Everything went well, but a new wrinkle: After hooking everything back up new screen displays everything with no backlight, but I can go into settings and when I select brightness the backlight turns on and works fine/adjusts only to slowly dim back out after a few seconds.

Anyone experience this or have suggestions or could this be the dreaded inverter?
Disassembled and double-checked all connections. Think it's working now.

Thanks for the tips guys. I bought an LCD replacement from these guys as well. Really fast delivery (6 days) and good service!

I just created a new post here for this DIY video for replacing the LCD screen.

How do you guys order from Eurotech? And how much? They do not list prices. I can only fill in an enquiry form. Then nothing happens. Never got a reply for weeks.

I used the inquiry form. They replied in less than a day. Re-email them. Mine was less than $180 shipped or so.

Great video cncmastr, thanks! What I am not clear about is if this is going to fix the dark screen / failed back light / failed inverter. From what I can see the orange / black lead is the power for the florescent light which is powered by the inverter which from your video seems to be on the back of the board on the back of the screen. In other words if I buy a new screen I will still have the same issue (unless the issue is the bulb but most ppl are stating the issue is the inverter not the screen. Does anyone has any more details or thoughts on this (I see several ppl are asking similar questions on this thread). My car has DSP (as I believe everyone with Nav has) so the aftermarket radios don't seem to be a good option either and spending $3000 on a new nav system from BMW doesn't appear to me. Thanks in advance!

LCD's don't have bulbs.

I thought there was a florescent tube (ie bulb) in there that did the back light. Regardless, I have this issue with my systems where I can only read it under direct light and I would love to know if anyone knows now to fix it (as are other people on this thread).

I found this post by "M5 Jon" in another forum... I am going to give this a shot as the price is right and after speaking with him I had a good feeling he knew what the issue was and had done this many times before. It also worked out well for "M5 Jon" and other person from the thread that used him:

So the display on my nav went black a while back. Everything works, just the display is not lit up. Not wanting to drop $600 on a new nav display head unit I found an alternate solution. Jimmy Chen in New Jersey will do repairs for a fraction of the cost. Jimmy posts repair services as auctions on eBAY for BMW and Mercedes. I called Jimmy and talked w/him about the problem with my display. He said it could be repaired for $180 and to a mail a check for the amount and the unit to him.

Finding only limited posts/comments about him, and the fact that there is no physical business I was a bit suspicious. I searched a bit more and found some positive comments/threads on the web and decided to go for it. I mailed my display to Jimmy, and about a week half later (I am in California) I got it back.

His info:

I will report back after I fix my system...

partially repaired

I received the unit back and there are now 3 new issues:
1. The screen doesn’t auto-dim when the head lights are on.
2. The dimmer menu function has no impact (always max brightness).
3. The hex pattern on the screen.

Jimmy has agreed to take the unit back and will repair it. I will respond back after I receive it back again (hopefully it won't take 1 1/2 weeks again).

Pete

Update: I did receive the system back and Jimmy repaired it the 2nd time for free to my complete satisfaction. I don't think there is a cheaper and easier way to fix this.
