UPDATE:

I just finished hooking up and configuring my new Airport Extreme wireless router. What I like most about this modem besides it's speed, is the fact that it has 3 antenna's, but they are all internal, so you get a nice clean look. I also set it up for shared printing so that I can print wirelessly from the laptop. We have a green light on the router, so all I need now is the computer, which will be delivered sometime today :D. I also picked up the Apple wireless laser mighty mouse yesterday.

I'll share more pics after I get the computer.

Is there any big advantage to having the Apple Airport Extreme over any regular Wi-Fi router?

I assume a regular non-Apple wi-fi router would still be compatible with the Macbook and the Apple TV?

Yes, a non Apple router will work too, just not as fast. The Apple router is also covered under the Apple Care program.

Also I believe the Apple Airport Extreme does not serve as cable modem so you would still need that part correct.

Yup, you can see my Motorola Surfboard cable modem next to the AE in my pic.

I guess I'll try my current one to see how it works, and if I desire more speed in the future I can always upgrade.

i don't think you should invest in 802.11n yet. it's still relatively new to the market, and they are very buggy
