Just 1 Month Into Ownership And I've Gone MOD-MAD!!!

1 Attachment(s)
I just bought my X this month (May 2008) and already, I've put Brembo cross-drilled rotors with akebono pads, painted the calipers red, installed chrome Beyern Multi 20" rims (too many potholes in Brooklyn to go any bigger than 20 but I'd prefer 22's), and a Mul-T-Lock transmission lock (it's a 5spd manual). I changed all the interior lights, backup bulbs, side markers, and license plate bulbs to white leds, rear turn signals to amber leds, and replaced the rear light assembly with a smoked led assembly. I'm literally in the process of clearing out my turn signals and installing a set of umnitza predator chromium angel eyes but I had to go to work (also one of the rings broke during installation but my boy Nick @ Jlevisw.com has a replacement on the way!).

Luckily we have a subway system here in NYC because the headlight assemblies are surely taken apart and strewn across my living room right now (had to go to work). Just before I left, the UPS guy arrived with a package which I'll assume is the HID foglight conversion kit I ordered which came with an upgrade to change my stock HID's to 6000k to match the fogs. The only thing more I want to do is change the interior to brushed aluminum and the only kit I know is available from rover-something on Ebay and it costs $800+. I'm thinking I may take the trim pieces off and paint them along with the kidney grilles with a silver caliper epoxy paint kit (very thick paint with a nice lustre).

OH! And I'd like to remove that bull bar and close up the holes in the front bumper. I think the bull bar makes the X look dated.

Is there anything left to do!!?? I hope I can think of nothing because I've definitely spent well over $9000 between the $2300 spent at the dealer the 1st week, $2600 on the rims the second, $2500 on the extended warranty from carchex.com, $700 on the brakes, and all this other extra stuff. DAMN! I didnt realize it while I was spending. Anyway, as long as I'm happy, right? Check out my Lincoln LS 5spd too. The guy in the picture is the guy I sold it to, not me but as you can see, I was even back then an aspiring BMW owner.

Of course after saying all that I cant the pics I have are too big right? Well at least you'll see my first love Kitt (the Lincoln LS). I'll post pics of Brawn (my new X) later but that's him under my name.

It's a toss up really. The TB has more HP and torque, but not near the luxury or refinement of the X5. The noticible difference in driving impressions revolves around the transmission. The TB holds each gear longer while the X5 seems to always be shifting and hunting for the right gear. They are both a blast to drive. I need to get to find a way to get just a bit more torque out of the 4.8.

The 4.8is simulates more like manual and that's why you notice the shifting. The gas pedal is very responsive.
TB will not come close to 4.8is's 0-60.

I guess it would come down to the driver as most official test results that I have read put the X5 at 5.9 0-60, and the TBSS at 5.7 0-60. It really doesn't matter to me, just published numbers I have seen.

Not yet. Had some more work done though. Rear control arms, radio, and driver's door handle replaced $1500 (smartautowarranty.com covered about $1000 of the repairs).

That whole angel eye thing from jlevi was a fiasco. The $200 angel eye kit they sent me was identical to a kit I bought from ebay for $50(+$20s&h) down to the packaging.

I took out the led turn signals because even with resistors, I couldnt get the fast blink to go away and it was driving me crazy. I still have led side markers and the chrome-amber turn signal bulbs front and rear. The front signals are cleared out with the angel eyes and I did complete the hid foglight conversion.

I know its a sacrilege to BMW purists but oh well, oh well. I changed the front and rear roundels to M\\\ emblems and the shifter to a satin aluminum M\\\ shifter (I have a 5 spd manual). I took off the 3.0 off the front fenders and replaced them with M\\\ emblems as well (I can already hear the purists calling for my crucification now).

Too bad for the purists. 1st of all BMW should have 1) made an X5M (an MX5 would've been a Miata, ha,ha) , 2) should have made it with a true manual transmission, and 3) made it look just like mine. At the very least they could've let the V8 come with a stick. And now the E70 is completely devoid of a manual! BMW sucks! I'm buying a wagon next (unless they stop offering manuals in that...)

