X5 cross country trip March 2011

I just completed a cross country trip with my X5 towing 5,000 pounds in a 17 foot trailer. The X5 had 92,000 miles on the clock and no issues since purchased.

It was quite a trip, six days and approximately 3,000 miles long, started out in Virginia and ended up in Seattle Washington.

We had to drive through all kinds of weather including but not limited to rain, hail, fog and snow at different parts of the country, with no issues, however, with the constant fear of jackknifing.

On board I had all kinds of code readers, BMW diagnostic software on my laptop, emergency internet access, power converters, spare engine parts like cooling system hoses, fuel filter, work shop manuals, etc. and luckily I didn't have to use any of it as we had no issues.

The X5 is a 2002 model with the 4.4 engine, what a work horse it was, going through high elevation mountain areas, effortlessly. The transmission had a tendency of downshifting all the time to maintain my set cruise speed of 70 MPH, so I experimented with with the sport and manual shifting modes. I discovered that manual shifting was best for minimal automatic downshifts.

The engine ran cool the entire trip with very low oil consumption.

When we arrived at our final destination we parked and several hours later the left rear tire went flat, it picked up a nail on the way. The flat was repaired and the MX5 Michelin tires now have over 50,000 miles on them with no issues prior to this.

What a great trip it was! My X5 turned out to be the ultimate driving machine, I'd do this trip again without any fear, this SAV is built BMW tuff.

Sorry about the low res cell phone pic below, this picture was taken at a rest stop in MN just before the hail storm.

Thank you, alot of elbow grease and some meguiars works wonders lol, I love her the only problem is petrol in northern Ireland is around £6.50 a gallon roughly $10.7 American dollars. Sorry about large pictures but it's my first post.

huntertec 05-27-2011 10:47 PM

More pics please! your X looks in as new condition. I sometimes wonder about M badges on E53s but I guess if any model deserved to have it, it would be a 4.8is, I'd like to drive one some day. Your fuel is obviously expensive in Ireland compared to Aus our problem here is the distances we sometimes have to travel, hope your X is as good to you as it looks.

jazi 05-28-2011 03:05 AM

Thank you again, yes I only put m badges on this week for a trail, there is so little x5 is,s here no one really knows what it is so I thought the only way was to stick the badges on lol and am I right to say they reserved estriol blue only for m,s lol. I guess if any other badge it should be alpina as they done the work on the engine. Would like to do the headlight update and mybe lower 30mm but getting the right parts here is a problem mybe some of my uk x5 drivers can point me in the right direction.

huntertec 05-28-2011 04:02 AM

Doesn't your 'IS' have air bag suspension which is adjustable? I've dropped mine by 30mm (coil fr & re) I know 10mm isn't much but I should have gone 40. I've put some BMW Motorsport International badges on my X there off a E36 M3, I dont have your HP but I've got 615Nm under the lid (remaped 3.0d ) and some of other mods. Don't forget the pics. ( the M badges look great )

jazi 05-28-2011 06:18 AM

Huntertec that is a lot of torque Enough for any man lol . She has air at back and springs up front, If i lower front with 40mm springs will she skier her self at the back to level or do I need to put in lower links at back to fool it?

huntertec 05-28-2011 06:34 AM

Better to do a search on that one I know there are a number of posts dealing with rear air suspension.

I pick silver because its the easiest color to care for. Ive had my share of black and its a nightmare to have. I spent half the time cleaning it than enjoying it.

You are correct! The car originally came from San Diego

I believe that the general concensus here is that M badges are a resounding "no-no" on any X5 other than the X5M.

...however, mine has a small M on the bottom of my (e46 M3) steering wheel that would leave a silly gap if removed. Otherwise, there is not and will not ever be other M badges on my X5.

Mate I ordered a new set of badges and then used plasticote to paint them. I gave them about 5 coats I think. All I did was mark the old badges with masking tape, rip them off, clean up the residue with acetone, then stick the new ones on. The new ones came with their own double sided tape/adhesive as per the factory.

Overall it was pretty easy. You in Sydney?

Alec, install of the DEPO Pre-facelift Headlamp Housings w/ 60 LED AE & Auto-Level could be done in a free evening, at a casual pace. I went about it a different way electronically, that added an hour, for what it's worth. Not sure how that would apply to your facelifted housings. (What year is yours?)

Thanks! The car now has a little over 13K miles after the weekend. I drove it to the coast (Lincoln City/Newport) and back on Saturday... The car is actually from Ohio, but they do kinda look like Idaho plates...

