The only thing you have to remember is that a fully optioned X5, (like the one I have now) with all the fancy suspension , bigger wheels etc takes alot of extra power. I have had 3.0d E53, 3.0d E70 and 35d E70 and the more options, the more power you need to run them and also the weight of the X5 increases as well.

My current 35d with all the options and big wheels only just has enough power now to handle the soft fluffy beach conditions when you have to drive up close to the dunes at high tide.

Yes I agree a 30d would be ok around town, but once you start towing a trailer and adding extra's you will need the bigger diesel engine.

30d, 35d and 40d are all the same size, ie. 3.0 litres.

I must admit I neve thought about the extra weight of options, but I suspect you could easily add 100 extra kegs or so with things like 7 seats, bigger wheels, sunroof, tow bar etc etc . . .

True, but power, torque and gearset are different.

2011 30d => 180kw 540nm, 8 gears
2010 35d => 200kw 565nm, 6 gears
2011 40d => 225kw 600nm, 8 gears

But they are the same capacity, not smaller/bigger as per the post I was commenting on. Also, the final version of the 35d was 210kW/580Nm. I think you will find that it was 200kW/565Nm as the 3.0sd but was upgraded around the time of the name change.

Correct, the problem lies in the fact that my X5 is probably 200kg heavier with all the extra gear and with more electrics, pumps & 20" wheels etc you push harder on the pedal to get it going, the result is worse fuel economy. Each one of my X5's has gotten worse economy than the last and the 40d with my options installed will be no different?

That's the price you pay for having all the 'fruit'!
As I mentioned previously, the fact that subsequent generations of X5s have better ADR fuel numbers is, in my opinion, more to do with the fact that BMW, like other manufacturers, is getting better at 'beating' the ADR test. It's a bit like car safety. Cars are getting better and better results in the NCAP (and ANCAP) tests but real-world data suggests that actual real-world crash worthiness it not improving as fast as the NCAP results.

Agreed, I think BMW should label there vehicles with correct fuel usuage per km. Not from some test bed. The M3 V8 vert I had was a gussler, not saying its not good car, it is but the Cali I got, gets better economy, handles better, faster and is nearly the same weight as the M3.

The Federal government dictates that the manufacturers publish results from the ADR test. They have no choice otherwise they can't sell their cars in Australia. The only exemption, I believe, may be low-volume cars.

Hi All,

will pick up my 3.0d LCI mid of next month, first time own a diesel engine.
May I know which diesel in Australia is the best for our X ? BP ultimate diesel ? Shell or Caltex vortex ? not able to find much information with google about the % content of bio fuel & sulphur.
