2001 4.4i
109k

Here we go, things I've done:
-Water Pump
-Thermostat
-3 Expansion Tanks (coolant)
-The PITA line that runs to the expansion tank (twice)
-Both rear air shocks, one fuse for the compressor
-Alot of vacuum hoses
-Two PCV hoses on the back of the motor (they were mush)
-Spark plugs
-Valve cover gaskets
-Alternator
-Belts and Hoses
-$1.87 plastic clip on the driver's window regulator (I think the pass side just went, not to worry, I bought 4 clips )
-Driver Rear door handle
-All 4 brakes and rotors, about 20k ago

Things the dealer did under warranty:
-New radio (twice)
-New main display (started dropping pixels like crazy, odometer was getting hard to read)
-A seal (I cannot recall which)

This weekend:
-New PS Pump (if someone would answer my question from this am please!? TIA)
-New PS hoses, resevior
-Check control arms, bushings

Saving up for:
-A better mechanic than me to do the PCV system and valley pan gasket...quoted $1500

I will never touch:
The transmission...109k and never been touched

Just picked up a '02 4.6 one week ago today. Has 133k on it. Was an impulse buy, but looks to be very well taken care of inside and out. Have only driven it the 20 miles home to my garage that night. Got it up to about 130 mph on the interstate, drive the heck of it on the back roads to my house, and it seemed very tight and solid. Has not moved since, lol!

I'm replacing all the fluids (engine, transmission, diffs, coolant) and filters (engine oil, engine air, cabin, transmission), and cylinder head gaskets (evidence of oil leaks) and plugs.

So far from tearing it down, the only thing I have noticed is that one coil has been replaced, but all 8 are bone dry (no oil on them). Everything else appears original. Some pixels are dead in the DSP head unit, but I'm replacing that anyway with aftermarket.

No service records, met the seller in a high school parking lot and did a cash transaction. Almost got him down to 4 figures. It seems some of you guys have spent that on maintenance in a single year! Wish me luck! I'll probably need it!

Recent work within the last year:

- Water pump, all hoses, and alternator ( preventative maintenance )
- Driver side door handle carrier.
- New radiator.
- Front Driver side CV axle, and oil seal.
- Sway bar link.
- 2 window regulators.
- ABS moduel.

Original engin and Trans. at 15,000 mile oil changes I am only down 1/2 qrt of oil. Runs like a charm. Everything that I replaced where the original parts.

Wow, that is great mileage. Have you ever changed the transmission oil? This gives us V8 owners hope!

Nice ride!

Just bought my wife a 2004 4.4 X5 with 98k to replace her aging grand cherokee. I really hope I made an ok choice. I like the vehicle although I feel Audi still builds nicer cars. But since I've owned it the last few months I replaced ride hieight sensor and now have an intermittent starting issue. Also I'm changing the waterpump and accessories since it looks like it is original. I use the recommended castrol oil but I will and have always changed my oil at 3,000 mile intervals even with synthetic. I just don't know how the vehicle was taken care of before. Always a scary thing.

Good luck. Mine is a love hate relationship :D
You will be just fine going 10,000 miles between oil changes. Mine has over 110k and I change between 10-12k and engine is pristine.

2004 X5 3.0 6MT with 120K. Owned since 40-something K

Have done: (S - Shop, P - Personally)
S - Both front axles
S - One rear wheel bearing
S - Valve cover gasket (probably failed due to bad thermostat / CCV)
P - Coils / plugs (Bavauto)
P - DISA repair with G.A.S kit
P - New Sachs struts all around (Bavauto)
P - Thermostat
P - Cold weather CCV kit from (ECS)
P - Front / rear brakes
P - Oil changes @ ~10K (mix of Mobil 1, Lubro Moly, Castrol Syntec)
P - Gear box oil changed to Royal Purple
P - Windshield washer pumps & grommets (still have a leak somewhere)
P - Installed modified Clutch Delay Valve (CDV) for us MT folks
P - Aux input installed

Under the remainder of warranty, did have major work done on the pano sunroof before 50K. Think I got new tracks and drains on that deal.

After doing the DISA, CCV and replacing a bad coil last weekend, the thing runs better than ever. Going for 200K at this point. I'm due for front brakes and an alignment.

I joke to myself - If you like wrenching, this is the car for you.

Its not fast, but it is solid and fun to drive.

Audi's are VW's with fancy pants on. I don't get it...VW's are nice enough cars.

You better start a savings account for maintenance...and be prepared to get your hands dirty. On the plus side, owning a 2001 4.4i has made me a much better and more confident mechanic