Again congratulations on a great car! I know it's hard to stop driving a BMW so it's good to find an endless road.

Be sure to take some back roads home via Skyline/German town Road and feel it hug the corners.

Another piece of advice, if you spend a little time every so often inspecting your X it may save you headaches later on. I love staring at her anyway so it gives me some quality time with my X5. I have cut off potentially expensive repairs by notecing signs of paints of failure through these sessions.

No, not yet. I have to take it to the BMW dealer for them to do it. (Friday Aug. 26) None of my friends here in Sweden seem to have the right pc program to do it with. Even mine will not work. :dunno:(AutoEnginuity 7.4) But I’m not too worried about the ride. It is stuck in the lower passion and has not lost any air yet and plus, the ride is sooooo smooooth! Kind of like it & it look’s cool too!!! I’ll post more after I’ve been to BMW with it.:beerchug:

Next for me is 4.6/8 rear diffuser and wheels (either colour change or new wheels). I've always had black wheels but think I may go for a dark gunmetal on this

I just bought this thing, and I hate it...nothing but issue after issue..I also want to throw a shout out to ACURA 101 WEST in Calabasas Cali..you can suck my dick...these people totally ripped me off..failed to mention this pile was in a accident and covered up, all new front end paint that is fading after two months now..the front bumper is totally bent behind a new bumper cover..looks like someone hit a big pole..front rotors are warped, and didn't notice until i really had to use the brakes, thanks to california LA shit for traffic. Already have about 2000.00 in parts replaced, front end now is creeking like crazy, and driver door window regulator just broke last night...I might as well have SUCKER tattooed on my forehead since that's what the dealership read when I walked in there door....nothing worse than buying a car with payments and hating it, which I rarely drive now, but stuck with it and stupid payment...car looks good though..from a distance...just like a porn star..looks hot from three feet away, but up close has lots of make up and is a royal bitch, temper mental, and high maintenance...If It Fly's, Fuck's or Floats...It's cheaper to RENT !!!

What is a car wash?

This is after 3 days of tearing around town going to fire calls. I may try and go out for some better pictures but there is quite a lot of mud, salt and leaves on the vehicle. At least everything still works on the car. I really wish I had a Wrangler in this this case...

aimtimes100 11-09-2011 07:44 AM

nice.what happened to your rear windshield wiper buddy?

x-dreame 11-09-2011 09:43 AM

I removed it due to the fact that I never really used it anyways. I found a company that makes glas plugs special made for BMW. It has the exact diameter. You glue it in from the inside. I like the way it looks. Gives it nice clean look! :)

It does look clean..I had thought about removing mine..since I never really liked having a rear wiper and never use it..I hate the idea of turning it on when the back windows usually get really dirty and I didn't want to risk scratching the heck out of the glass...So good idea..But I'll leave it for now..I like having options i guess (hense) Sport SUV etc. Your X5 looks nice..it's nice to see so many taken care of, unlike the guy that bought my old wheels and tires..he just tossed them and crammed all four in his X5 and not worring that the tires were all over the leather seats and he had to push and just about kick a wheel and tires to fit through the rear door...I couldn't believe it...anyway, nice ride you have..I went from 9" all way around to 9.5 and 10.5 x 20 Much nicer looking

I wanna show my car but somehow i can't get the images to work, i keep getting these flippin' X's on my pics! Is it because i haven't posted that much on the site?

740ilDuke 11-09-2011 09:16 PM

Once you upload your image to say, Photobucket use the [IMG] code. Copy paste, and you are done.

Haha, don't be hatin' :)
But seriously, it is a very nice car. Minor touchups needed for it to be close to perfect condition. Also, it has traveled almost 10,5k miles (not sure if i converted it correctly, approx. 170000 Km).

Also, i do miss the navigation system, but hey, that's what you get when you buy a used car.

just get a dynavin. all the fun of a nav system without the pain of slicing wires AND you get to keep the OEM look:thumbup:

4.6toddy 11-11-2011 08:34 PM

I'm surprised to see that without Nav. Looks amazing though, very jealous of the titanium trim inside! yummy!
Love the aftermarket BMW logo too.... i've been gazing at those on ebay since I got mine

Anyone in the NC/SC area looking for a set of Like New wheels and tires?
We just sold our X5 and now our wheels need a new home too.

Let me now if you are interested. They are great and look new, no scratches, chips, nicks and the tires have less the 2k on them.

That is awesome looking. I know you hated selling that. Was it repainted? It looks like NEW! Great wheels too, but I'm stuck on style 87's. I'm in NC as well. ARRRGH.
