The alternator/waterpump/AC compressor uses belts...the valve train uses a chain...at least it does on the N62 & M62TU. If you're asking about the "timing" belt or chain (for the valve train)...BMW hasn't used a belt since the old M20 engine last used in the early 1990's 3 series (like 1993 was the last model year of the M20 320i/325i) http://bimmerboard.com/members/q/ori...0Line%20Up.jpg |

I imagine the question about belts and chains is really a question of whether you have to replace the timing belt periodically. Sadly, the chains aren't so bulletproof. They run along plastic surfaced guides that wear and fail, allowing the chain to slap which then accelerates wear and chain damage. Luckily, it usually gets noisy a little before it breaks (most people don't hear anything before a timing belt breaks). The chains and guides are not lifetime parts...

But chains last way longer than belts.

my passenger side air bag light is always off but when someone sits in the seat it turns on and says "pass side air bag off" and my air bag light on the dash comes on

Sounds like you are having a well known problem with the occupancy sensor mat buried in the passenger seat. Some years have a recall on it. There are DIY posted on how to change it also.
