Took the valve covers off today and the passenger side front cover.

Finally getting back to this project. I need to get rocking on this as I will be spending a lot of time in Europe during the next year. I want to have this ready for my daughter to drive when she gets her license in the next month or two. I picked up a really sweet set of 87s for it.

Next is the removal of the driver's side front cover and the center cover. The timing chains actually look tight and so hopefully only new guides will be needed.

The engine is a mess of oil and dirt on the front and this is not really fun but it is coming along. Once I get the covers off I plan to remove the bottom pan and the intermediate pan. I guess many a wrench to be turned.... :-)

Finally at the point where I can see the parts that need changing. The motor is pretty clean inside and I think it is a matter of refreshing the guides, the Vanos and new seals.

For some reason my pics come out sideways....

How do the half shafts come out? Next is to get them out and remove the diff so I can get to the pans next. Just noticed a thread of somebody doing this on a 4.8.... I wonder if the diff can stay in place, somehow doubt it...

Never remove any part you don't have to remove to complete the work. Increases the risk of making a mistake, damaging a good part, breaking a bolt off, something leaking etc--- all that bad stuff that can happen anyway.

The inboard ends of the axles have heavy wire clips on them, and hold the axles into the diff very well. It takes a good amount of prying to pull the axles out of the diff. There are special tools that cup the CVs that might make it easier. I used a big pry bar or maybe two - it was a while ago.

Diff is off the oil pan

A few weeks ago I brought back a slide hammer from stuff left over in my dad's basement. After oiling it up is still very serviceable and I decided today to have a go at the half shafts. For some reason I started on the passenger side. I bought a 3 1/4" exhaust clamp and attached it to the inner CV coupling. After about five hits the shaft popped out.
The driver's side, not so much! I worked on it for 20 minutes without any luck and then decided to see if the diff would come off the oil pan anyway, which it did. Now I could see the end of short shaft by looking through the diff. However, there is a cylindrical piece in the way, so using a piece of pipe is not an option. I used a hefty flat blade screwdriver and a 10lb hammer. After 3 hits the shaft popped out.
Now I am ready to drop the lower oil pan cover and the intermediate pan and then finally I can start ordering parts.

Sump is off!

Finally the sump is off. A bit tricky since it is a dolly and I can't see underneath but it beats working on it while it is in the car and lying on your back! :-) It took a few minutes to gently persuade the "flywheel" off but not too bad. The oil-pump chain is in good condition but a posting by David X5 revealed that exchanging the pump maybe part of curing the start-up rattle.
Tonight I hope to find a few minutes to take the RMS off and the coolant cover.

QUESTION: I was thinking that the reassembly is reverse order?

As far as I can see this, I need the sump back on and the flywheel in place to keep the crankshaft at TDC with the pin. Once the sump is back on, I can start work on the timing chain guides and the Vanos. Any reason I should consider a different order?

Rear covers and intermediate sump are back on. I mounted the flywheel provisionally (need new bolts). So now I could lock the crankshaft and after setting the cam blocks I removed the bolts from the front of the camshafts and the chain guides. Tomorrow the distribution pieces will come off to change the rectangrings. I have to install the Beisan kits and then reassemble.....
I have a couple of hours a day for the next four weeks to work on this and hope to be closing in on having the e53 operational by Thanksgiving. (fingers crossed)

Hard F-ing core man, kudos! My E53 continues to soak the driveway, but remains a reliable beast, towing my project car to the body shop last week.

Beisan kits are in the Vanos

The kit is in but compressing the seals with the kit is heavy duty. I have a serious 3/4" breaker bar 24" long which I used for the Jesus Bolt on the front, happens to be same size as well @27mm. Nevertheless, it was a major effort to turn the press, absolutely need a major vice and work bench.. Should have just used my shop press but then it is hard to judge how much to press. This makes the difficulty of the job a 7 out of 10 in my book.

The other issue which the Beisan instructions don't mention is that it is easy to drop the teflon rings behind the O-rings rather than on top. I thought I had them in, only to figure out they were nowhere near where they belong and had to fish them out again..... Second attempt while working in bright sunlight succeeded.

I realized that I had not gotten new check valves and those are on order along with a large pile of other stuff. I got some items from FCP Euro, my first time buying from them.... Finally I also shipped my ABS module to Florida to be fixed, I am hoping it will come back at the end of next week.

If the replacement bolts (9+4) for the flywheel and the two motor mounts show up tomorrow I will rejoin the transmission to the motor and hope to set it back on to the sub-frame over the weekend.

It may look hard-core but it is way simpler than the refurb of the trans many moons ago now.... :-)

Progress

The motor is timed, the kit I purchased is quite complete and setting the timing is straight forward enough (after watching the U-tube vids a couple of times....).

I am now starting to reassemble stuff. Cleaned up the sub-frame this morning and installed new motor mounts. Removed the lower control arms and ordered new ones as well as new stab end links.

Replaced the flywheel bolts and torqued them. Re-installed the oil pan cover and attached the passenger side axle guide piece. Cleaning up the lower timing cover was no fun but it is done and installed the new front main seal is as well.

I am thinking to install the front diff next and fill it with gear oil, then set the motor on the sub-frame after which the trans can be bolted to the engine. Then it will be time to take the timing kit off and get the the three timing covers back on and the valve covers. Still would need to complete the front of the engine. Monday is shot with logistics for the kids but Tuesday and Wednesday should be a good five - six hours of progress and by the end of the week I should be ready to roll the whole thing back in to the chassis :-)
