is a man who knows the price of everything but the value of nothing".

I thought that was the case when I bought my X. Carfax showed full maintenance and repair history at a BMW dealership and it was a west-coast (California) vehicle with relatively low miles.

The shop who did my PPI didn't find any big issues, thought they did say it was priced a few thousand too high. And during negotiation, I was in a hurry so the used car lot made out better than I did.

$7-8000 worth of repairs later (at a reasonably priced indy, no less), I'm sure glad I plunked down an extra $5k for the warranty.

Here's my thing. My X5 is by far the one BMW that seems to have more things that needs attention then any other BMW that I have owned:but, I love my 4.6is X5 that I am willing to go the distance to make it right and enjoy the outcome. I don't get discouraged once it needs something else I just address it. I have an E39M5, Euro 635csi, 540it and the 4.6is X5. I love them all but the X5 requries more attention. And I am not complaining

By the basic questions asked there are many that come to the forum that don't have much to contribute. I give them credit for coming here for help rather than grabbing some coat hanger wire and duct tape to keep it going.

Frankly, I think some are driven away because we scare them with anecdotal experience that we present as if it happens to every X5 out there. I don't have a clue why anyone would spend time here if their intention is other than to help X5 owners but it seems that is the case all to frequently. Hi, welcome, that being said now it's time for me to scare the crap out of you for purchasing a used X5.

The coat hanger repair guys just kill me. "So you purchased a BMW but you think the repairs are expensive? What were you thinking that hi end cars are cheap to own and drive?"

BMW owners are not singled out on this thinking. Years ago when Mercedes introduce the 190E, there were a ton of base models running around the Wash DC area with a coat hanger for an antenna, as the dealers wanted $250 for the parts and another $275 labor to pull the inner qtr panel liner for access necessry to replace the plastic gear drive motor of the power antennas. Car was cheapest Mercedes to purchase, but standard Mercedes ownership costs on the repair side.

Your right as always. This forum is designed to provide assistance and to share joint knowledge on the ownership of X5 E53. Common issues, common maintenance, normal ownership challenge solutions should be found here. The "wait until XX explodes, falls off, etc" needs to be toned down a few points. It is kind of like kicking sand into someone's new toy.

Personal Motto: Keep everything you own super clean. Keeping up a super clean car is like a religion, needs to be practiced frequently with devotion. Repair and replace parts as needed so everything works as designed. That way to the uniformed, it looks "new". In their world of casual ownership, new is the only time the vehicle is clean and does not have a universal wire hanger on XXX part.

I am a newbie with only 3 years of ownership and maybe 15K driving experience on this X5. As mentioned in another posting, she sits covered up waiting for a run to somewhere. Drove 100 miles over the weekend, gave her a bath and recovered her. Need to do the annual oil change this month, as I think I drove 5K this year!

Now I will get off my soap box. Or in 20 something speak, I will shut up now.

I'm still new to this group, but mine just rolled over 142K this past week, and I'm about to head out on an almost 2K mile trip from Idaho to Denver and back through SLC for Thanksgiving.

Although, I did recently get a new transmission so maybe that's kind of cheating?

Also, I'm hoping to diagnose my drivers side heated seat this trip with my family. It takes about 15 minutes before it kicks in, the passenger one works immediately.

Yeah it's an old BMW, yes they can be expensive, but what's the fun of having an appliance with no soul?

Yeah, this forum has members that post a lot.

At least the posters here are adding content. Around 10 yrs ago, E46Fan forum had an outbreak of members posting a "k" (I guess it means OK) to every thread, just to boost their post #.
