I ordered an OBD code reader and will post the code when I get it. There are not any Autozones where I live. I called NAPA but they said they could not do it.

Why not take it to the dealer?

1. Time

2. Avoiding the 'moron factor'

3. Being able to bring it in and say "this is the problem, fix it, fix it this way, do not screw it up, do not wash it, do not detail it, do not drive it on any public road"

My SA just loves me.....

An OBD reader is pretty cheap, well the one that I bought is. I will probably use it again and I do not want to waste my time going to the dealer (which would take about 2 hours since its not close to my house). If the fault codes are no big deal then I will not worry about it.

And that is the bottom line. BMW and their dealers have no freakin' idea/care about how much time BMW owners waste taking their vehicles in for minor stuff like a Check Engine Light that may or may not be serious They act like providing you with a "free" loaner and a couple of lattes makes up for all the lost time/hassle.

Maybe some of the higher end BMW owners need to send them an invoice for the billable hours they lost while taking their vehicles in for warranty items.

p.s. I do it but since I'm retired the bill would be zero

I'm still waiting on my small compensation check from BMW for all of my problems. I want them to buy it back. I'm tired of wasting my time at the dealership. I purchased a new car. I thought it would mean less trips to the dealer. My 8 year old Infiniti QX4 was much more reliaable...
I only had one check engine light in 8.5 years. It was a mass air flow sensor.

I stongly agree.
Those of us working would still have pain of adjusting the work schedules according to the visits to the showroom.
Again what favour are they doing by giving "free" loaner ... infact they are taking away my time which was supposed to be spent in "MY BMW"

The last time I took mine in, they gave me a Mercury that looked like a cop car and friends of mine were laughing when they saw me driving it.
I would have had to wait longer for a BMW loaner.
