I haven't heard of the powersteering making farting sounds, but I have definitely heard it being described as something similar to mating whales.

If you make the sound happen, open the lid to the of the ps res and check to see if the fluid is frothy.

DIY is fun! FYI- Brake pad sensors should be replaced with new pads.

I did actually replace the sensor but the old one was almost cemented in so I broke the top of it while doing the replacement. But thanks anyway!

I had the same thing - front sensor was locked it so hard it shattered before I could pull it out. The rear just popped out no problem. Used a new front sensor (was planning to replace it anyway) and rear was only removed to check it. Good thing it came out OK! ;)

Been a while since last posting - not too many original parts left on my 2001 X5 - Last 6 months have seen complete new brakes w/drilled & slotted discs, new tranny, replaced 2 front struts & multiple front end steering parts due to an accident, replaced cable to position steering wheel up/down. front passenger window regulator, and had the transfer case replaced a couple years ago. - The last 6 months I had over $20k of repairs or replacement, not counting a month's stay in West St Louis (+ rental car) while some mechanical repairs were done so I could get back to Idaho.

Stupid? Crazy? Foolish? Yeah, all those things. But at 67, I'm not looking for a new car. My sisters keep asking me to get one. I reply, "I am..., piece by piece."

It took me over a year to find an X5 Sport, 4.4, with NO sunroof in 2004/2005. Easy you say? Now eliminate all white, black, and gray cars. Rare as hen's teeth. As you can tell from below, it has had serious upgrades. including SiriusXM.

It's comfortable, fun to drive, and is responsive as an M-car (which I cannot fit into) Guess I'm one of those Mark Twain referred to when he sad, "Nobody likes change but a baby."

Am on my way back east this Sunday (30 April) Nashville, Raleigh, Charleston(SC). Happy Trails!

Are you really tall and that's why you wanted No sunroof ?
After sitting in an X5 without a sunroof, I wish I didn't have one, as I'd prefer the extra headroom.
Any reason you didn't want a 2006 year?

I've see 4 coil failures over the last year, replaced one with new, other 3 with old set of 8 coils I got off E-bay for $60.

Done playing with it.....

I had those on my e39 and I swear by the butt dyno they worked great.

I narrowed down the list of reasons my 4.8 might be farting. It has a low, long groan/fart noise when turning, but only in the morning. Does it all through my 45 minute AM routine then behaves perfectly when I leave work.

i ruled out suspension (just about totally rebuilt anyway), wheels (same), and motor mounts before going to the Indy. They confirmed the above and eventually landed on a worn power steering pump. Haven't done any work yet and they seem a bit unsure so don't want to throw money at noises just yet.

What's the temp ambient? When cold my wife's power steering sounds exactly like "whales humping" until friction warms up the fluid. It was a little low and topping off made it better.

A put put put sound sounds like a sticking ball joint. You said most were replaced. Take an audio recording and share (video will include sound). If a joint not usually too difficult to find. Have somebody turn the wheel to reproduce the sound and put your hand on the various joints. A stick-slip joint will have a distinct vibration.

What do those go for?

Not on the e53 but did bilstein HD front struts on my late model 325i e30 vert along with e90 drop hats for a very mild drop in the front. Tomorrow am doing brake lines (they were crumbling upon moving caliper after removing from strut assembly) and when my FCP order gets here it will get new inner/outer tie rods and meyle CAB's.

Last weekend did timing belt/tensioner, water pump, drive belts, and sway bar end links.

Had already done struts on it but the Monroe ones sucked... I hated the ride quality. Pulled them out with less than 1000 miles on them.

This weekend the E53 is getting some love though... I have an Ascendant Audio Havoc 12" sub going in now that the wife's diesel e70 is taking up baby and hauling duties. I will soon have a BSW setup for sale... I think anyway.

Sorry, couldn't resist. :D But they are pretty expensive. They don't give application specific pricing anymore in the Bav Auto catalog, but they are pricey.

Edit: They are $346.80 for a set of 8. Ouch. HAH, and they are actually $1.90 MORE expensive if you buy the set of 8 SKU. If you buy 8 individually they are cheaper. :dunno:
