My 1999 323i (215k runs like a champ) which i've owned for almost 6 years and 100,000 miles used to have 25% tint on the front which made it look way sportier but had to take it off to register the car, and my 2001 x5 3.0 purchased in november with 99k miles @ 9300$.. runs great but has a few minor things which someone as ocd as me would have to fix. not pictured are the changes i've made since purchase, changed the side markers to black and changed all the emblems to black/white and also got all weather bmw mats...
planned mods... 1. bilstein sport suspension package (2 shocks 2 struts works with stock springs) 2. powder coating rims 3. ipod input or halinguan / dynavin upgrade.. debating 4. stealth subwoofer 5. the front bumper is not sitting perfectly flush how it should, I will attempt to properly seat this or change the bumper (aero package?) any other suggestions? |

sure my philosophy is simple ...what makes the engine run is fuel air and spark..anything u can do to make it breath better or clean your fuel injectors once in a while, clean or change out spark plugs or if u are super motto u can get headers and exhaust..but its a family car so don't get carried away...its simple way to make sure u car runs at its best... some people don't care about things like that ..(no one in this forum).. so when the car starts acting up they loose it....my car is a smooth running beast no problems thank god and preventive maintenance..."my soul smiles when i drive"

I would shy away from that filter. If not used perfectly you could do more damage than good. Ie. MAF covered with oil then dirt.

Hello from Nantucket.
These pictures are from the day i got it from the dealership a month ago. |
This is my winter version of my 4.6is
http://i141.photobucket.com/albums/r64/GOFASTGUY/X5.jpg http://i141.photobucket.com/albums/r...ASTGUY/X5a.jpg With the right winter tires, it's a great offroader and portable shooting platform. I'm getting a lift kit and Bilstein shocks up front as well. |
now That's a riot.. hell, lose the eye and just gut-ruck the stock, strap on a couple 50-gal.. wreck the paint.. and prepare to star in the undoubtedly soon-to-be-released MADMAX re-invention..
those casings gotta' steeng lika' beetch.. and they were L O U D on the range, tunneling the volume gotta be retina-bending.. |
good choice on the rimes really good eye buddy and for the free time nicely put
|
I'll have my X5 detailed shortly so it repells the salts and winter but for the most part I need it to take me to work and to the range and back. I do consulting and R & D for a gun manufacturer so I need something pleasant to drive and this does the job.

Hele mooie auto, fraaie foto
Is dit de IJssel in de achtergrond??
I am curious, are those 22" wheels? What is the brand and what size tires are you using? |
I just finished installing the lift kit I ordered from Fluid Motor Union. Apparently it was the first kit sold in Canada so after I wash it tomorrow, I'll post some pics. The new ride height didn't take anything away from the ride quality and along with the 2" lift, I also replaced the front struts with Bilstein sport suspension and new airbags in the rear. The kit fit really well and was quite easy to install. I've got slightly bigger 18" winter tires then stock and didn't need a wheel alignment either which was a relief. My rear tires are 285/60/R18 Blizzacks and the fronts are 265/65/R18. I'll take some measurements tomorrow on what the combined lift ended up being just to give you guys some idea of the difference. Fluid Motor Union was awesome to deal with. They took the time to answer all of my questions and concerns and made sure I knew that they were only a phone call away just in case I needed help even though I live in Alberta, Canada and they are in Illinois.
|
Today I changed the power steering fluid and the reservoir/filter

Just picked up my first X5 or Soccer Dad car as my wife is calling it. 2002 4.6is with new tires, brakes, transmission and water pump. Rides great but the SES came on last night and I have not run the code yet.
Now to make it louder....too quiet for a regular Mustang owner. 4 kids takes the fun out of a Mustang....but not the X5. Not sure I attached the photo correctly...new to forums. |
Great looking X! Don't see too many imola red and definitely love the 87s...
|
Welcome smwmustang! Nice looking X. I have the same yr. and love it with 130K. it does have issues recently, but fixable.
|
Thanks! I looked for a while to find it in this color and at the price I picked it up for I can handle the issues that come with it.
I stopped by Auto Zone and had them run the code. It had to do with the transmission but after running it the light went off. |

