So basically those guys just got a cheap piece of glass and wedged it in there. How is this a better option than a screen protector? The glass is going to have glare problems for sure, it isn't all that well installed and when something hits it even moderately (they did after all break several during the relatively simple installation) you are going to have glass bits in your car and in the on board monitor housing!

The only single reason I can think of that glass would be preferable to a screen protector is that it is optically clearer, but only slightly so.

I found this link with info about the part numbers for the NAV:

BMW pre-installed system - TFT ? - MP3Car.com

According to that it is a Sharp LQ065T9BR52 or LQ065T9BR51. If anyone has a source, I would be game to try it. I assume it is just a ribbon connector to fit (fine pitch, but nothing crazy).

Here is a source for the screens:

Sell BMW E46 LCD LQ065T9BR54U (KECO Technology CO., LTD)

Well you are certainly complicating the matter!

The original poster of this thread said it was a:

LQ065T9BR53U (which according to papasmurf in post # 33 says it is not the correct one to use).

The link you provided above references:

LQ065T9BR52
LQ065T9BR51

And the link for the source for the screen shows:

LQ065T9BR54U

So that's 4 different part numbers. Why don't we try for 5?

seems like LQ065T9BR51 is the original part number and the latest revision is the ...54U version. they all have the same exact specs, but some searches talk about the "viewing angle" being different. many sites in other languages list any of those screens for the bmw e46,e39,e53 interchangeably...

you can get the spec sheet for the original one here that has all the detailed measurements: LQ065T9BR51 datasheet, LQ065T9BR51 datasheets, LQ065T9BR51 datenblatt, LQ065T9BR51 manual, LQ065T9BR51 data sheets, LQ065T9BR51 pdf - ALLDATASHEET.COM

Just realize that the viewing angle is KEY. You don't want to get the wrong one and have the wrong viewing angle. Also I'm not so sure about 54U being the latest revision. So far I've found these:

LQ065T9BR
-51M
-52
-51U
-52U
-53U (according to post # 33, this is not the correct one to use)
-54U
-55
-55U

If you are able to download that spec sheet, can you post is here? It's not working for me for some reason.

This direct link works for me:

LQ065T9BR51 pdf, LQ065T9BR51 description, LQ065T9BR51 datasheets, LQ065T9BR51 view ::: ALLDATASHEET :::

I will need to get the part number off an E39 installation. I know that some people say that the angle between the X5 and E39 differs enough to cause issues, but I have not verified it.

Got it to work. Yes to your other question, the X5 and E39 have different display angles.
