I agree, I don't see much of a difference at all. :confused: The rear seems jacked up for some reason. Those are obviously two different X5's. One has the black shadowline trim and the other has chrome & camouflaged bumpers. I doubt this is the facelift version.

It's a facelift; not a redesign. There really aren't many differences between the pre and post facelifted E53s, either.

New bumpers + jacked up... maybe they are testing an off-road package?

I find it very hard to believe this is a mid-cycle facelift if it only involved bumpers that actually look less modern / cool than the current ones. If you think about the current X5's shortcomings I can only really think of a mid-cycle refresh involving:

* engine upgrades to TT 6 and 8 cylinders
* i-Drive update

(1) There were very strong rumors that the 2008 X5 would have the twin turbo six engine, but it never happened.

(2) The twin-turbo 3-series is know to have been marginal on cooling, and probably should have had a substantial oil cooler or larger radiator.

(3) The twin-turbo in an X5 would be operating at a higher average HP level, generating more heat, due to the greater weight of the vehicle.

Possible conclusion?

BMW was planning to put the twin-turbo six into the 2008 X5, but encountered cooling issues and put it on hold until the 2010 model, when they could redesign the bumper and front end to allow oil coolers with adequate airflow to be installed, and possibly a larger radiator.

Just a bit of pure speculation on my part.

I think the most important change/question is what will be under the hood. ;)

So is this change going to be equivalent to the 2004 facelift the E53 got? If so, boy that came pretty early didn't it?

Bimmer4125 01-31-2009 09:28 AM

I like it. I agree with Michelle that it has shades of the E53 but I think the front end is more "aggressive" looking with the X6 kinda sorta air intakes. It has subtle changes but thank god nothing outrageous. It's a nice update. My two cents adjusted for inflation yet to come.
