Most people do that but it's a bad idea because over time people add applications, have currupt file ect that are not compatible with a new OS.
He's my method for a brand new OS. Save your existing hard drive to an external bootable drive using carbon copy cloner. Make sure it boots. Dismount it. unplug it and everything else connected to your computer. Get all your third party Application disc's right next to your computer. Copy down all your passwords on a piece of paper. Have it there also. Make a copy of your ISP information. Get a beverage of your choice. Let's begin......... Do a clean install which erases your hard drive. Install Leopard, and configure your isp for internet service. Begin to install all you MAJOR software first. One by one check to see if each application works and upgrade each as you go over the internet. See where i'm going??? You guessed it. It will take a bit more time but no where near the time it will take to fix problems created by currupt and non functional applications. Have fun.................... Quote:

Thanks you guys for your help. I have a dual-core 2.0 GHz G5 processor so I guess I'm out of luck with the cool background effects... bummer, but it's ok for now since I never use iChat. Ok Quicksilver, I will follow your method soon, but right now I'm a little under the weather. Supergreg thanks for the specs.

zerochief, please know that I take absolutely no pleasure in your pain.
Having said that, I find the problems with the Mac OS very humorous!

Actually it's not really the OS the majority of the time. It's the apps that don't get along with the OS. Most of it is a quick fix if you keep up with app upgrades and delete apps from small companys that don't have the finances to keep up with development changes. Also installation per system is a factor to consider as well. Other folks don't follow instructions and Wham...... trouble.

To hear that there's problems, with website descriptions/recommendations is more than a little amusing to me. Most especially after all the Apple fans on this site tout it to everyone that asks what new computer they should get... It's cool though. Just nice to see a little crow on the other plates at the table!

Look, I'm not an Apple basher (except for their misguided previous policy of being the monopolistic producer of their boxes), I just find it funny that the system/OS that is supposed to be easy, reliable, virus-free, and user-friendly is causing problems when people try to upgrade to a new version OS. It's completely against the convential wisdom and Apple's marketing message (as well as the fanboy testaments). That's funny. I feel sorry for those users that are experiencing the pain associated with problematic installs, but the big picture is funny - perhaps ironic would be a better word? Didn't mean to start a fight by pointing out the obvious. I'll not comment on Apple products again (unless I love it, of course).