|
ok.... (/me removes the "M" badge") ok.. were undercover now sir..
|
ok OK fine fine... before all the //M enthusiasts lose a fit... :D
hahhaah |
Every true BMW enthusiast should throw a fit about it.
It's unacceptable. |
really? why is that??? the 4.8is was labeled the "undercover M" .... this car is as close to a M version car as you can get.. stiff as fuck.. fast.. powerful.. am I missing something?? just take a drive in a 4.8is & you'll know... there was even a M trim offererd (without the M words ofcourse - politics)... at the time when the 4.8is came out it was uncool to label heavy bulky suvs as M vehicles.. bmw would not have it... theres even a article on this matter.. I guess now after a few years bmw will badge every version (x1, x3, x5, x6) with a M version just for that cash flow... :) ...
but I do see your point.. |
Quote:
and... MX5? Doesn't look right. |
I understand that and even though it was labeled the "fastest SUV in the world"... BMW still didn't label it an M vehicle. It just has been, is and will always be a thing that you don't do to a non-M vehicle. Do what you want though, just letting you know people will always say something about it.
+1  |
Quote:
|
Check out this article.. -> http://www.worldcarfans.com/10801212594/latest-bmw-x5-48is-spy-photos
one of many regarding bmw labeling their SUVS M vehicles... from the article and I quote "Importantly BMW policy is that SUVs cannot be badged as M cars, therefore we don’t expect this X5 to be dubbed M X5 or X5 M or similar at all." I guess BMW changed that policy real quick around 2008 when they started searching for more $$ from the market.... |
Quote:
The fact of the matter is, in 2002, BMW originally labeled the 4.6is an "X5M" there are people on this forum with documentation to prove it. However, they changed their mind and did not label it an ///M car, that is by BMW's Choice, keep it that way |

I wonder if this thing is quick or not.. Could be a sleeper. The badge is pretty funny though. Regarding the M badge, as fitting as it is to that body, unless it goes like a new X5 M, I wouldn't badge it as one. I think 550hp or close to that is the number to get to, to earn the ///M badge. Someone should be making a twin turbo kit for this engine by now. After my body work is done, I'll more seriously look into upgrading the power on my SAV. |

My 06 X5 and 95 M3
OK, I'll join in.
The X5 is nearly stock and will stay that way - He's an 06 6 speed stick with only 34K miles (family hauling & client meeting vehicle). His name is Rolf. The M3 has hardly any stock parts left - she's all modded, fast, nasty and so much fun you can't stop grinning the whole time you're in her ;) Her name is Gretchen. https://dl.dropbox.com/u/6368171/201...-03-25_896.jpg https://dl.dropbox.com/u/6368171/Gretchen_2008a.jpg |
Don't know why people love adding M badges.
The worst are those ugly M grills. Heck on my old e36 M3 I actually removed the badges for a cleaner look. |
Quote:
But what I don't understand is, making a non //M car look like an //M or install a //M badge on a X5 to let people beleive it is a //M is wrong, but making a 3.0 or 4.4 look like a 'is' is ok? :dunno: |
In the Community of the e53's ....from what i see here..we are accepted to do this since we are changing the looks of e53 to make it more aggressive look therefore it is welcomed, Owner's that had bought their sav's like a 3.0, 4.4i maybe it was a budget, fuel cost, price, commuter decision then when the 4.6is(2000-2003), 4.8is came out (2004-2006) BMW Allowed these owners (including me) to retrofit our Sav's to 4.8is because they allowed it to be by using same body style as the older e53 going all the way to year 2000 and gave Us the option of upgrading the looks exterior wise. BMW allows it...although we do not accept putting an M badge on a E53 x5(2000-2006) due to e53's Never had an M car :stickpoke so I'm guessing thats why....:dunno::dunno:
|
As long as u dont put the 4.8is badge on ur 3.0 i see
Nothing wrong with making it look more sportier by adding Some 4.6/4.8i sport parts and keeping a more oem look instead Of adding some ebay Rice. |

I've grown into them a bit, I like them because they are rare and different. The wind noise is almost nil with the windows cracked. I want to get the sunroof deflector too but they are NLA. Some pop up on eBay from time to time.
