You know "TheBlue", I have been sitting here reading your entire post, and I have to say, I am thoroughly impressed and entertained! Why? Because I remember the days that I did this, back in the 1980's and 90's, fixing 2002's and 320i's and 535i's. I now tinker with my e70 X5 4.8i, but there just isn't enough wrong with it yet ...

So hats off to you! I think you have a great attitude towards this project. Keep up the great work, but above all, keep us posted with your progress.

I have a suggestion: I like to propose that members on this forum start offering free, or drastically reduced parts for your project. Give us a list of the things you you are looking for. We might be surprised by how our readers want to help.

Since I am the one suggesting this, I want to set an example by offering you two (2) OEM style 87 (replicas), size 9.5 x 20, FREE! (sorry, I don't have 4). I currently have them listed for sale on this forum, but will donate them to your project. PM me to make arrangements. Here's a pic of the two wheels I am offering. In the mean time, keep up the great work!

wow, thanks and that's a very generous offer.

I'm still working out the plan and make sure I'm not spending on cosmetics before I know the fundamentals are good.

please keep trying to sell your wheels and if they still happen to be around when I'm ready I might just have to take you up on that offer.

You're welcome!

With a little help from your friends, you'll have lots left over to spend on cosmetics ... Now, what about that list???

I'm waiting to get the X back from the mechanic (any day now) and then I'm going to see how it drives and based on that prioritize my list of item.

I have a camping trip in PA next weekend so I can't wait to load this thing up and head out.

The shudder under braking is likely front lower control arm. I just did that after having the same problem. It's a rubber mount on the body side and a ball joint that faces up on the other. It's either that or the front torsion arm, which is similar. Big rubber mount and a ball joint. Easy to do with an air impact and a big ball joint popper.

The front window track thing isn't terribly hard either. There are threads here to pull the door panel off. It's like 3 or 4 torx screws and some plastic clips.

Once you get that off the glass is bolted to the carrier with two screws that go into plastic retainers that usually break. The retainers are like $.50 each, but you have to take everything apart to change them. Usually when those break, you can get the window down, but not back up. I think I have an extra one if you find out the black plastic clip is the problem.

It's number 7 in this diagram; "clip":

thanks,
window already fixed (exactly what you said)
will know how the front suspension is once I get it back, I still think it's the thrust arm bushing that was shot but on the hub side.
