So when you are taking the assembly apart we'll know which part it actually is and which part would need to be modified for the cam. Now I see though that the $14 part is really just the lens and the base is most likely then entire locking mechanism or the base plate for both the locking mechanism and the license illuminator bringing the cost up a bit from the $14 originally mentioned.

BTW my CAM connectivity will be a bit different. I have an "older" TV tuner module that I could utilize in the E83 but space is tight and I would have to fit it below the Sirius module. This would be the most OEM method. Is this the method you are looking at? Does anyone out there have an OEM tuner plugged into their NAV unit on an E83? If so where have you mounted the tuner?

I currently have an interface under the Sirius module for the CarPC. I would have to either tie wrap the module to underneath the Sirius module or fix out a way to extend the cabling some. The existing module doesn't have provisions for an analogue cam input. So in my E83 solution would be to utilize a USB connected cam to the carpc. In the E46 I do have a TV Tuner installed and have the rear cam analogue cable unused and could use it for a rear cam.

I personally was hoping to find a decent plug and play video module that just has it's composite video in's. The oem tv module is useless as there is no analog signal anymore and as for any other type of module like the sirius i have not seen or looked at. As for mounting the tv tuner module. There is a bracket available to replace the one that holds the nav for 3 things intended for tv module navigation and bluetooth. It's on REALOEM.

I looked into the TIS for removing all the parts of the tailgate. As pictured on the realoem picture i previously posted the $75 #16 part is just the dark grey strip with 2 light housings and the door open trigger. It has one connection in the back next to the right light. So it would not be very clean to modify this, hoping also that the wires going to the right light can be disconnected and the housing easily cut out. I compared it to the TIS on an e46 and e53 they are all very similar but the part is so much harder to get to with in an x3.

Lastly to remove any of these parts and to wire the cable the trims need to be removed by removing the clips that hold them with the wedge tool. If anybody has any experience with removing the tailgate trim on the interior or exterior and has any advise on blindly unclipping the parts, please let me know.

The OEM unit is "a decent plug and play video module that just has it's composite video in's"

They are cheap, fit perfectly, so why not use one?

And the analogue TV you can always use for wireless TV cameras, like on the rear of a trailer..

I've seen the older style analogue TV tuners cheaper now on Ebay. I purchased mine for the E83 for about $75 last year (used). The only concern is the size. The bracket on OEM includes the tuner piece but doesn't include the Sirius piece. My BT module is mounted on the bottom of the compartment to the floor of it. I brought in a copy of the OEM parts picture to dealer last year and he said he couldn't find it stating that it might be available in Europe only. It is very tight right now with both the Sirius module and computer video interface. Highligted in the first picture is the USB IBUS and behind it to the right is the "old" but very small GNET video interface. I "could" just leave the video OEM module sitting on the floor of the compartment to test it....Just need a cable with aux video inputs and backup wire. (have one for the E46).

Historically I've used a "trim tool" to remove door panels. I still end up breaking a couple of the plastic tabs (this was on a GM vehicle though - never removed door trim from a BMW.

I was going to try seeing what the "view" of the camera is from below the bumper. I understand it will not be as good but after seeing what needs to be done with the license plate light frame cam mounting it might be a bit easier.

KiwiJochen -
What is the typical price for the OEM video module? My computer interface was about $200 plus Euro. Originally had a very small module (GNAV?) from Canada and the adjustment pots on it fell off. (not touching them - maybe affected by the heat?). The GNAV interface had provisions for two AUX analogue video inputs.

Typical price is what they sell for on eBay.
Search on eBay for them

OEM TV tuner sits next to radio tuner in the battery box on the X5

Just recently did a 2 day trip to FL driving the X3. (first time in about 15 years or so).

Entire MP3 collection is on the HD of the CarPC. Listened to a variety of music.

Only occasionally (for news) listened to Sirius.

Personally rarely listen to commercial radio (occasionally BBC news).

The CarPC also offers DiVx movies and GPS (alternate).

It also offers another means of connecting a rear view cam. Application I'm using has both cam and sensors features.

For those that are contemplating the camera, why don't you just buy the OEM one?

Because it's almost as complicated to fit - it replaces the whole of the handle/light strip & it costs about 10 times as much (if not more) than one of the cheapo Hong Kong/China import ones. I priced it from a seller in Germany who wanted 600 Euro's for the kit - that's about £520 UK Pounds or $800!!!