Didnt do the dash pieces yet. I'll have some pictures coming real soon. Thanks for your interest.

i pewrsonally think its a good idea from BMW stand point to up the sales of the M-badge because it does stand for performance, styling, individuality and when you paying the dough for a high end X5 or X6 why not slap the badge on, there are amg ML63, they aint burnt for doing that!

toohotdoc 07-17-2008 02:00 PM

Bro, i totally agree that they should have made a M-series for the X brand, but saying it should look like yours, that was my disagreement. No offense to your car, it looks nice but its should have look like the lemans X5 and built the performance around the e39 6sp so its still affordable.

Oh ok. Got you. I wasnt feeling myself when I made my comment about it looking like mine. I just meant it should have had something like the aero kit (or Lemans) to give it some shoulders and visual oomph with led taillights and angel eyes with cleared corners to make it stand out from the pack. A performance brake package and some nice wheels to show off the hardware would only enhance the look. I definitely like the Lemans kit though.

So many people have stopped me to ask if I'd imported my X5M from Germany and how could they get one. BMW dropped the ball on the performance X5... at least so far...

What you mean you got a X5M, is that what you call it or is it a one off BMW factory custom projekt for a BMW CEO, and then you got a hold of it. :stickpoke , just joking and i hear ya man, they should have made one but i think a X5 M-series is coming or X6 at least is.:D

Not necessarily...a lot of the 00-03 have that little amber there without actually being made for US...

Hi
My X5 is European version.

Jedi Mind Trick 01-11-2009 01:09 PM

I went camping and I maintained a decent 180kmph speed all the way, and I ended up with smoke silver rims from the brake dust. :D

http://www.freeimagehosting.net/uploads/5df93e8200.jpg

I kept it for a few days then I washed it. It looked nice.

X5Newb 01-11-2009 03:07 PM

 Hours later, I feel like going out and at least cleaning my X5 (which I was going to do yesterday and then got lazy).

I still haven't taken any pics since I bought it mid of last year (have I mentioned I can be lazy?). Hopefully I can get some nice pics when my girlfriend and I go skiing later in February/March.

I've already built a list of mods I'd like to make and it's going to kill my pocketbook. Hopefully it's as reliable as my ti has been (although that was built in Germany). Soooooooooooo much work to do!

Love all the pics, it was great to see everyone's rides. This thread along with the "hidden features" one should be mandatory reading/viewing :kewlpics:

These are from October. '01, 3.0, Jet Black with black interior (light wood), Sport, Premium, 4.4 grille, 3M clear bra, Dension Icelink ipod integration. 87K miles and bought new Feb '01.

jsears 04-13-2009 02:09 PM

Yep, mtX5 got it right. It is the Dinan X5 logo, went you get your 10 Dinan points to qualify for the Dinan Deck Badge you also get the new X5 badge. I like it, it looks a little sportier.

I notice a huge difference in the 4.8 after all of the Dinan upgrades. The throttle response is better, better shift points, it sounds a little meaner when you step on the gas (don't have the exhaust or x-pipe, yet...). Would I pay the money for the Dinan upgrades again, you bet I would!:thumbup:

Plus it is nice witht he 15% off right now! You'll love your X5 a lot more after the upgrades are in place!

I added the Intravee II.
Will be adding running boards.

Just want to thank everyone on Xoutpost for all the great information, I'm new as a member and enjoy this site very much. It took me 8 months to find the X5 that I wanted; it sure was worth the wait. I bought my X5 with 32,000 miles, purchased the extended warrantee and got a heck of a deal from cosmomotorsonline.com. I will need to send an updated picture; I've installed the BMW roof cross bars, Dice IPod adaptor w/dsp and hitch.

Car has been lowered (springs in front, computer lowered in back), has a CAI, and the basic Dinan engine and transmission software. The car also has the LeMans Blue interior trim, factory alcantara, and every other option that was offered.

Edit: Forgot to mention, front resonators removed and replaced with bullet-style ones, and it's probably getting an Eisemann Race cat-back soon.

Not yet unfortunately. It's pretty clean though for a 66k mile car. It's my first BMW and I think I'm hooked. I can't believe how well this SUV handles either. Oh, and the front plate was there, otherwise it would have never put it on.

Edit: Forgot to mention, front resonators removed and replaced with bullet-style ones, and it's probably getting an Eisemann Race cat-back soon.

Nice pics.

