TCU in a RHD 2001 E53 - no bluetooth

I have navigated the depths of WDS and converted my wiring from BIT II to ULF/TCU and installed a TCU out of a UK 330i convertible. It appears in the 16.9 screen ok and suggests that its "Searching" for 2 minutes so I think I have the power and ibus correct. But no Bluetooth is visible, tried several phones, computers and other bluetooth devices to check.

The TCU:

I haven't corrected the VIN number yet (still the one from the 330i), but everything I read here had me expecting to install it and it to fire right up.

The antenna and cable are from the BIT II DECT system and the same part number as the Bluetooth, but I am seeing no Bluetooth coming out.

Any ideas or suggestions gratefully received.

Can you take a log of the following.

1) Put laptop in boot, set to NEVER SLEEP, close lid to save power and leave navcoder logging.
2) Lock car and walk away
3) Unlock car after 3-5 minutes (min 100 seconds for ibus sleep)
4) Get in, shut door, insert driver's seatbelt
5) hold the "sneezing man"
6) turn on ignition, continue holding for say 6 seconds
7) Hope ACTIVATE PHONE comes up
8) begin your pairing sequence

And attach the log file?

Thanks for taking a look at this, followed the instructions to the letter, was surprised you wanted the sneezing man pressed as everything I had read had me pressing the R/T button. The "Searching" message was up for two minutes and then it changed to "Activate Phone".

1) Buried in the BMW documentation is says the X5 TCU won't pair unless the driver's seatbelt is fitted. While this is probably calculated form the VIN, your May 2006 TCU must have shipped in an X3 or X5 (or the last M3 that rolled off the line).

2) Some say the TCU is in pairing mode for the first 2 minutes without pressing the MFL buttons. You saw SEARCHING in that state and could not pair. Maybe finding a way to clear all paired phones is one way to progress.

OK, thanks for the help, its encouraging! The TCU came from a 330i convertible (from the vin number and the seller I got it from), I guess it could of had life before that.

It did not appear at all at the activate phone stage (or any stage), but its interesting to know its trying I am using an iPhone to test - I assume that its a reasonable phone to test with.

So, possibly some way to reset the TCU needed - could it possibly be locked into a particular phone - by a dealer? Is it possible that its not set in a general pairing mode, but rather in a one to one relationship with a specific phone?

Would any of the BMW tools, IPNA, Gt1, etc be able to reset? I would need to change the VIN number in it with NavCoder first I guess (I haven't touched anything to date)

Other options would be to .... Turn off Bluetooth and back on again? Change the Name of the Bluetooth host, change the pin number... Would any of these be likely to change the current defaults?

Could you also dump the TCU coding data with Navcoder before and after doing the clear paired phones routine? Maybe Jochen can use it to clear all paired phones with Navcoder.

iPhone should be OK to test with.

I'm not sure what you can do with dealer tools. I did write a post on INPA that you might use. Allegedly INPA can initiate pairings. Might as well get the interface on order from China for a few quid whilst you are working on the other things.

I don't think changing the TCU BT name/code settings will help, although matching the VIN in the TCU to the car may be an exception. Also Navcoder can clear any fault codes stored in the TCU. If it has a fault with the antenna it might stop BT activating.

This has no effect what so ever and I cannot get the "Bluetooth Pairing" message to come up so will assume that its for ULF.

I also have IPNA running and have built a cable out of a KLL one from China

Will try the other setups when I get home from work later today
