Only one servo in my local area - Caltex, so I use that. If I go down to the big smoke I tend to look for BP or Shell. I'm not too fussy along as it a mainstream brand but I avoid the various budget servos and small independents and also avoid bio-diesel mixes.

I don't know why either, but I do! I don't drive hard. Right now its at 16.8l/100 - so its getting worse. I only have 1700km on it ..but would have expected around 12 or so by now. Might have to do that our average trip length is around 3-5km at a time - so these short runs must be killing it. The diesel proposition may only work out for us if we do longer trips - which isnt that often.

I'll ping the X6 guys to see what they are getting from the 50i based on city driving - I thinking 30l/100 might be off the mark ... I think the difference with the V8 is that driving short burst may not need much turbo to help if taking it easy - whereas the 35d twin turbo needs the turbo boost for the capacity (3.0) to pull the weight - so I reckon v8 TT might need 20 - 25l to get the job done .... I'll go over and ask them now ..

It doesnt sound like it has too much fruit on it apart from innovation and sunroof (i.e. dont think its a sport) .. and its a demo (so you;d expect 3-4 k off because of that) ..so that's a pretty avg deal I reckon.

If sunroof, comfort and HUD are standard on 2011 now as per post then this makes it well worthwhile. sunroof is a no brainer, comfort would be VERY useful as fiddling with key is a pain esp with kids stuff constantly in hands, and HUD is actually pretty good and useful if you want to hold on to your licence (its a bit like a speed nanny and i wish I had it!)

I'll live with my 2010 35d for two years, then flick over ...probably to 50i with 7 seats as my daughter will be 7 then and can legally get out of booster etc ..right now 7 seats just doesnt work as I have 2 kids under 6.

Why 50i and not 40d you may ask? we'll ...they promised 8.8l//100 combined. I do mosty city driving and Im getting more like 16 in the real world, so figure that I might as well get 20l/100 from 50i and enjoy the extra oomp and fruit for marginal increase in fuel bills relative to the price of the car (and we only do about 8k per year if that)

Good luck guys, be patient and keep wallet closed until June/July delivery ..I rushed in and overall wish I had waited 6 months extra ... but that's life ..can't complain too much as the 35d is still great and reality is its impossible to always have the very latest unless you are willing to turnover each 18 months ...
35d was a great car, don't think 40d will make much difference. I would have got one if there is a good deal and I could hold back from thinking in 3 month my new car would be an older model

35d may enjoy better reliability too, new model will take sometime to be bug free, i guess

yup, same strategy here. tried bp, mobil, shell, don't feel the difference.

You missed my point. If you are getting 16s from your 35d (you say 16.8 now) there's no way that you get 20 (as you originally suggested) from the 50i unless, as I said, there's something wrong with your 35d. Others may get 20 from their 50i but then most people get 10 to 12s (or better) from their 35ds. If you could match the consumption of your 35d with others, then what others say about the 50i will be a guide, otherwise it won't be of any help ... unless your 35d is sick.
Even the ADR figures for the 50i see it use 67% more fuel than the 40d and, while the ADR figures aren't an accurate guide as to real-world consumption, their relativity to one another is accurate given the nature of the test procedure. Assuming the 40d and 35d are much of a muchness (40d is actually claimed to be a little better), then extrapolating your 16.8 to the 50i (using the ADR figures for relativity) you will get 27.9. Hence my comment that consumption you'll get out of the 50i (if everything is okay with your 35d) will "close to 30".

Nope, got your point ..

my post to the X6 guys will be asking on an apples to apples driving scenario basis i..e

-avg trip length about 3-4km at a time
-city based driving, not normally traffic lights but get roundabouts and that sort of stuff
-not too much of a pussy foot so do like to accerlate here and there esp off the mark

also - when I keep an eye on the fuel usage needle if often heads up to the 20 mark (max) when accelerating - I suspect because my trips are so short that I spend half of my time in that situation ..which would explain why I'm seeing 16l / 100 on average ....

interesting that when I drove a new 520d around for a few weeks (therefore representing my typical driving style etc) I was getting around 9.2l / 100. the bmw site says 7.5 for 'city' driving - so i was about 25% over the official ....

the official for 35d city driving is 11.1 - so i'm about 50% over that at 16.5 .. so if 50i behaves more like 35d then you're right ...official says 19.6 city for 50i ..so 50% on top of that could in theory get me close to 30 fark.

Maybe I need to look at new 5 series touring

Not that it really helps you, but yeh that does sound a fair bit higher than what it should be using fuel-wise. To give you a bit of background info, I used to live out on the southside of brisbane at hillcrest - driving from there to indooroopilly and back each day for work in my 3.0sd my avg consumption was ~8.5L/100. Last october I moved to indooroopilly and my avg consumption went up to ~10.5. Like you, I like to give it a bit of boot fairly regularly

Hi all,

Sorry to hijack the thread.

Just wondering if anyone has the 6FL USB/audio interface option? If so, did you receive a "Y" cable with it free? I believe this cable is to connect an ipod/iphone via USB so it can be controlled via iDrive, and steering wheel volume controls.

I've tried plugging the Apple USB cable my ipod touch (have also tried my iphone without success) into the USB slot in armrest console and glovebox, but iDrive displays it as 'Not Supported' or 'Reading...' and does nothing.

I've told my dealer and he said I would need a "Y" cable from BMW, which they can order in - he did not say but I'm sure they will try to charge me for it. From what I've read here, those in the USA get this cable included with 6FL.

If you bought this cable, how much and where?

Thanks,
Edward