Yeah, it's the peforated material. My interior looks exactly like this, except with a different steering wheel and no headrest TVs:

http://images.autotrader.com/images/..._A.562x421.jpg

I know it's a factory insert, and it appears to be alcantara. I have been looking to replace the inserts with a matching black perforated alcantara, but with a blue backing so that all of the holes look blue, which I think would tie into the interior nicely, but alcantara does not make it. For now, plans are the exhaust, change all the interior lighting over to LED (ordered), alcantara headliner, and upgrade the sound system, which sucks. On top of it, it has the wiring installed to hook up an SMG wheel, and I have an SMG wheel I will be re-wrapping, and I'll probably do a V1 in the rear view mirror, since Stealth Ones are just too damn expensive and hard to come by now. Anyway, that's a long-term list, since I am in college, but it should all get done within the next year or two.

 so very nice. Love the blue trimming, I've actually never seen that before.

I have black alcantara suede with blue inserts, and blue stitching. I'll try to post some pics up as well.

You beat me to it! NEVER, I repeat, NEVER, put an M badge on a non-M car. One of the biggest mistakes a BMW owner can make.If you don't know what I mean, go post your pic with the emblem on an M forum and ask for comments. Anyway, here are a few pictures of our new/used '04 4.4 we picked up last weekend. I've been looking for about 2 months and found it on bimmerfourms. It's almost fully loaded, original owner with records and only 50k miles and one of the cleanest '04's I've seen (and now own).

///M has nothing to do with it  ...

Supercharging your X may give you valid reason but a "groul" won't mean anything when you're at a red light with a performance SUV next you.

hey ChilliWilli thou have little faith in your Bimmer. -- there is not much SUV out there that can beat a 3.0 bimmer much less a 4.4 or better. I have no fear in my little rocket. :)

Maybe it's a poser or wannabe thing. Trying to represent your car as something it's not. I suppose its kinda like putting a V12 badge on a 325. It doesn't even exist. Besides, there is no such thing as an E53 M anyway... :dunno: But if you like it, go for it.

It's like a transvestite: the outside appearance does not suggest what's under the hood. If it isn't an M, don't put the badges on. Now, let's say you do a swap to say, an S62, then I doubt anyone will argue with that badge on the car.

I agree.Everyone do what they like and people have to accept it.
Maybe its something that we all go through!I am guilty of removing the 316i badge from my first company car(I was only 24!) and replacing it with a 325 badge!I wouldnt dream of doing it now ,20 years later!
Then a few years later (1987) when I was lucky enough to buy my own M3-E30,I am sure I didnt approve of people sticking an "M" badge on their“s 316i:D

I remember then that the "M" badge was so sought after, that people stole them off cars.

Going back now, even Bmw maybe guilty of sticking and "M" badge on cars not produced by Bmw Motorsport/M-Technik).I am refering to the late 1980s M535i and M635i!Maybe someone will correct me here:dunno:

Also,if it wasnt for the Mazda MX5,maybe the 4.6is would have an "M" badge instead of the "is":p:.

There are a plethora of SUV's that will annihilate a 3.0i and your 4.4i without trying.

FYI...my previous 4.6iS had the Dinan S2 system...my current 4.6iS is well-tuned as well. I have enough faith in my X to not pretend it's something it isn't just because of an "emblem". ///M is far more than just an exhaust growl.

IMO, the only E53 deserving of an ///M emblem is the E53 LeMans V12...another may be member JMH's personalized 4.6iS or those with supercharged 4.6iS'. There are several on this board with superchargers.

As i said...if you're in love with it, that's all that matters. However, besides the fact that your X is labeled something that it's FAR from being, you will invite battles that you're most likely to lose.

petener999 11-22-2009 02:24 PM

I actually disagree. Performance has nothing to do with incorrectly representing a car.

I'm sure there are plenty of E53's out there that have enough work done to out perform a real x5 M- I see the problem being that no matter how fast or modified the car is, it will never actually be an M. Just call it a fast E53...I guess what I mean, is that no car deserves and M badge if its not an M from the factory.

No feathers ruffled here...just responding to your question. Before you edited your previous post, i believe you asked why or how some feel about badging non M's with an ///M badge? Again, if you like it...
