The 4.8is has very few options like what was said, so don't worry about staying away from any certain 4.8is options. Now if you're debating on X5 options like whether to stick to the 3.0 or the 4.4 that's another can of worms ![]() I personally like the looks, motor and features that come with the 4.8is. More $, a little less gas mileage, possibly more maintenance with air ride and so on. Just take the next week like you said and invest into reading all the info. here on the forum about the different models, opinions, etc. Hope it turns out well. |

I just started looking into the Air Ride Problems...
![]() A little scary... Is this a common for them to have problems or is it like all other cars where it is just one of those things that happens sometimes... I know that some Models have different issues... MINIs have windscreen issues. About 80-90% MINI windscreens crack down the center. (I am on my 2nd) BMW says that the cracks are because of rock chips... ![]() I didn't know if BMW is addressing the suspension the same way... Or if it is a problem that BMW knows about are they going to correct it or are you just SOL... Just wondering... |

Air-ride issues are hit or miss. I have several friends who either still have or once owned a 4.8is...each of them had issues. I've had the warning light appear on my 4.6is...it disappeared as fast as it appeared. Not discouraging you, but it could happen. Either way, you should be covered by the CPO amongst other issues if it did happen.
I should say that one friend in particular drove quite aggressively and NYC pot-holes are not always forgiving. His issue was pot-hole related. I used to live in Alpharetta so i'm aware of the much better road conditions in ATL. I say go for it...good luck on negotiations ![]() Last edited by chilliwilli; 02-23-2009 at 04:42 PM. |

I have an 06 4.8is and I love it - no issues except wear on the steering wheel center. That was covered under warranty.
Bought it with 8400 miles in Sept 07 and now have 27.7k miles - I have been fortunate enough to own some really nice vehicles and can say this is one of the best and most enjoyable ones I've ever had. Mine came loaded with everything except the rear load floor. Performance, comfort, style all check marks in my opionion. I'd be happy to talk to you if it would help - just send me a PM. Good luck. |

It sounds like a good enough deal. However, what was the original asking price? I assume you've already talked him down a bit. You can try to get a lower price because you're paying cash. Then depending on how much he's willing to go down, switch and ask him to throw in a service/maintenance contract for free or at a discounted rate. This maintenance contract is what you should be after.
Can't hurt to try. Remember, you've got more leverage than he does in this market. When I was researching buying our 4.8 I took into account that there WILL be service not just maintenance issues. I chose to take care of them as they come. I made my choice because of low confidence in the value of the CPO/maintenance contracts - because of the hit or miss of the actual dealers honoring them rather than the actual contract itself. Same goes for the third party warranties. Just my opinions ... Good Luck! |

Make sure it has a trailer hitch. If not have him install it. If it does and you don't want it, you can probably get $38,000 for it on this board.
The above is only an X5 World inside joke! |

It's definitely an awesome car, but I wouldn't rush to buy it just yet. Keep in mind there are tons of X5's on the market right now. Not that many 4.8is models of course, but still a lot.
To Do: 1. Get a printout of all the maintenance work done on it to date, that's #1. 2. Get a carfax report so you know how many owners, any accidents, was it a lease, etc. 3. What is the production date of the car btw? 4. If you post some more pictures of it (especially the interior) people will be able to tell you more about its features/options, etc. 5. It's great that it is a CPO and still under factory warranty. You'll want to go over it with a fine tooth comb if you buy it and get anything and everything fixed while under the standard warranty that looks like will expire in 11/2009, if not earlier depending on your mileage. 6. Does it come with the extended maintenance plan? That might be a negotiating point. FYI Dealer cost on that is $1,495. MSRP is $1,695 though many dealers will charge more for it. X5 World members can get it for $1,595, my post for more info. 7. You can bet at 40,000 miles it must be on it's 2nd set of tires (if not then they must be bald which can't be the case if it's a CPO). How do they look? What tires is it running BTW. If they are not Michelin Diamaris, then they almost certainly are not the original set the car came with. That might be a big ticket item for you in the very near future if they are already shot (especially look at the rears on their inner edges). 8. I'd love to see what kind of DVD system it has in it since if it has comfort seats it's not the BMW setup; maybe Invision, which is actually better IMHO. Do the headrests each have a DVD player or is there a DVD player mounted on the floor of the passenger area? 9. Has all the maintenance been done and it's up to date? 10. Has it been in the shop a lot for anything unusual (at least by 40,000 miles standards), like cooling system issues, electrical gremlins, suspension problems, water leaks. 11. How many times have the brakes been changed (will give you a good idea on how hard the previous owner(s) were on it. 12. Has the spare ever been used or the jack, etc. Just something to note. I think the other posters mentioned everything else already. I'm not sure what would be a fair price for it. Best to refer to some others who have recently bought one. Finally, do a little searching on this site, particularly for "advice" on purchasing an X5. Lots of good stuff to know. Don't get too scared about problems, since they tend to be rare. This board only represents a small number of the 616,867 E53 X5's that were built. (Fewer than 12,050 members on this board have 1 or more posts to their credit. If each of those members represented a single E53 X5 owner, that would be still be less than 2% of the E53 X5's made worldwide) Given that it's a 2006 model, most of the issues have been worked out by then and the car should be relatively bulletproof. Oh yeah, 3 more things. - Expect to get a radar detector because you won't be able to keep it under 90. - Get ready to pay for lots and lots of gas. 16mpg in your Jeep. I'd get sexually excited if I broke 15 mpg city. - This car is for your wife??? Wow, someone's a good husband! Last edited by X5 Meister; 04-15-2010 at 09:27 PM. |
